TSA issues warning about smartphones, devices at the airport. Here is what to avoid
In the wake banning portable chargers from checked luggage, TSA has a warning for travelers — and their devices. Anyone who uses USB chargers to power electronics should exercise extreme caution when inside an airport, the TSA says. Here's what you should know before your next flight. In a Facebook post, TSA warned that USB ports, commonly used to charge cellphones, laptops and other portable devices, can present serious risks, making your sensitive information more vulnerable to hackers and scammers. Passengers are urged to be aware of the risks involved when using the airport's public USB charging ports. TSA warns passengers not to plug phones or devices directly into a USB port when inside an airport because of a cyber-theft scam called 'juice/port jacking.' Using the free USB chargers can allow hackers to access your device, bank account information and more. Bad actors can load malware onto public USB charging stations that are commonly found in airports and hotel lobbies, according to the Federal Communications Commission. "Juice jacking" can happen when bad actors install malware into public USB ports, hoping to acquire sensitive data or hijack a device. "Malware installed through a corrupted USB port can lock a device or export personal data and passwords directly to the perpetrator," the FCC states. "Criminals can then use that information to access online accounts or sell it to other bad actors." Similarly, using the airport's free Wi-Fi can carry cybersecurity risks. TSA says to avoid using the airport's free public Wi-Fi, especially for any online purchases. "Do not ever enter any sensitive info while using unsecured Wi-Fi," TSA states. Instead of using a public USB charging port, TSA says passengers should use a TSA-compliant power brick or battery pack and plug in their devices through that. The FCC provided additional tips to help prevent falling victim to "juice jacking": Using AC power outlets can help you avoid any potential risks. Pack AC, car chargers, and your own USB cables with you when traveling. Carry an external battery. Consider carrying a charging-only cable, which prevents data from sending or receiving while charging, from a trusted supplier. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced a new rules to make air travel more safe and secure. Starting now, seven types of items are banned from all checked bags on US flights. These items must now go in your carry-on bag, not your checked luggage. The reason? These items use lithium batteries, which can sometimes overheat and catch fire. Fires in the plane's cargo area are very dangerous. Here are the 7 things you can't pack in checked bags anymore: All of these items have lithium batteries, which can be risky if they get damaged, overcharged, or get too hot. If that happens, the battery can catch fire. FAA said in a statement, 'When a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or at planeside, all spare lithium batteries and power banks must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin. The battery terminals must be protected from short circuit." Lithium batteries can go into something called 'thermal runaway.' That means they get too hot and may start a fire. This can happen if: A fire in the plane's cargo hold can spread fast and cause serious damage. That's why TSA and FAA are taking this step to keep flights safe. TSA Facebook post reads, "In this technology age, cybersecurity has never been more important. You've likely heard about things like email scams and social media scams (tip: don't accept that friend request from your buddy's 'new' profile), but today we want to share our two best tips for staying cyber safe at airports while you're traveling." The post added, "Hackers can install malware at USB ports (we've been told that's called 'juice/port jacking'). So, when you're at an airport do not plug your phone directly into a USB port. Bring your TSA-compliant power brick or battery pack and plug in there". The post concluded, "Don't use free public WiFi, especially if you're planning to make any online purchases. Do not ever enter any sensitive info while using unsecure WiFi."
