Steelers star T.J. Watt skips OTAs while waiting for new contract extension in Pittsburgh
T.J. Watt has been away from the Pittsburgh Steelers this week while he waits for his new deal. While his decision to skip the team's voluntary workouts could be due to a number of reasons, it could also be a sign of what's to come amid negotiations for a deal that may very well make him the highest-paid defender in football. Watt is currently set to enter the final year of his four-year, $112 million extension with the Steelers this fall. That will pay him just more than $21 million, which is roughly half of what the market is now set at for a pass rusher. Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett makes $40 million per season on his contract, which is the largest defensive deal in the league. It's unclear if Watt will surpass that deal, but he's clearly proven himself as an elite defender throughout his eight seasons in the league. Watt has led the NFL in sacks three times, including in 2021 when he matched the league record with 22.5 sacks. Watt was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year that season. He's led the league in forced fumbles twice, too, and he has 108 sacks in his career. Though last season was a bit of a down year for him — he had 61 total tackles and 11.5 sacks, which were his worst numbers in a complete season since his rookie campaign — Watt is still one of the best defenders in the league even as he is set to turn 31 this fall. Again, Watt's reasoning for skipping OTAs this week are not known. It's very possible that it's not contract-related whatsoever. But with a contract issue ongoing, it could absolutely become an issue in the weeks and months to come if it's not solved soon. Thankfully, though, it doesn't sound like either side wants to move on here. 'I'm confident he's not going anywhere,' Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith said on the NFL Network earlier this month. 'I know that he loves being here. He loves being in Pittsburgh and the city of Pittsburgh loves him. So I know that they're going to do whatever they can to get a deal done, hopefully sooner than later because everyone knows he's a generational talent, generational player. So we all know that he wants to be in this building.'

T.J. Oshie To Make ESPN Studio Debut On Tuesday During Western Conference Final
Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie. (Photo by John McCreary, courtesy of the Washington Capitals). As he closes the book on his playing career, Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie is trying his hand at TV, and will have quite the debut on Tuesday. Oshie will be in studio with Steve Levy, Mark Messier and PK Subban on ESPN for Game 4 of the Western Conference Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars. Advertisement While Oshie has been on NHL Now and a guest on several other shows, this will be his first time as an analyst on the crew. The 38-year-old, who won the Stanley Cup in 2018 with Washington, missed the 2024-25 campaign amid chronic back issues that would leave him "literally on the floor." While he didn't play with the team, he was around the facility and stayed close to the team while also keeping up with efforts to stay connected to the community. His contract is set to expire in July, and the expectation is that he will hang up the skates as D.C. prepares for the future. In 1010 career games over 16 seasons, Oshie racked up 302 goals and 393 assists for 695 points, with 192 of those goals and 193 of those helpers coming with the Capitals as he made a name for himself as a fan favorite and leader on and off the ice.

The Pacers are streaking again. This time it shouldn't be a surprise.
The Pacers are streaking again. This time it shouldn't be a surprise. When the Indiana Pacers made the Eastern Conference Finals a year ago, people dismissed their run as merely the result of a weak path in a conference with one real contender. Especially considering the teams they beat (Milwaukee and New York) were dealt major injury blows along the way. While that was mostly true – five teams in the West had as many wins as the second-best team in the East – it ignored the fact Indiana was only a No. 5 seed itself, overcoming the third-worst conference odds entering the playoffs to become one of the last two teams standing. The Pacers weren't an undeserving challenger to the eventual champion Boston Celtics. They were a rising Eastern Conference power that happened to peak at the right time. "The Pacers, that was the hardest series that we had last year,' Jayson Tatum told the Club 520 podcast in the fall. 'Just like how fast they play, they would sub in three people at a time. T.J. McConnell was unreal at home. Obi Toppin, the role players that they got are all so selfless. They don't stop moving.' We were warned. Fast forward to this season, and Indiana's emergence as a threat to knock off the conference's top teams couldn't be clearer as the Pacers are again on the doorstep of another conference finals berth. Only this time people won't have any choice but to respect a deep run, because the Pacers will have to go through the top seed in the conference to make it happen. And odds are completely stacked against Indiana to beat the 64-win Cleveland Cavaliers. Among the NBA's top title favorites since racing out to a 15-0 start to the season, and fresh off a first-round sweep over the Miami Heat, the Cavs hold -500 odds to win their series against the Pacers (+375). They're a 7.5-point favorite for Game 1 on Sunday. The reasons why aren't hard to find. The Cavs own the league's third-best net rating on the season, buoyed by a league-leading offensive rating that rivaled that of the Celtics a year ago. They have a top-10 defense anchored by Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley, who along with Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland was an all-star this year. Seven different players averaged double-digit points in their series against Miami. They're not just good. They're deep. So where does hope lie that Indiana can knock off the Cavs? Like last year, the Pacers might just be peaking at the right time. Unlike Cleveland's defense, which sank to 14th after the all-star break, Indiana's 21st-ranked unit actually improved as the season winded to a close. The Pacers had the eighth-best defensive rating after the break, boosting their net rating to No. 7, which ranked just one spot behind Cleveland. Over the final month, Indiana actually ranked better than the Cavs on offense and defense. And Indiana also gets contributions across the board, with seven players averaging double-digit scoring in their first-round series against Milwaukee. In the end, though, Indiana's ability to prevail will land on the shoulders of their leader, Tyrese Haliburton. After closing out the Bucks with his heroics in Game 5, Haliburton has to continue being Indiana's engine. His availability and ability to consistently create offense for the Pacers gives them their best chance to beat the Cavs. When he went down with a hamstring injury in Game 2 of last year's ECF, so too did Indiana's chances to upset the Celtics. As long as he's on the floor, nobody should be surprised to see the Pacers give the Cavs all they can handle.
