Sonora PD shares details on murder suspect manhunt
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Sonora Police Department has released information regarding the incident that sparked a multi-agency manhunt for an 'armed and extremely dangerous' murder suspect on May 28 following the subject's capture. In an alert issued on the morning of May 28, the City of Sonora stated that Austin John Rodriguez, 30, was wanted by the Sonora Police Department, Sutton County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers for murder. The City advised that he was 'armed and extremely dangerous' and encouraged citizens to contact local law enforcement should he be seen or information about his whereabouts be gathered. The City then reported at 4:30 p.m. that same day that Rodriguez had been captured and taken into police custody 'after an intensive search and great team effort.' RELATED: Sonora murder suspect captured on Wednesday afternoon Sonora PD stated that officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Glasscock Avenue at approximately 8:58 p.m. on the evening of May 27 in response to 'a 911 call reporting a shooting.' Upon arriving at the scene, an individual identified as Cynthia Luna was discovered to have 'sustained multiple gunshot wounds.' The department said that Rodriguez had 'fled the scene immediately following the shooting.' Sonora PD said a 'coordinated manhunt was launched with the assistance of the Sutton County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety.' The investigation into the incident was then transferred to the Texas Rangers after the crime scene was secured. Luna was transported to an area hospital 'for emergency treatment,' as per the department. She was transferred to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo after being stabilized. Sonora PD said that, 'despite the efforts of medical personnel,' Luna died due to her injuries 'in the early morning hours' of May 28. The department stated that 'the search for Rodriguez intensified with the involvement of multiple agencies.' The hunt for Rodriguez ultimately concluded at 4:02 p.m. on May 28 after he 'was taken into custody without incident on West 2nd Street in Sonora.' Sonora PD thanked first responders and law enforcement for their coordination and assistance 'during this critical operation.' 'The Sonora Police Department extends its gratitude to these agencies for their assistance, their tremendous courage, and their quick response, as well as to the Sutton County Volunteer Fire Department, Lillian Memorial Hudspeth Hospital Staff, Sutton County EMS and Texas Department of Transportation for their support during this critical operation,' Sonora PD said. A GoFundMe online fundraiser was created on May 28 to pay for Luna's funeral and memorial expenses and support her children. The fundraiser webpage states that Luna was the mother of six. 'Any contribution, big or small, would be deeply appreciated as we honor Cynthia's life and say our goodbyes,' the fundraiser webpage reads. Armed man arrested near Sonora after chase, shots fired
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The City of Sonora has announced that a man is now in custody after reporting that shots had been fired by law enforcement, a chase had occurred and the involved suspect was armed and at large. The City issued a Nixle alert at 3:36 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, stating that shots had been fired by Kimble County law enforcement and that officers had 'initiated a pursuit from Kimble County.' The chase was said to have ended 'at 412 exit on Interstate 10.' The suspect, which the City identified as 25-year-old Rashaud Breland Al Moncrief, was stated to be 'at large and armed.' The City asked residents to contact the Sutton County Sheriff's Office to report suspicious activity and to call 911 in case of an emergency. 4 juveniles apprehended after stolen vehicle almost rolls into river In an update released via another Nixle alert issued at 9:14 a.m., the City stated that Moncrief was apprehended by two Sutton County Sheriff's Office deputies 'without further incident' after 'a brief foot pursuit' that occurred 'near the 412 exit ramp on Interstate 10.' Moncrief was then turned over to the Kimble County Sheriff's Office. 'Chief Fernandez would like to give special recognition to the two deputies from the Sutton County Sheriff's Office who remained vigilant in their efforts to locate the suspect,' the City stated in the alert. 'Their persistence led to a brief foot pursuit, during which they successfully apprehended the individual. Their commitment to duty and teamwork were instrumental in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.' The City said Sonora Police Department Chief Donald Fernandez also extends thanks to 'Sutton County Sheriff's Office, the Sonora Police Department, the Kimble County Sheriff's Office, the Junction Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their coordinated response and dedication during this high-profile incident.' 'This event serves as a strong reminder of the importance of collaboration and teamwork among law enforcement agencies,' the City said in the alert. 'Despite the potentially dangerous nature of the situation, the coordinated efforts of all involved ensured that no one was injured, and the suspect was taken into custody safely.'
