Symbiosis Skills University launches BTech in defence technology
Pune: Considering the country's growing need for defence technology and the increasing role of the private sector in this field, Symbiosis Skills and Professional University has launched a BTech course in defence technology starting from the academic year 2025–26. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Swati Mujumdar, pro-chancellor of the university, said that about 70% of the course would be practical-based. In addition, the university has signed MoUs with several companies working in the sector, which will enable internships for students. Mujumdar further said that the syllabus is being designed in coordination with industry experts to ensure students are equipped for emerging job roles in the defence industry as well as for entrepreneurship, if they choose to pursue it. Manish Bharadwaj, technical advisor to the chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), spoke about the importance of technology in warfare, as reflected in Operation Sindoor, and how DRDO products performed well across various sectors. "With all the networking and drones, it is a technological milestone that India achieved, and the world witnessed the power of our systems," he said. In this context, a BTech in defence technology is highly significant. He also emphasised the need for more research and innovation in the defence sector and called for greater collaboration among academia, industry, and govt for the benefit of the nation.

SSPU and UNESCO collaborate for skill based programme
Pune: An agreement was signed between Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU) and UNESCO for global educational exchange, innovative teaching methods, and capacity building on Friday. The university, in line with the 'Empowered Women, Empowered Society' programme, will focus on women's development . The MoU was signed during a one-day international conference on skill development and technical and vocational education and training , organised jointly by SSPU, UNESCO, and the National Skill Development Corporation. The event was attended by S.B. Mujumdar, President of Symbiosis, Friedrich Huebler, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, Sonam Wangchuk, Founding Director of HIA Ladakh, Shekhar Singh, Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and Swati Mujumdar, Pro-Chancellor of SSPU. Swati Mujumdar added, "Following the vision of India for 'Skill India' and 'Make in India' initiatives, our university is taking progressive steps. SSPU makes a significant contribution to building a developed India. We are focusing on women's development. Over the past five years, thousands of women were trained in future-ready skills. We emphasise providing industries with skilled workers needed in the modern era. Teachers play a crucial role in nation-building, and our university works toward supporting and strengthening them." Tim Curtis, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for South Asia, said, "With the global youth population growing, major employment challenges will arise.
