New improvements to healthtech collaboration platform rolled out

Healthcare tech projects in Singapore could be developed faster thanks to a booster shot from the national HeathTech agency. Synapxe is adding new features to the HealthX Innovation Sandbox for healthcare tech developers, so that they can access industry-grade interoperability standards. The agency says the improvements will help them innovate in an environment close to real-world settings. Nicolas Ng with more.

Synapxe launches second health tech sandbox offering improved data access, cloud services from Microsoft Azure

[SINGAPORE] National health technology agency Synapxe has launched the second iteration of its healthcare tech sandbox, providing more opportunities to experiment with emerging healthcare technologies. This sandbox is the only platform that leverages Singapore's healthcare commercial cloud, which allows startups to develop, test and validate solutions for public healthcare, said Synapxe in a press release on Wednesday (May 21). The first HealthX Sandbox was launched in September 2023. HealthX Innovation Sandbox 2.0 offers improved access to test data that closely resembles the real world. Developers will be allowed to create in a close-to-real-world environment through data generated by Healix, a platform for health empowerment through advanced learning and intelligent exchange. Healix is a comprehensive cloud-based analytics platform for the public healthcare sector that was launched by Synapxe in 2024. New application programming interfaces were also added in this second version of the sandbox to lower technical barriers and enable faster development and integration. Startups have access to Microsoft cloud infrastructure and funding, including the opportunity to apply for Azure trial passes and Azure sponsorship credits to their proof-of-concept projects, said Synapxe. The passes will provide easy access to various Azure Services, Github, Azure Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service as the platform to develop their next artificial intelligence (AI) application. HealthX Sandbox 2.0 is also extending its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer AWS technologies and training programmes. Elsie Tan, AWS Singapore's worldwide public sector country leader, said: 'Our expanded collaboration with Synapxe for Sandbox 2.0 will enable healthcare innovators to leverage powerful AWS technologies to make data-driven clinical and operational decisions, enable precision medicine, and decrease the cost of care.' Synapxe noted that 11 new health tech innovations across AI, generative AI and 3D imaging have been deployed in the first sandbox since September 2023. Public healthcare institutions are in talks with the relevant parties for five of the projects to be piloted. A project in the sandbox is Carecam's stroke rehabilitation recovery programme, which uses infrared motion cameras and AI to monitor the recovery progress of stroke patients. Being part of the sandbox programme has been beneficial to understand the requirements necessary to deploy a solution in the healthcare environment, said Dr Elson Yong, co-founder and CEO of Carecam. 'I think it is a unique programme that you wouldn't be able to see in any part of the world, (as) this gives us access to clinicians (and) Synapxe folks,' he added. Without the sandbox, there would be many challenges in getting a solution like Carecam into a clinical setting, said Dr Ong Poo Lee, a consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Lengthy security assessments with the data needed for a pilot or proof of concept would lag advances in technology. 'A secure sandbox system will ... help us try to implement and test our idea so we can test fast, learn fast, implement fast and if need be fail fast,' said Dr Ong. Glenn Neo, Synapxe's director of innovation capabilities enablement, said: 'Collaboration begets innovation... and (we) welcome new innovators to create an impact for Singapore's public healthcare sector.'
