Pride organisers continue to appeal for support to save parade

A pride event is continuing to ask for support as its parade is at risk of being cancelled. Worthing Pride announced last week that its parade was at 'serious risk of being cancelled' due to a lack of sponsorship. Organisers of the event said more than 35 businesses and 500 people were involved in the parade last year and as of April 25, only six businesses had applied. Posts on the event's social media page previously called for support from Worthing West MP Beccy Cooper and Worthing Business Improvement District (Bid). Pride director Gary Richardson said people are now beginning to engage although donations to the Go Fund Me as well as event sponsorship packages are still needed. Tickets can be purchased on the Worthing Pride website. Mr Richardson also asked that 'members of the business community that benefit from the increased footfall to the town over pride weekend' make a 'donation of profits' to the event's Go Fund Me. He added that a percentage of ticket sales from 'pride events' could be donated towards funds. Headliners for the festival include Jo O'Meara from S Club and Natasha Hamilton from Atomic Kitten fame. Drag performers include Elektra Fence from RuPaul's Drag Race UK. Ms Cooper said: 'Pride is an extremely important event for our town and one which I have always enjoyed taking part in. 'As with all partnership requests, we assess these on a case-by-case basis in line with our diversity and inclusion policy and organisation objectives. 'While recent communication has been challenging, we remain open to constructive dialogue and have invited the organisers to meet with us, as yet, this has not been accepted. 'That invitation still stands.'

Council says "unsafe" Grade-II listed building has been made secure

A Grade II-listed building which was shut off after big cracks appeared has been made safe. On March 21, Uckfield High Street was partially closed following concerns regarding the safety of the former Maidens Head Hotel building. Multiple vertical cracks had appeared on the building, sparking fears that the building was "unsafe". In an update, Wealden Council confirmed that they have secured the building and mitigated any immediate risks to the public. 'The council remains committed to monitoring the situation and making sure that the safety of residents is the main focus." Wealden District Council said it was alerted to the condition of a property's front wall by a resident in February. After an assessment by qualified building inspectors, it was decided a temporary support would be needed. The partially closed Uckfield High Street (Image: Sussex News and Pictures) A spokesperson for the council said: 'Site visits by a qualified building inspector have been taking place since February 4 to assess and monitor the situation. Our primary concern throughout is public safety. 'After exhaustive but unsuccessful attempts to contact the owner, it was decided to use our emergency powers under section 78 of the building Act 1984 to take such action as necessary and reasonable to remove this potential danger.' A temporary highway closure was put in place to provide protection to the public while the situation was further reviewed. Local businesses were able to stay open during the works and access for pedestrians was provided on the opposite pavement. The council said the temporary support will remove any danger to the public however further actions will be needed to provide a permanent solution.
