Eid habtas boost trade and traditions of Oman

Muscat – Eid al Adha habtas (traditional markets) have opened across several governorates in Oman, with a surge in commercial activity and public participation. These markets, held in the days leading up to the festival, are showcasing the country's deep-rooted cultural, social and commercial practices. In North Sharqiyah, villages are witnessing brisk trade, especially in Ibra, where evening habta gatherings are drawing large crowds. Open markets and consumer tents have become popular venues, creating a festive atmosphere while contributing to local trade. 'Markets in Sinaw are seeing exceptional commercial activity with the launch of the Eid al Adha habta. There's a strong turnout of shoppers and all necessities are readily available, especially in the livestock market, which is buzzing with activity ahead of the festival,' said Salem al Siyabi from the wilayat of Sinaw. For livestock breeders, the season presents a prime opportunity. Ahmed al Balushi from Suwaiq noted that the demands for sheep, cows and camels are high. 'The habta season presents a lucrative opportunity for breeders to sell their livestock through 'Al Munadah', a traditional bidding process that adds excitement to the sales.' Children are also having a noticeable presence at these markets, dressed in traditional Omani attire and enjoying toys, sweets and nuts. 'The habta truly captures the essence of our customs and traditions passed down through generations,' Balushi added. In North Batinah, merchant Abdullah al Wahaibi highlighted that the seventh day of Dhu al Hijjah typically marks the peak of the habta, as residents purchase Eid essentials such as Omani daggers, men's canes and traditional jewellery. 'These events help showcase local products, support small businesses and promote cultural continuity,' he said. In South Batinah, Nakhal Municipality has ramped up activities in villages and tourist areas ahead of Eid. Meanwhile, in Dakhliyah, preparations are under way with a focus on public hygiene, organising habta markets and livestock souqs, and holding traditional events across the governorate. Municipalities across the country are also prioritising health and safety, preparing slaughterhouses and conducting food safety inspections. Food and Health Control and Licensing departments are ensuring that hygiene standards are met in establishments handling food. To support small businesses and entrepreneurs, the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development is holding Eid bazaars and product exhibitions in various governorates, promoting local crafts and productive families during the festive season.

Pakistan Schools Oman: A testament to enduring friendship between the Sultanate and Pakistan

Muscat: Pakistan Schools Oman stand as a testament to the enduring friendship between Oman and Pakistan. The journey began with the generous support of the Government of Oman, which provided land for the school—an invaluable contribution that laid the foundation for an educational system deeply rooted in both Pakistani and Omani cultures. As Pakistan School Muscat marks its 50th anniversary this year, it is a moment of reflection on its remarkable achievements and transformative developments over the past five decades. Today, Pakistan Schools in Oman operate across seven branches, with Muscat and Seeb being the largest, and Salalah offering an international stream alongside the Pakistani curriculum. Sohar is set for significant expansion, while Seeb and Nizwa are preparing to extend their academic reach in the upcoming session. Suwaiq and Buraimi continue to strengthen their impact within their respective communities. The network of Pakistan Schools in Oman is not just an educational initiative but a symbol of the strategic and brotherly alliance between the two nations. A key milestone in our journey is the development of a new campus in Seeb, made possible by the generous support of the Omani government, which granted two acres of land for this purpose. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Housing for facilitating this allotment and to the Ministry of Education for their unwavering support and supervision throughout this process. The Ministry of Education's continuous guidance has been instrumental in our progress, including regular visits to analyze and enhance our educational standards. Their recent delegation on February 19, 2025, underscores their commitment to our institution's growth. We also extend our gratitude to the former Ambassador of Pakistan, Imran Ali Chaudhry, for his instrumental role in securing this land. Additionally, the new campus of Pakistan School Muscat is also in the pipeline, with construction set to commence soon. The expansion of the Buraimi and Salalah branches is another step toward accommodating the growing student body. Like many institutions worldwide, Pakistan schools faced immense challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, enduring substantial financial and academic setbacks. However, rather than faltering, the school emerged stronger, embarking on an ambitious journey of revival and progress. Since 2021, a series of bold initiatives have propelled the schools sytem to new heights, ensuring that it stands on par with the best international schools in Oman. A major turning point in this transformation was aligning with Oman's Vision 2040. External academic and financial audits were conducted post-pandemic to assess the institution's needs. Based on the findings, swift measures were implemented to bridge gaps, ensuring infrastructure improvements, enhanced hygiene standards, and access to clean drinking water. Smart boards were installed in all classrooms across all branches, and laboratories and libraries were upgraded, creating a modern and dynamic learning environment. Beyond infrastructure, academic excellence became a primary focus. Alongside the existing Pakistani stream, the Cambridge curriculum was introduced to broaden educational choices. Digital transformation was prioritised, making PSM a fully digitised institution for data management and academic operations. In a groundbreaking move, PSM became the first proud partner of UNESCO in Oman, championing equitable education as it caters to students from over 19 nationalities. To further integrate global educational trends, the Department of Research and Development was established in 2024. This department is dedicated to embedding Oman's Vision 2040 into the academic framework while incorporating the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 21st-century skills. The curriculum now fosters critical thinking, digital literacy, and student well-being, ensuring that PSM graduates are well-equipped for the future. Additionally, the R&D department oversees external and in-house teacher training programs to continuously enhance the quality of education. Recognising the importance of sustainability, Pakistan Schools Oman have transitioned towards a paper-free environment through project-based learning. Additionally, e-classes for Grade 8 and S1 will be launched from the next academic session, along with the introduction of the BTEC Level 3 Business Extended Diploma, further strengthening the school's digital integration. Community outreach remains a priority, with Pakistan Schools Oman forging collaborations with universities and colleges to enhance opportunities for higher education and professional development. Strengthening this commitment, financial audits were conducted in 2022—after being pending since 2016—confirming that the schools are now in surplus profit after decades of financial challenges. This fiscal stability allows for continued advancements in infrastructure and academics. Parental and community engagement has also been reinforced. A Parent Council has been established to serve as the school's ambassadors, strengthening the partnership between the institution and families. Additionally, student voice and choice are prioritized, ensuring that their aspirations align with the school's vision and mission. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the current Ambassador of Pakistan, Dr. Naveed Safdar Bokhari, whose unwavering support continues to uphold the legacy of Pakistan Schools Oman. With a steadily increasing number of students, PSM's rising academic standards are evident, reinforcing its reputation as a leading educational institution in Oman. Pakistan Schools Oman have sustained their legacy and redefined excellence in education. As the system embarks on the next phase of its journey, it stands as a beacon of progress, inclusivity, and innovation, ready to shape the leaders of tomorrow. The next 50 years promise even more incredible advancements, reinforcing PSM's commitment to academic brilliance and global competitiveness. The schools will continue to lead by its mission and vision, cultivating a community of lifelong learners who value respect, equality, and dignity while embracing the diverse perspectives that strengthen us. Our vision aligns with the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who emphasises the pivotal role of education, research and knowledge centres as the foundation of economic development. Pakistan schools in Oman are honoured to contribute to this national goal by developing future-ready individuals equipped with the skills and values to navigate and shape an interconnected world. Ameer Hamza is the Chairman, Board of Directors of Pakistan Schools Oman
