AITUC urges district Erode Collector to fix minimum daily wages for temporary workers
The Erode district unit of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the District Collector to fix the minimum daily wages for temporary workers employed in government departments across the district for the year 2025–2026.
This was among the resolutions passed at a meeting of the district committee, chaired by district vice-president T.A. Selvam, that was held recently.
Another resolution noted that thousands of temporary workers, including those engaged in malaria and dengue prevention activities, are employed by local bodies and government departments in the district. These workers are paid on a daily basis, with minimum wages fixed by the district administration and published in the district Gazette. However, the minimum daily wage for the period from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, is yet to be determined. The resolution called for the minimum wage to be fixed in accordance with the Minimum Wages Act, 1948.
The resolution also highlighted that, although the minimum wage for 2024–25 was published in the gazette, the municipalities of Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Bhavani, and Puliyampatti have failed to pay workers the stipulated wages. In addition, private contract firms operating in government hospitals have also not complied with the wage regulations.
