Syahredzan, Young Syefura and the burden of race
COMMENT | I read that DAP MPs Syahredzan Johan and Young Syefura Othman are dragging this Bersatu hack to court for essentially labelling them 'race traitors'. To be clear, I hope that they pursue this course of action to the very end. However, the question is how can one be a race traitor in this country? All the legacy parties (which include the DAP) are race-based, even though their supporters make these elaborate claims otherwise. MCA and DAP have each accused the other of betraying the Chinese community. The MIC did betray the Indian community and now has to...

Accused of being ‘traitors to the race', Syahredzan and Rara ready to sue PN assemblyman
PETALING JAYA: DAP National Vice Chairman Syahredzan Johan and DAP National Assistant Publicity Secretary Young Syefura Othman will take legal action over a Facebook post uploaded by Kuala Sentul assemblyman, Datuk Jasri Jamaludin, on Tuesday. Both Syahredzan and Syefura, who are also Bangi and Bentong MPs respectively, expressed disappointment over the assemblyman's actions. 'Yesterday (Tuesday, (April 30), the Perikatan Nasional assemblyman uploaded a post on his Facebook page containing defamatory remarks about us. 'Among other things, he accused us of being 'traitors to the race' and included other defamatory comments. 'We take this matter seriously, as we have been constantly slandered by PN supporters online. We did not expect this kind of behaviour to be mirrored by their leaders as well, like this assemblyman,' they stated in a Facebook post on Wednesday (April 30). They also expressed disappointment that a Muslim elected representative from Pahang would resort to such defamation right after the month of Syawal. 'We will be seeking legal advice and will initiate legal proceedings against him. 'We also urge all PN leaders and elected representatives to be more mindful of their words.'

Negative views of Malays in DAP won't affect chances in Ayer Kuning, says Syahredzan
DAP national vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan said the party remains committed to supporting Barisan Nasional candidate Yusri Bakir in Ayer Kuning. PETALING JAYA : Negative perceptions of Malay leaders in DAP will not affect the unity government's chances of winning over voters in the Ayer Kuning by-election, says DAP national vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan. Bernama reported him as saying such perceptions stem from a lack of exposure and direct interaction with the local community, especially in rural areas. 'This is a question I'm often asked. I believe much of it arises from situations where people do not personally know the Malay leaders in DAP. 'As the saying goes, you can't love what you don't know. 'At the same time, Perak has DAP state vice-chairman Abdul Aziz Bari, so I think DAP is not unfamiliar to the people of Perak,' he told reporters in Tapah today. Together with him on the campaign trail for Ayer Kuning today was DAP assistant national publicity secretary Young Syefura Othman. Syahredzan said DAP remains committed to supporting Barisan Nasional candidate Yusri Bakir, with the campaign's focus on ensuring continuity of service and safeguarding development and welfare in Ayer Kuning. He said DAP had been assigned to assist in 15 polling districts, with the main priority being efforts to increase voter turnout. The Ayer Kuning by-election will see a three-cornered fight between Yusri, Perikatan Nasional candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. The Election Commission has set polling for April 26, with early voting on April 22.

Stop questioning our stand on constitutional fundamentals, says DAP
DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan (left) was responding to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki saying DAP would be unable to amend the relevant constitutional provisions even if it had a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat. PETALING JAYA : DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan has urged all parties to stop questioning his party's stand on fundamental constitutional provisions, particularly on Islam as the federation's religion and the special position of the Bumiputeras. Responding to a statement made by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Syahredzan maintained that DAP had always upheld, respected and defended these fundamental provisions in the Federal Constitution. He said this included the Malay language as the national language, the nation's system of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, and the rights of other races and communities in the country. 'This stand has been reiterated many times by our party leaders, and also by delegates at our congresses. It was repeated again at our 18th national congress in March. 'DAP has no intention or agenda to amend or change these fundamental matters in the Federal Constitution. This guarantee has been repeatedly stated. 'I urge all parties, whether friend or foe, to stop questioning DAP's stand on these fundamental matters under the Federal Constitution,' Syahredzan said in a statement. The Bangi MP said DAP's struggle was for a Malaysian Malaysia, adding that this was in line with the constitution. Earlier, Asyraf sought to assure that the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras were safeguarded under the unity government, saying DAP would be unable to amend the relevant constitutional provisions even if it had a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat. This is because amending these Articles would require the consent of the Conference of Rulers, he said.
