Dearborn desserts: Mochi Dough is a rice flour paradise
👋 Annalise here. My latest Dearborn sweet treat stop was Mochi Dough, the place to be if you want to try a donut with a completely different texture.
The big picture: I've highlighted some of the many bright spots in Dearborn's deep and diverse dessert industry: Palestinian sweets during Ramadan, Dubai chocolate cups and decadent bubble waffles.
The plan is to wrap up this series with a look at the chefs, business owners and others who make the scene come alive.
State of play: Mochi Dough, on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, sells Japanese-inspired flower-shaped donuts made mostly with rice flour, plus a wide selection of boba drinks. It's a franchise with most of its locations in California.
Flavors rotate, and when I visited, they included an Eid celebration chocolate donut, strawberry, cookies and cream, banana cream and taro.
The vibe: Mochi Dough is highly Instagrammable, with rope swings hanging from a ceiling that's covered in a layer of pink flowers.
Like Sweet Stacks, where I got bubble waffles, patrons order on touch-screen kiosks.
What I got: Three mochi donuts ($7.50) and a matcha latte with boba ($7.60).
