Commuters left in dark as Sydney Metro train grinds to halt at Barangaroo during peak hour

Commuters on board a Sydney Metro train were left stuck in the dark after a mechanical fault left the service stranded at Barangaroo Station during Tuesday's peak hour. The incident occurred just after 4pm when a fault with the train's pantograph — the apparatus that connects the train to overhead power lines — forced it to a halt just outside the city's newest and flashiest station, which is part of the city's $41 billion Metro project. The lights flickered. The doors stayed shut. And for over 15 minutes, the train didn't budge. 'Lights dimmed before we got to the station,' one passenger posted on social media. 'Doors opened fine, then after they closed we've been unable to move … Eleven minutes and counting. Person on PA says mechanical issue.' Staff were eventually forced to manually prise open the doors to let passengers disembark. 'Metro staff are now manually trying to open the doors to let us out,' the passenger added, before confirming the train was still stationary even after the evacuation. The fault had flow-on effects across the network. A Sydney Metro spokesman confirmed a 'very limited service' was operating between Sydenham and Barangaroo, with additional delays on services running from Barangaroo to Tallawong. 'Announcements are being made onboard and on platforms,' they said. 'A technician is now on site to resolve the issue and move the train.' Commuters were advised to check transport apps and consider alternative arrangements.

Sydney commuters face more chaos after Metro services stopped in the CBD during the afternoon rush

Sydney commuters faced more chaos as Metro train services between Barangaroo and Sydenham stopped running during the afternoon rush on Tuesday. A Sydney Metro spokesman said there was an issue with a pantograph that attaches the carriage to the overhead lines on one of the trains. The spokesman said services were still operating north between Barangaroo and Tallawong, but shuttle services had replaced trains south between Barangaroo and Sydenham after 4pm. 'Announcements are being made on-board and on platforms,' the spokesman said. 'Troubleshooting of the train is underway.' Commuters have faced ongoing issues during the past week after several incidents caused long delays on Sydney's train services. An emergency at Artarmon delayed services on Monday afternoon, which followed a virtual shutdown last week after an overhead electrical wire collapsed shutting off train lines in the city's west. Premier Chris Minns green lit free transport on Monday to compensate passengers for the inconvenience. 'Commuters should give us a chance to remediate on-time running and efficiency and make sure that punctuality is back to where it should be,' he said. 'I say that in the full knowledge that where we're at the moment is nowhere near good enough.'

More commuter chaos as technical incident on Metro

Metro services are running at a 'very limited' capacity between Sydenham and Barangaroo after a train had a mechanical incident after 4pm, just before the Tuesday afternoon peak. Sydney commuters hoping to catch the Metro home from work have been the latest victims of disruptions and delays, after an incident occurred at Barangaroo station. A Sydney Metro spokesperson said an issue has arisen with the pantograph on one of the trains, which is the part on top of the carriage that fixes the vehicle to the overhead lines. Services are still running between Barangaroo and Tallawong. Shuttle services will be run between Barangaroo and Sydenham. 'Announcements are being made on-board and on platforms,' the spokesperson said. 'Troubleshooting of the train is underway. 'A technician is on the way to the train to resolve the issue and move the train. 'Customers are urged to make alternative travel arrangements and check their travel apps for the most up to date information.' Passenger services along the Metro line were delayed after 4pm, with staff at Martin Place Metro station telling passengers to use the heavy rail. Travel screens at the station were blank as afternoon crowds filled the platform. This is the third incident to hit Sydney's transport system in less than a week. Trains on the heavy rail network were delayed on Monday afternoon after a mental health incident near Artarmon resulted in a police operation, which required the train lines to be de-energised. That followed chaos on Tuesday and Wednesday last week when an overhead electrical wire collapsed on a train near Homebush shutting off nearly all train lines. Premier Chris Minns, who had yet to be briefed on the Metro debacle on Tuesday afternoon, said it was 'unusual' for the Metro 'to go down'. 'It's obviously brand new,' he said. The Premier asked commuters to have patience after multiple issues across the transport network in recent days and issues around punctuality of the heavy rail network. 'Commuters should give us a chance to remediate on-time running and efficiency and make sure that punctuality is back to where it should be,' he said. 'I say that in the full knowledge that where we're at the moment is nowhere near good enough.' Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou said Tuesday afternoon's metro failure was 'a very disappointing situation coming on top of the previous failures on the heavy rail network'. 'The repeated meltdowns of our public transport system continues to shake confidence in the system, and is not helping with the post-pandemic recovery of our city,' he said. 'It is clear the government needs to get to the root causes of these repeated breakdowns and develop solutions to provide the reliability and certainty that Sydney commuters need.'
