Outgoing Man United star puts European clubs on red alert with update on his future - as he outlines his desire to LEAVE the Premier League

Christian Eriksen has pricked up the antennae of clubs around Europe by announcing his intention to leave the Premier League. The Manchester United star will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires on June 30 - and that is likely to end a run of 11 years in English football. Eriksen, 33, has added an FA Cup and Carabao Cup to his memory board during his time with United, completing a remarkable recovery after his cardiac arrest at the Euros in 2021. But he admits has has 'had his turn' in the world's best league and wants a fresh start elsewhere. 'Right now there is nothing. There is interest all around, but there is nothing that I am close to signing,' he told Danish broadcaster TV 2 Sport. 'My focus will be to play international matches and then have a good summer holiday. Then we will see how long the holiday will be. 'I would rather get away from the Premier League. I feel I have had my turn in the Premier League, so I am looking outside the English borders. 'It's been a great place for me and my family, and we've been there for many years. When I moved from Tottenham to Inter, it wasn't the plan for me to go back to England. 'I've been there for three and a half years again since then, so you can never say never, but the priority is for me to leave.' There is one club abroad that Eriksen won't join - Danish outfit Odense Boldklub, where he spent some years in his youth. Eriksen was spotted in Odense last week and was actually getting married to his long-term partner Sabrina Kvist Jensen, as per TV 2 Sport. But there was speculation that he could have been there to iron out a return to Odense - a proposition he has brutally shot down. 'I got it sent to me from someone who asked if I should return to OB. 'My good agent has also been out and about saying that I shouldn't. It's the football rumour mill. I hope no one has put money on it happening now, because then they'll lose.' Eriksen wrapped up his Old Trafford story with a penalty in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season. While he did not go on to lift the Europa League, he appeared to feel nothing but gratitude to the club. He said: 'I've really enjoyed my time. It's a club I've always looked up to – the club size and everything around it. I've loved the pressure, loved the style of play with the different managers and the people at the club. 'I mean, they've taken really good care of me and my family, so in that sense I've had three very, very good years. Obviously it's been a lot of ups and downs in football, but I think in general I've had a special time.'

Anand Mahindra hails Gukesh's reaction to Magnus Carlsen's table slam: ‘His silence roared'

Gukesh, the youngest world champion in chess history, took over the Internet after defeating Magnus Carlsen, five-time world champion, in Round 6 of the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament. The match spanned 62 moves and lasted over four hours. After his defeat, Carlsen slammed the table in frustration before shaking Gukesh's hand. As he exited, the Norwegian chess Grandmaster also gave the young Indian Grandmaster a pat on the back. In a strong tribute, industrialist Anand Mahindra lauded India's young Grandmaster for his poised victory over Magnus Carlsen, highlighting the striking contrast between Gukesh's quiet confidence and Carlsen's emotional outburst. Sharing a video of Carlsen angrily slamming his fist on the table after the loss in their classical match at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, Mahindra wrote on X, 'Carlsen's visible frustration at the end wasn't just a tantrum — it was the greatest compliment the World Champion could receive from the GOAT. No fist pump. No smirk. Gukesh didn't need one. His silence roared louder than Carlsen's exit.' Commending Gukesh's performance, Prime Minister Modi wrote, 'An exceptional achievement by Gukesh! Congratulations to him for triumphing over the very best. For perhaps the first time, the Norwegian Grandmaster appeared to be questioning himself. Speaking to TV 2 Sport in a clip shared by Norway Chess on social media, Carlsen said, 'I generally feel good in this tournament, I just don't think it's fun to play anymore, and that's the problem. I'm sitting there in the middle of the game, thinking that I have the same position as I had so many times. It's just moving slowly.'

Magnus Carlsen's broken confidence summed up in his own words after shock defeat to D Gukesh: ‘I just don't think it's…'

D Gukesh scripted an epic comeback win vs Magnus Carlsen on Sunday, in their Round 6 Norway Chess 2025 encounter. The 18-year-old staged a comeback from a losing position to defeat the World No. 1. The match lasted in 62 moves and over four hours. Carlsen's reaction summed up the moment as he lost, slamming the table in rage. After that, he also shook hands with Gukesh, who stood up, and looked dazed. Meanwhile, Carlsen even patted his back, on his way out. Speaking to TV 2 Sport (shared via Norway Chess on social media), Carlsen spoke on his defeat to Gukesh and felt that he doesn't find classical chess fun anymore. In his words, the Norwegian also looked like he was finally doubting himself for the first time ever. 'I generally feel good in this tournament, I just don't think it's fun to play anymore, and that's the problem. I'm sitting there in the middle of the game, thinking that I have the same position as I had so many times. It's just moving slowly,' he said. 'I don't find it exciting, and I know I can play really well. It is satisfying to play well, but then I collapsed towards the end, and showed great weaknesses; Gukesh fights really well,' he added. It was also Gukesh's maiden classical win vs Carlsen, as the match finished in 62 moves and over four hours. Meanwhile, Gukesh was humble as ever after the win. Speaking to Chess24, he said, 'I was just trying to play moves that were tricky for him and luckily he got into time scramble. One thing I learnt from this tournament is that time scrambles can get too much out of control.' '99 out of 100 times I would lose. Just a lucky day,' he added. For Gukesh, the win had a special meaning, as he also defeated the World No. 1, who had quit the official FIDE cycle and would not be participating in the World C'ships.

Christian Eriksen expects to leave Manchester United in the summer

Christian Eriksen says he expects to leave Manchester United when his contract expires in June 2025. The 33-year-old says he has not received an update about his contract situation and is unsure where he will be playing his football next season. Eriksen added his preference would be to stay in Europe, but he played down the idea of returning to his native Denmark, or moving to the United States. Advertisement 'I haven't thought much about it (the future),' Eriksen told reporters at Denmark's international camp on Tuesday, as reported to Danish news outlet TV 2 Sport. 'In my head I'm prepared to find something new. What that will be is not something I've decided yet.' The midfielder joined United on a three-year deal in the summer of 2022, moving to the club as a free agent following the conclusion of his Brentford contract. The Athletic reported this month Eriksen, who earns a wage towards the higher end of United's pay structure, is not expected to be offered an extension. 'I haven't heard anything, and when I don't, I assume that the collaboration stops,' he said of his contract situation. 'That's how I interpret it. Everyone knows that the contract expires, so I figure there's only one way (it's going).' Eriksen added he was not yet ready to move back to Denmark but did not rule this out later in his career, while he said the U.S. would be too far for his family. Eriksen was an important part of Erik ten Hag's side during his debut season at United, making 44 appearances in all competitions as the club finished third in the Premier League, won the Carabao Cup and reached the FA Cup final. However, his minutes were more restricted last term, featuring 28 times either side of a one-month absence with a knee injury. In March 2024, he admitted he was unhappy with his lack of game time. Eriksen has been in and out of the United team this season, facing competition from Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo for the two starting central midfield spots in Ruben Amorim's side. He has started United's last two matches in the Premier League, but was restricted to substitute cameos in the last-16 Europa League tie against Real Sociedad — United's final chance of silverware this season.
