Performance-enhancing drugs are everywhere on social media, says Syarul
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Syarul Azman Mahen Abdullah, a six-time World and Asian bodybuilding champion, is deeply concerned by how easy it is to buy banned performance-enhancing drugs in Malaysia today. Syarul said sales of such drugs online, especially on social media, have become rampant and fears users could seriously harm themselves. He urged the government to take stern action to prevent the issue from getting worse. "There are so many performance enhancing drugs available on social media today, I have even had people offer such drugs to me," said Syarul when met today (May 26). "Sometimes I check the people or accounts who are following me on social media. "I get shocked at times when I check and see that they are actually selling all sorts of these performance-enhancing substances. "Newcomers to the sport might see this as a shortcut and try to use these substances. It can affect their health very seriously and can even cause a heart attack. "These are actually drugs which are meant to be used under strict doctor supervision in hospitals. "In the past, you had to go to the gym and try and talk to people to get such substances but now, everything is done online. "The government has to do something to stop this. I believe the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can do something about it." Syarul said growth hormones, peptides and anabolic steroids among the performance-enhancing substances commonly sold. Syarul retired from competitive bodybuilding last year and currently coaches the national bodybuilding team. He was speaking after attending the launch of the Drug Free Youth Campaign awareness video in Kuala Lumpur today (May 26) - officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh - in cooperation with TGV Cinemas. TGV Cinemas will from now be screening a short drug awareness video before movies are shown at their cinemas nationwide. This is to create greater awareness regarding the dangers of recreational drug use.

Hannah calls For Review Of BAM Ecosystem To Ensure Player Welfare
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh hopes that newly-appointed Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will review the national governing body's ecosystem to ensure the welfare of all national shuttlers is safeguarded. Hannah also advised shuttlers to remain under the BAM umbrella instead of turning professional so that they can continue receiving full government support through the association. "There are many factors to be considered when a shuttler contemplates staying with BAM or turning pro. The advantage of staying with BAM is that they will have ready sparring partners, which is something that will be lacking should they turn pro and which can also affect their performance. bootstrap slideshow "That is why I'm asking BAM president Tengku Zafrul to review this ecosystem and ensure the players receive the best possible support. If possible, for the shuttlers to remain with BAM so that the government's assistance will reach them and there will be an orderly system… various types of government support are channelled through BAM,' she said. She said this at the launch of a video to raise awareness about the Drug-Free Youth campaign in collaboration with a cinema chain and national athletes, which was also attended by National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh here today. Meanwhile, Hannah said she was satisfied with the performance of the national shuttlers at the 2024 Malaysia Masters, which ended yesterday. "I believe that with the presence of coaches and the support from the RTG (Road to Gold) programme, we can continue to raise their performance level. We have allocated a budget for the National Sports Council (NSC) talent development programme this year to ensure a constant supply of new talents,' she said. Earlier, at the event, Hannah announced a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), through the Rakan Muda Development Division, the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN) and TGV Cinemas to further empower the Drug-Free Youth campaign. Hannah said the strategic collaboration involves the screening of videos raising awareness of the dangers of drugs and banned substances before the screening of movies at all TGV Cinemas nationwide.

Yeoh hopes to see all-Malaysian doubles final at LA2028
KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh hopes that Malaysia's men's doubles pairs will be able to maintain their fine form until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA2028). Fans were treated to an all-Malaysian men's doubles final at the Malaysia Masters yesterday (May 25) which saw Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun upsetting higher ranked duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to claim the title. It was Malaysia's first men's doubles title win at the Malaysia Masters in 12 years. Yeoh was visibly pleased with both pairs' performances throughout the week. "Yesterday was a good day for Malaysian badminton. Our performances, especially in the men's doubles events, have been improving," said Yeoh today (May 26). "With there being a new coach (Herry IP) and the Road to Gold (RTG) programme, I am confident we can continue to help them achieve many more successes. "My hope is that when we reach LA2028, we will have both (Malaysian) pairs in the final so there will be no pressure. "We want the gold and we also want the silver." Yeoh added that she was also pleased with professionals Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Goh Sze Fei who are expected to become the new world No. 1 men's doubles pair this week. "Of course I am happy for both Izzuddin and Sze Fei," said Yeoh. Yeoh again reminded players to consider all factors before deciding whether to remain under the BA of Malaysia (BAM) programme or turn professional. "As I have said before, I hope all badminton players will think carefully before deciding whether to remain with BAM or turn professional. There are many factors to consider," said Yeoh. "The advantage of being within the BAM programme is that the players have many good sparring partners (to train with). "Outside (professional), there are less sparring partners and this can affect their performances. "I have asked the new BAM president (Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz) to see how we can create a better ecosystem for the players." On a separate note, Yeoh said she considers the Axiata Arena's leaky roof issue to be resolved. "I have not discussed the matter with Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz. I was there for the finals yesterday (Malaysia Masters) and consider the matter to be resolved," said Yeoh. The Axiata Arena's leaky roof had halted play during the earlier rounds of the Malaysia Masters last week. Yeoh was speaking after officiating the launch of the Drug Free Youth Campaign awareness video in Kuala Lumpur today in cooperation with TGV Cinemas. TGV Cinemas will from now be screening a short drug awareness video before movies are shown at their cinemas nationwide. This is to create greater awareness regarding the dangers of recreational drug use.

With its theatrical release slated for May 1, 2025, the film has generated massive anticipation among fans and the trade. Positioned as one of the most anticipated Kollywood releases of the year, 'Retro' is now set to storm cinemas in less than 24 hours and early signs suggest it could become one of Suriya's best openers. Suriya's 'Retro', a power-packed tale of redemption, romance, and reckoning in the 90s. 'Retro' is an emotionally charged romantic action film that blends raw intensity with heartfelt storytelling. Directed by visionary filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, the movie transports audiences back to the vibrant yet volatile 1990s—a time of shifting loyalties, gang rivalries, and emotional awakenings. At the center of this gripping narrative is Suriya, who delivers a commanding performance as a reformed gangster battling the ghosts of his past. The film follows the journey of a man who once lived by the gun but has chosen to turn his back on violence in pursuit of a peaceful life. However, the shadows he left behind refuse to stay buried. When his estranged wife, portrayed by Pooja Hegde, becomes entangled in a dangerous web of revenge and old enmities, he is forced to return to the very world he tried to escape. What follows is a compelling mix of action, romance, and psychological tension as he walks the fine line between redemption and relapse. Set against the backdrop of bustling cities, underground clubs, and remote hideouts of the 1990s, 'Retro' authentically captures the spirit of the era. From fashion to music to the emotional cadence of the time, the film uses every frame to transport viewers into its richly textured world. Karthik Subbaraj ensures that this isn't just another action film—it's a poignant exploration of a man torn between two lives: the one he left behind and the one he dreams of building. What sets 'Retro' apart is its layered storytelling. The action is brutal and unflinching, yet it never overshadows the emotional gravity at the film's core. Themes of love lost, second chances, and the painful journey toward self-forgiveness are woven seamlessly into the narrative. Suriya's nuanced portrayal brings vulnerability and fire to a character constantly at war with himself. With a powerful script, a stirring soundtrack, and a gripping visual style, 'Retro' stands poised to be one of 2025's most anticipated films. Had a grand global theatrical release on May 1, 2025, the film promises not just high-octane entertainment but also a deeply human story that resonates long after the credits roll.
