Toyota confirms will produce GR Corolla in UK from 2026

As earlier reports have suggested, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has announced it plans to begin production of the Toyota GR Corolla at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) from 2026. Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) was created in 2009 and has since become the 'fastest-growing brand in the Toyota Motor Corporation portfolio', Toyota says. The first TGR product – GR Supra – debuted in 2019. This was followed by GR Yaris in 2020, GR86 in 2021 and GR Corolla in 2022. Toyota says the selection of TMUK as the newest production location for a TGR vehicle reflects Toyota's efforts to optimise its global production footprint to produce and deliver vehicles to customers as swiftly as possible. Toyota said it also recognises the capability of TMUK, its staff and its supply chain, and the 'deep motorsport culture and skill base within the United Kingdom'. Preparations have been underway since 2024, when the team at TMUK and key suppliers were first informed about the project; the first vehicle is scheduled to be produced in 2026. Yoshihiro Nakata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, said: 'We are proud that TMUK, our first plant in Europe, has also been selected as the first overseas Toyota plant to produce GR vehicles, securing this expansion project for TGR worldwide. We very much appreciate the historical support and recognition of the United Kingdom and would like to continue to contribute to UK society as a 'Best in Town' company.' Details of the markets for sales, production volumes and investment levels will be confirmed at a later date, Toyota said. The decision comes amidst the backdrop of the Trump administration's recent agreement to lower tariffs on auto imports from Britain to 10% for up to 100,000 vehicles annually. Meanwhile, Japan seeks to repeal the 25% tariffs imposed on all auto imports by the US, presenting an additional challenge for global automakers. Currently, Toyota manufactures the GR Corolla in Japan for both domestic and international markets, including North America. However, the high demand from engine enthusiasts in North America has outpaced supply. Toyota's UK Burnaston plant, operational since 1992, has experienced a production decline post-Brexit. It already produces the Corolla GR's base model, making it a suitable choice for the new production line. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing seals commanding 1-2-3-4 finish at Rally Islas Canarias

MADRID, May 17: TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team (TGR-WRT) showcased complete domination at the Rally Islas Canarias, clinching a stellar 1-2-3-4 finish at the first pure asphalt round of the season in style. The emphatic victory was spearheaded by the electrifying performance of Kalle Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen (No. 69 GR YARIS Rally1), marking a grand return to the top of the podium. They were challenged by Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais(No. 17), Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin(No. 33), and Takamoto Katsuta and co-driver Aaron Johnston(No. 18) to claim second, third, and fourth place, respectively. Akio Toyoda, TGR-WRT Chairman, commented: "This wonderful result we achieved was made possible by the efforts of every single member of TGR-WRT. It was amazing that we could finish 1-2-3-4 with Kalle, Seb, Elfyn, and Takamoto on the roads of Gran Canaria, which we drove for the first time. Even on unfamiliar roads, our engineers and mechanics managed to prepare the cars with setups that the drivers already felt confident with in shakedown." Toyoda added: "We are a team where members can say thank you to each other while fighting together, and TGR-WRT always aspires to be such a team. Thank you, everyone! Great work! This rally, in particular, was filled with everyone's hearts. We have a busy schedule ahead leading up to Rally Finland. Let's continue to push as one team!' In the first rally with the new hard-compound Hankook asphalt tyre, TGR-WRT exhibited a commanding performance. Rovanperä and Halttunen dominated from the start and sealed the top spot by a margin of 53.5 seconds, setting the best time in the rally-ending Power Stage. With this, Rovanperä has become the most successful driver for Toyota in the WRC with 16 career wins. The rally also marked Ogier's strong return to action. Teaming up with Landais, he even bettered Rovanperä in the penultimate stage to secure second place on the podium. By finishing third, Evans and Martin attained their fourth top-three finish of the season. With 43 points, Evans is now the frontrunner for the drivers' championship title. With this emphatic win, Toyota reigns at the top of the table with a strong 208 points in contention for the manufacturers' title. Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the Nürburgring 24 ‎Hours endurance race. Toyota's participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established TGR ‎to consolidate all of its motorsports activities under one in-house brand. Representing ‎Toyota's belief that 'the roads build the people, and the people build the cars,' TGR highlights the role of motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota's commitment to ‎making 'ever-better' cars. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme conditions of various motorsports events, TGR aims to forge new technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure, and joy of driving to everyone.

Masters 2025: Tiger Woods skips champions dinner while recovering from Achilles injury

Tiger Woods has skipped the annual Masters dinner this year after all. Woods was not with the group of former winners who gathered for the winner's at the Augusta National clubhouse on Tuesday night. While that's not too surprising, as Woods is not in the field this week while he recovers from his Achilles injury he sustained last month, the Masters dinner isn't typically something former winners skip if they can help it. Woods ruptured his left Achilles while training at home last month, which led to surgery and has since knocked him out indefinitely. It's unclear how long he will be sidelined, but Woods likely won't try to compete again on the PGA Tour this season. This will be just the fifth Masters he's missed since making his debut as an amateur in 1995. Advertisement Woods hasn't been spotted in Augusta this week ahead of the first major championship of the year, either. He made an announcement regarding a new 9-hole short course and a TGR Learning Lab in Augusta with the course on Monday, though he did so remotely. Outside of confirming his relationship with Vanessa Trump, and a perfectly-timed April Fools joke, Woods has been very quiet since his injury. The Masters dinner is a long-running tradition that Ben Hogan started back in 1952. He invited previous winners to join him for dinner ahead of that year's tournament, and it's carried on ever since. Woods, who has won the Masters five times in his career, has attended every dinner that he's been eligible for except in 2021, which came just a few months after his Southern California car crash. Typically, all living winners attend the dinner — though that's something that's actually only happened a handful of times. Last season, only Ángel Cabrera and Sandy Lyle missed the winner. Cabrera is back in the field this week for the first time since his arrest and imprisonment in South America, and Lyle opted to miss the dinner to remain home in Scotland with his sick wife. Advertisement Despite Woods' absence, the dinner went on as planned with host Scottie Scheffler running the show. Scheffler picked the menu, which included cheeseburger sliders, wood-fired cowboy ribeye, Texas-style chili and a chocolate chip skillet cookie for dessert, among other things. The menu is similar to what Scheffler served in 2023 after he picked up his first Masters win. Scheffler, who is still the top-ranked golfer in the world, is the betting favorite entering the week. Rory McIlroy, who is searching for his first major championship win in more than a decade, is close behind him. While it's unknown when Woods will take the course again at Augusta National, his spot at the Masters dinner will be waiting for him whenever he's ready.

Augusta National annoucnes 2 new ventures with Tiger Woods

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WSAV) — On the opening day of Masters week, Augusta National Golf Club Chairman and The Masters Tournament Chairman Fred S. Ridley announced two new partnerships with Tiger Woods on April 7. The first is Tiger Woods will lead the redesign of the municipal golf course in Augusta known as 'The Patch.' The course will be called 'The Loop at the Patch.' The course is currently being renovated and expects to be ready by the start of next year's Masters. The course will play about 6700 yards from the back tees, but will have tee boxes for all skill levels. Also included in the redesign are a brand new clubhouse and driving range. The second announcement was the TGR foundation, which is Tiger Woods' nonprofit, and Augusta National will partner to open a TGR Learning Lab in Augusta. This will be the fourth learning lab in the nation. The expected completion date is 2028. The facility will be located in the Harrisburg Neighborhood, which is in the Richmond County School District. The school district is home to 27 schools in a 10-mile radius. The learning lab could service more than 23,000 students. The expectation is to learn the game of golf but also other life skills as well. Chairman Ridley is also expected to speak on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Tiger Woods will lead design of short course at Augusta Municipal

Tiger Woods talks to his Jupiter Links Golf Club teammate Kevin Kisner before a TGL match in Florida in January. (Marta Lavandier / Associated Press) Tiger Woods isn't at the Masters — he's recovering from a ruptured Achilles' tendon — but he has still made a big impact on this year's tournament. Augusta National announced Monday that Woods will lead the design of a short course as part of the redevelopment of Augusta Municipal Golf Course, nicknamed 'The Patch.' It will be a nine-hole, par-three course called The Loop at the Patch, in honor of the local caddies who for years have gathered there. Advertisement Two years ago, Augusta National announced a plan to renovate The Patch, which closed late last year so construction could begin. The course is scheduled to reopen in April 2026. Read more: Elite Black caddies, once key advisors to Masters winners, have faded from spotlight 'I happened to be playing golf with Tiger a year ago, a couple of weeks before the Masters, and I thought I would mention The Patch project,' said Fred S. Ridley, chairman of Augusta National. 'It was clear when I shared the concept that it sort of piqued his interest, and that was sort of the beginning of a conversation, a dialogue that took place between our organizations. After a few meetings took place, the idea grew from what we were doing to how Tiger and [Woods' foundation] TGR could be involved.' Advertisement Woods, a five-time Masters champion, has also committed to building a TGR Learning Lab in Augusta, which will provide access to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics education for young people in the area.
