MLA Suvarna opposes hike in power bill
Udupi: The state govt decided to increase the electricity bill by 36 paise per unit to fund the pensions of energy department employees, which is opposed by Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna. The govt is collecting this additional charge from consumers to cover the pensions and gratuities of various ESCOM and KPTCL staff, leading to consumer outrage. In the May bill, consumers are being charged an extra 36 paise per unit, amounting to hundreds of rupees more per month. This move to recover approximately Rs 2,800 crore annually from electricity users, which was previously funded by the govt, is seen as an additional burden on consumers. This decision exacerbates the difficulties faced by people already struggling with increased electricity rates, stated MLA Suvarna, who wrote to energy minister KJ George. In his letter, the MLA urged the govt to retract this order and continue funding the pensions and gratuities from the govt budget, instead of imposing the cost on consumers. Dengue dangerous but preventable disease: DC
Mandya: In a strong call to action, deputy commissioner Kumara on Friday emphasised the importance of preventive measures in the fight against dengue fever, describing it as a dangerous yet preventable disease that requires collective awareness and community involvement. Speaking at the inauguration of a dengue awareness rally at Sanjay Circle, the DC stressed that "awareness is the first and most effective medicine against dengue." He highlighted that the key to prevention lies in individual and community efforts. "It is our collective responsibility to ensure a clean environment . Dengue can be prevented if we all work together to eliminate mosquito-breeding grounds ," he stated. With the arrival of the monsoon season, the risk of dengue transmission increases due to water stagnation in drains, containers, and construction sites. Kumara urged citizens to regularly clean these areas to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes. Dr K Mohan, district health and family welfare officer, emphasised this year's campaign theme: "Inspect, Clean, Cover." He advised residents to identify potential mosquito-breeding sites, clean them thoroughly, and ensure that water storage containers are properly covered. To observe National Dengue Fever Awareness Day , a human chain was formed at Sanjay Circle, with participation from students from various colleges. 'Keep your surroundings clean' District surveillance officer Dr Suvarna on Friday emphasised the need for public and all elected representatives' cooperation in preventing dengue and similar epidemic diseases. She spoke during the inauguration of National Dengue Prevention Day held in Mysuru. Dr Suvarna highlighted that dengue can be prevented by people keeping their surroundings clean and not allowing mosquitoes to breed. She said that the health department took various measures to prevent dengue and raise awareness among people. The health department directed all primary health centres to conduct larvae surveys in their areas every Friday. Former corporator Rajani Annaiah, state-level entomologist Usha, district RCH Siraj Ahammed, and others were present.

15 dengue cases reported in Mysuru this year
Suvarna, District Officer for Vector-Borne Disease Control, said on Friday that it is essential to keep our surroundings clean and ensure that water does not stagnate in order to prevent the breeding of dengue-causing mosquitoes. Speaking at the National Dengue Day event organised at a Primary Health Center in the city, Dr. Suvarna said cooperation from public representatives is crucial in this effort. This year's theme is 'Check, Clean, and Cover: Steps to Defeat Dengue.' According to data released by the Health Department, Mysuru district has reported 15 cases of dengue and 38 cases of chikungunya since the beginning of 2025. While the numbers remain relatively low so far, health officials have cautioned that these cases typically rise with the onset of the monsoon. A look at recent trends shows a concerning pattern, particularly in dengue cases. In 2024, the district reported 946 dengue cases, the highest in three years, and 186 chikungunya cases. Notably, one dengue-related death was recorded last year — the first such fatality in the district in recent years. In 2023, Mysuru saw 789 dengue and 103 chikungunya cases, while in 2022, there were 702 dengue and 219 chikungunya cases. 'It is important to raise awareness about dengue among the public. In this regard, the support of elected representatives, along with the Health Department, plays a significant role,' Dr. Suvarna said. To control dengue, she said, larval surveys are conducted every Friday at all primary health centers. By destroying mosquito larvae, the mosquito population can be reduced, thereby lowering the risk of dengue, she added. People having symptoms like fever should immediately visit the nearest hospital for treatment, she said. Former city corporation members Rajini Annayya and Chayadevi, State-level entomologist Usha, district RCH officer Siraj Mohammad, taluk health officer Puttathayamma, medical officer Naveen, health education officers Muneendramma and Padmavathi, along with other district officials, supervisors, ASHA workers, and PHCO staff from various primary health centers, were present.
