Sven Sprangler reveals new culture he wants to help establish at St Johnstone after signing new deal

St Johnstone midfielder, Sven Sprangler, has pledged to play his part in establishing a 'winning culture' at McDiarmid Park. The 30-year-old has signed a two-year contract to stay in Perth. Sixteen players were released at the end of a relegation season but head coach, Simo Valakari, wanted to keep Sprangler at the club and the Austrian is hoping to see new habits form for the Saints squad in the near future. 'I am absolutely delighted to be staying here for the next two seasons,' said Sprangler. 'Perth is like home for me. 'I am grateful to the gaffer and the club for this opportunity. Like every game, I will give everything for this club. 'I am looking forward to the new season and hopefully it is a successful campaign for us.' He added: 'For me, the new season starts now. I am ready to get to work and can't wait to get started. 'It is a new challenge for us. We need to try and create a winning culture.' Sprangler was signed by Steven MacLean two years ago. He was a free agent picked up after the summer transfer window shut and went straight into the starting line-up for a debut away to Hibs. MacLean was sacked not long after that game. Then, having forced his way into Craig Levein's plans, Sprangler suffered a season-ending knee injury at Celtic Park in mid-March. He drifted out of the first team picture at the start of the 2024/25 campaign before becoming a regular under Valakari. Sprangler's form dropped off towards the end of last season once he became a utility player, filling in at the back, but he also had a sustained spell of impressive displays over the winter months. Courier Sport understands Saints are hopeful that Drey Wright will follow his lead and sign a new contract.

Sven Sprangler: We have let the St Johnstone fans down and the first thing we can do is beat Dundee

Sven Sprangler feels the weight of letting the St Johnstone supporters down. Being part of a team which puts that right by turning relegation from the Premiership into a swift return is the only way to shed that responsibility. But beating local rivals, Dundee, in their mast match as a top-flight club would be a small step in the right direction. 'I haven't slept a lot for the last few nights,' said Sprangler, who wore the captain's armband as the final whistle blew following Wednesday night's defeat to Hearts. 'It's sad. I've cried a little bit as well. 'I still believed until the Hearts game that it could be done but the table doesn't lie. 'The bottom line is we got relegated. 'I am sad for the club and the fans and the city because they gave everything. 'And we didn't give everything back. 'I am devastated by that. It's my first relegation. 'It really hurts because this club is, for me, like family. 'We have let them down.' The Austrian added: 'It's a huge game on Sunday to play against Dundee on the last day – not just for us players but for the club. 'The new season is not starting in June or July. It is starting right now. 'I know the guys who will play will give everything for the club and do everything for the win to give the fans something small back. 'Everyone had to do better over the season. But you can't turn the time back. 'You have to look to the future. 'The first thing we can do is win this game.' Sprangler will soon be out of contract and, like the rest of the Saints players, will learn Simo Valakari's plans for next season on Monday morning. 'This club is like family for me,' he said. 'I have never felt this way about another club. 'It's because of the people. 'And there is so much potential here. 'At the moment, I have no clue about the future. 'If I am playing, I will give everything, like I do in every game. 'After that, we can speak about what is going on.' Whether or not he is still a Saints player for the Championship promotion campaign, Sprangler is convinced Valakari is the man to bring the McDiarmid Park club back up in one go. 'The gaffer is a good coach,' he said. 'I saw this since day one. 'He fits very well to the club and deserves to be here. 'He is still so enthusiastic and has so much hunger to get back. 'Now we have to bring this club a winning mentality. 'The manager is the best man to do that – 100%. 'Everyone has to do everything to come back to the Premiership.'

Sven Sprangler contemplates biggest game with St Johnstone

Sven Sprangler is well aware of the enormity of the task facing St Johnstone. And he is well aware of the enormity of the stakes when Ross County visit McDiarmid Park next weekend. Bottom v second bottom is a win or bust fixture for the Perth side, who are six points adrift with just nine points left to play for. The Saints captain is confident his team can summon up a performance fitting of the occasion, despite the fact that they fell to another crushing defeat against Kilmarnock on Saturday. 'We are really disappointed,' he said. 'It's tough, but what can we do? 'We have to keep pushing until the end of the line. 'It's still positive that there are still opportunities for us. From these three games, we have to win every single one. 'When you lose a game it is always frustrating, but it feels it is even more frustrating in this situation we are in. 'We lost, we recover, we go again and there is no other choice. There are only small margins. 'We know what we have to do – win all our three games.' Sprangler, in his second season with Saints, added: 'This could be the biggest game I've played since coming to Scotland. 'But, at the end of the day, it's just a football game. 'The pressure is from the outside. We know what we need to do. 'We will prepare well and do everything to get the win.' Sprangler was deployed at right-back at the weekend, the third starting position he has filled this season. 'I am grateful for the opportunity to play,' said the Austrian. 'I am doing everything for the team. 'It's a huge trust from the gaffer that he plays me in different positions. 'I want to give him everything back and also do it for the club. 'It is what it is. I don't mind it as long as I can help the team.'
