McLaughlin-Levrone impresses in 100m debut in Philadelphia

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone stepped outside her usual 400 metres event, recording an impressive 11.21 seconds to finish second in her first professional 100 metres flat race at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia on Sunday. The American four-time Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400 metres hurdles, known for her dominance in the one-lap event, was beaten by Jamaica's Ackera Nugent, who won in 11.11 seconds. Nugent's victory completed a weekend double, securing the women's short hurdles group with a perfect 24 points following her win in Saturday's 100 metres hurdles. American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden scorched the track with a blistering time of 10.73 seconds in the 100 metres, clinching victory in the short sprints group with 24 points after her 200 metres triumph on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino dominated the women's long sprints group with 24 points, having won the 200 metres in 22.46 seconds. Britain's Lina Nielsen also impressed, capturing the 400 metres hurdles in 52.60 seconds, while Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji secured victory in the 800 metres with a time of 1:58.94. In the men's events, American Kenny Bednarek shaved one-hundredth of a second off his personal best in the 100 metres, finishing in 9.86 seconds and topping the short sprints group with 24 points. Olympic silver medallist Josh Kerr of Britain edged out gold medallist Cole Hocker by just seven-hundredths of a second in a thrilling 1500 metres race, finishing in 3:34.44. American Trevor Bassitt provided late drama in the 400 metres hurdles, outduelling Alison dos Santos and Chris Robinson to win in 45.47 seconds. He also won the men's long hurdles group with 20 points. There were also victories for Americans Trey Cunningham in the men's 100 metres short hurdles group with a time of 10.36 seconds, and Nico Young in the men's 3000 metres on his Grand Slam Track debut, while Dominican Alexander Ogando claimed the men's 200 metres in 20.13 seconds. The Grand Slam Track season will conclude with its fourth meeting in Los Angeles from 27–29 June.

Reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champ Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone tries 100m hurdles, finishes fifth

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's experiment at dropping down to the 100m hurdles ended in defeat on Saturday, with the reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion finishing fifth at the Philadelphia Grand Slam Track meeting. McLaughlin-Levrone, who has been unbeatable over her specialist event since 2019, found the going tougher over the shorter hurdles discipline at a rainy and overcast Franklin Field. The 25-year-old American superstar came home in 12.70sec and never looked like threatening Jamaican winner Ackera Nugent, who crossed in 12.44sec. Tia Jones of the United States was second in 12.60sec, with Jamaica's Megan Tapper third in 12.66sec. In other events in Saturday's meeting, Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas suffered a surprise defeat in her favoured event, beaten into second place by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. Jefferson-Wooden, a 100m bronze medallist at the Paris Olympics last year, stormed home in 21.99sec with Thomas second in 22.10sec. Tamari Davis took third in 22.59sec, just ahead of Britain's Dina Asher-Smith in 22.65. Related Topics Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone

Athletes are divided into six event groups: short sprints (racing the 100m and 200m), short hurdles (100mH and 100m or 110mH and 100m), long sprints (200m/400m), long hurdles (400mH/400m), short distance (800m/1500m) and long distance (3000m). Advertisement There are 24 men's "Racers" and 24 women's "Racers" who signed up for all four Grand Slams — four for each event group. For each individual Slam, men's and women's "Challengers" fill out the rest of the fields for every eight-athlete event group. Racers who have to withdraw from meets are replaced by new Racers or Challengers. Athletes earn points based on results, which determine champions for each event group for every Slam. One overall men's season champion and one overall women's season champion will be crowned at the end of the season. Grand Slam Track Philadelphia Key Races Women's 100m Hurdles (Short Hurdles), Saturday, 6:22 p.m. ET Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone drops down from racing the 400m and 400m hurdles to take on the 100m and 100m hurdles in Philadelphia. She has raced the 100m hurdles in past years — in the spring, as a tune-up for the 400m distance — with a personal best of 12.65 seconds. In Philadelphia, she faces seven women whose primary event is the 100m hurdles, all with a PB of 12.51 or faster. The group is led by American Tia Jones, who at the last Grand Slam clocked 12.19 to become the third-fastest woman in history. Advertisement Men's 800m (Short Distance), Saturday, 4:57 p.m. ET American Josh Hoey, a breakout star of the indoor season, tests himself against one of the kings of the 800m for the first time on an outdoor track: Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop or Canada. Hoey went from placing fourth at the 2024 Olympic Trials to running the second-fastest indoor 800m in history in February and winning the world indoor title in March. Women's 100m (Short Hurdles), Sunday, 4:18 p.m. ET McLaughlin-Levrone will race the 100m for the first time since 2018, when she clocked a wind-aided 11.07 seconds as a University of Kentucky freshman. That's actually the fastest flat 100m time of any woman in the Philadelphia short hurdles group, according to Jamaican Ackera Nugent has the fastest wind-legal personal best of the group, running 11.09 in 2021 and then again to win the Grand Slam Track Miami race. Men's 1500m (Short Distance), Sunday, 5:01 p.m. ET Another showdown among the three Paris Olympic medalists in this event: Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse. Kerr got the win last time out in Miami, while Nuguse placed second in both Kingston and Miami. Hocker has placed second or third in his five 1500m races since winning that Olympic gold. Women's 100m (Short Sprints), Sunday, 5:13 p.m. ET Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas takes on the short sprints for a second consecutive Slam after winning the long sprints title at the first meet in Kingston. Last time out in Miami, Olympic 100m bronze medalist Melissa Jefferson-Wooden edged Thomas for the short sprints crown by one point combining results from the 100m and 200m. Thomas won the 200m and placed fourth in the 100m, while Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m and was third in the 200m. Expect another duel between the two in Philadelphia. In the Racer of the Year standings, McLaughlin-Levrone tops the season-long leaderboard as the only unbeaten woman with 48 points thus far. Two-time Paris Olympic medalist Melissa Jefferson-Wooden trails her with 42 points. On the men's side, both Bednarek and dos Santos have 48 points, with Bednarek leading due to his higher dominance score (55.25 to 50.25). 1984 Olympic 1500m silver medalist Steve Cram will call the races alongside Olympians Carrie Tollefson and Anson Henry, with Radzi Chinyanganya and Paris Olympic heptathlete Taliyah Brooks serving as trackside reporter.
