Yvonne Strahovski Makes Us Wonder: Did The Handmaid's Tale Finale Hint at a Pairing That Was There All Along?
Now that we all know how The Handmaid's Tale ends and June's story begins, it's time to turn our attention to a slightly less important — yet nevertheless pressing — question: Didn't it seem like Serena Joy and Mark Tuello kinda had a slight thing for each other? On its face, the idea is ridiculous. Serena, played by Yvonne Strahovski, was the ur-tradwife, a religious conservative whose quest for power was instrumental in replacing the United States of America with the hypocritical patriarchy of Gilead. Meanwhile Tuello, a high-ranking American military commander played by Sam Jaeger, spent his tenure in the Hulu series working to bring down the abomination of a nation that Serena helped create. More from TVLine Dave Nemetz Reviews Adults: FX's Hilarious Gen Z Sitcom Gives TV a Much-Needed Youth Infusion The Handmaid's Tale Boss Reveals the Character He Almost Killed Off in the Series Finale (But Didn't) The Handmaid's Tale's Elisabeth Moss Takes Us Inside Directing the Series Finale: Ending Show Without That Big Character Return 'Didn't Feel Right' That said, the moment Tuello was introduced in Season 2, we felt a little something-something of a potential romance brewing between the characters — despite the fact that, at one point, he arrested her as a war criminal. So we decided to ask Strahovski about it during a recent chat about the finale. (Read a full episode recap here, then see why Serena almost died in the show's final hour). TVLINE | Can we talk about the alternate universe in which Tuello and Serena are absolutely a couple? Especially when Sam first joined the show, there was a very interesting vibe between the two of STRAHOVSKI | Well, yeah, I mean, I think he came in pretty purposefully flirty in that very first scene. I mean, he was gonna use everything he had to try and get Serena to talk. It's funny, comparing that scene to now this episode, [Season 6, Episode] 9 scene where she does talk, right? Essentially, she does give away the information. So yeah, Mark did try. And I think he, for the longest time, tried to appeal to her in that way. They were manipulating each other in a lot of ways. It was such a smart way to go about it, because Serena is starved of love and attention and men desiring her in a world where she… doesn't have that in Gilead. So it was a very interesting choice, and then I think she just gave it right back to him. TVLINE | I'm here for it, is all.[Laughs] Sure. To get, you know, a better room in the Detention Center. Get some nice wardrobe provisions. Sure, Marky Mark. [Laughs] TVLINE | And how things change by the finale, when he's barking at her to get on the bus to the refugee center!Yeah. But there is a hint. We do leave it with a little hint. I was joking around on set, because his last line to Serena is, 'I'll find you.' And I kept referencing Last of the Mohicans, kept yelling that out: 'I will find you!' [Laughs] Did ever detect a certain vibe between Tuello and Serena? Hit the comments with your thoughts! Chicago P.D. Boss Talks Finale Death, Voight and Chapman's ‘Breakup,' and #Burzek Wedding's Lack of Vows
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale. Proceed at your own risk! What's a wedding without some tears? But the waterworks at Burgess and Ruzek's nuptials during Wednesday's Chicago P.D. season finale weren't the kind that you want to see. More from TVLine Chicago Fire EP on Finale's #Stellaride Twist, Violet and Carver's Uncertain Future, and Firehouse Shake-Up Chicago Med Boss Talks Finale's Bait-and-Switch Baby Daddy Cliffhanger and [Spoiler]'s Surprise Return Survivor 48 Finale Recap: And the Winner Is... After Reid announced on the news that Intelligence operations were suspended and its officers were either stripped of their police powers or reassigned to patrol, the unit set about to taking down the dirty deputy chief on the downlow. Alas, all their leads led to a dead end, literally — the only person who could corroborate Reid's shady deeds was killed as Voight was bringing him in — leaving Voight to take desperate measures. Chapman begged Voight not to do something that both of them couldn't turn back from, but when Reid was shot and killed by Otero's son, it was clear that Voight hadn't taken her words to heart. Otero's son wanted to go home, and Voight had no legal right to hold him in a safe house, Voight told the team, adding that the kid was calm. And now that the truth was out about Reid, Voight surmised that the investigation into Intelligence will disappear. Chapman saw through Voight's explanation and confronted him at Burgess and Ruzek's wedding about how he told Silva what to say about Reid in exchange for immunity and his brother's release. He also told Otero's son how his dad died and gave him Reid's location, sanctioning his death, Chapman argued. 'It's not who you are. I know you. You told me you believed there could be more,' an emotional Chapman said, to which Voight flatly replied, 'I don't get more.' As a beaming Burgess walked down the aisle to her smiling groom and the couple finally got hitched, Chapman couldn't help shedding some tears for herself and Voight. Below, showrunner Gwen Sigan breaks down Voight's actions and what they mean for his relationship with Chapman. The EP also talks about the challenges of fitting #Burzek's wedding into the dramatic finale and why viewers didn't hear the pair's vows. TVLINE | The last thing Reid says to Voight before he dies is, 'You're worse than me.' How much is Voight taking that to heart? How true are those words? The thing about Voight [is] he's not a man that necessarily overthinks or self-reflects or is very adept at processing emotion in the way most people would. So in that moment when it happened, I don't think he took it in completely. But I think those words are going to be living in his subconscious for a while. And so, I think it will constantly replay itself in interesting ways to come. TVLINE | He's a character who's always walked that thin line and done very questionable things. To paraphrase Chapman, has he truly crossed a line he can't come back from here? That's the question that the audience is left with. It's the question that Voight is kind of left with. We'll see. We'll see where he goes from here. I think he thinks in his head, at this point in time, that what he did was worth what he gained from it and was worth the cost, too. But that's an easy thing to say in the moment, and then six months later, [he] might not feel the same. So it leaves us with this great continuing question to keep playing with. Like you said, he has this capacity — and it's not the best capacity — that he can go to these dark places, and he can make these choices, but can he always live with them? TVLINE | Him telling Chapman, 'I don't get more,' is really interesting. What does he mean by that? When we wrote that line, to me, it was really like he's saying, 'I can't have it. I can't have more,' and in my mind, that's a little bit like, 'I don't know how to do it. I don't have the capacity for it,' and also him realizing that it would be too much cost for whoever is with him. Like, it would just not be good because he's not built for it. It would be dragging somebody into the dirt with him. So I think he thinks he's kind of being noble in that moment. There's a lot of different ways that I sort of saw that and then to see how Jason [Beghe] played it was really interesting because I think he kind of saw it in the same way like, 'I don't know how to do it. I can't have it.' TVLINE | What Voight does in this episode, how does that change how Chapman feels about him?Chapman can't abide by it. It's the line he crossed, morally and ethically, that is something that she can't stand by. That's where she's drawing the line. And also, the entire episode, she was basically trying to convince him not to go to this place that he went to, right? Like, she was the angel on his shoulder, basically, pulling him out, and even from that first scene they had together in the teaser, basically telling him, 'You cannot shut me out. I'm going to help you,' and he just refuses to let her. And so, by the end of it, she's realizing that any other hope of anything else is not going to happen. So in my mind, it's almost like a breakup for Chapman, and it's this big sad moment for her. TVLINE | Chapman, clearly, is aware of what Voight has done. Are the others picking up on what he did, the strings he pulled and what he set into motion? It's this great thing where we see in that final scene a lot of unease on each of their faces, and it was an interesting thing to shoot, because, obviously, these actors know their characters so well. So some of them were like, 'Yeah, no, I put it together.' I think it's going to be a question of how much do each of them know, how much do each of them want to know? Are they going to turn the other cheek and not try to dig into it? Are they going to dig into it and find nothing? Do they believe that this all just worked itself out? I think each one of them is going to handle it a little bit differently, and we saw the start of that in that scene of them each realizing, 'This doesn't feel quite right, does it?' TVLINE | The other big event in this episode was the long-awaited Burgess and Ruzek wedding. What was your goal with these nuptials and fitting them into this finale? It was difficult to fit it in. We knew we had these two completely different sort of elements that we wanted to put into the finale, which are these high stakes for Voight, and this really sort of emotional journey for Voight and Chapman and Reid, and then also this long-awaited happiness, this long-awaited almost cathartic wedding for Ruzek and Burgess. And so, it became how do we fit those two things together in a way that feels like our show and doesn't feel almost like we're stopping the show to go and show a wedding? So I think we managed it, in my mind, in a really nice way where it still feels like the tone is our show, but we get to see Ruzek and Burgess have exactly what they would want. But we also are still with some of our other characters during it and seeing their POV and seeing how they're feeling. And so, there's this nice juxtaposition, which causes this very bittersweet tone through that last scene, which I really liked. Chicago P.D. Wedding First Look: Burgess and Ruzek Finally Tie the Knot View List TVLINE | There were a couple of things that I was maybe expecting to see in the wedding that I didn't. LaRoyce Hawkins told me , but I guess he didn't get that, and I thought that Voight might walk her down the aisle. Was that ever a consideration? We thought about who would walk her down. Voight was an option, and in the lore, she does have a father. So that was definitely an option. I liked Burgess walking down by herself. I thought it was kind of symbolic, and I also thought it was just like a very Burgess kind of independent, nice moment for her. So that was what we ended up settling on. TVLINE | Was there ever any thought or conversation about whether we should hear them actually exchange vows?We did. We talked about it a lot. We considered it. Again, it just became about there's so many different strings, so many different elements, and to me, when we sort of attempted that and thought of it in our minds, it took things into a much more sentimental sweet, almost too sweet sort of tone. So that's why we chose to sort of juxtapose it more with the conversation between Chapman and Voight. fans, what did you think of the finale and #Burzek's wedding? A Handmaid's Tale Casualty Breaks Down the ‘Slightly Telepathic' Moment Right Before [Spoiler]'s Death
The Handmaid's Tale One of the most enigmatic — and frustrating — characters in The Handmaid's Tale met his end in this week's episode. More from TVLine Save the Dates: Sterling K. Brown's Washington Black Premiere, New Dora Movie and More The Handmaid's Tale Kills Three Major Characters in Last Episode Before Series Finale - Read Recap The Bear Season 4 Trailer Reveals Fallout After Carmy and Syd Receive Damning Restaurant Review Nick Blaine was killed when his plane blew up, courtesy of a bomb that High Commander Lawrence placed in order to kill a bunch of Gilead leaders. A shocked June watched as the explosion, which also ended the lives of Lawrence and High Commander Wharton, lit up the skies over Boston. (Read a full episode recap here.) Nick, played by Max Minghella, started the series as the Waterfords' driver but ascended to commander over the course of six seasons. His relationship with Elisabeth Moss' June was a complicated matter that involved fathering one of her children, assisting her efforts to escape from/bring down Gilead and then betraying her at a crucial point in the rebellion. When I spoke with Minghella about that relationship-ending duplicity earlier this season, we also discussed Nick's final moments. And now that his alter ego has been killed on-screen, I'm able to share. Read on for Minghella's thoughts on his last scenes in the series, which will come to its conclusion next week. TVLINE | In Episode 9, Nick is getting on the plane, and he pauses, but he does not see June hiding in the hangar. Did you guys shoot a version where they make eye contact?MAX MINGHELLA | No, we we didn't. But it's definitely supposed to be a moment of, like sort of a slightly telepathic moment. There's a word — I'm not smart enough to know what the word is. [Laughs] But human beings can actually sense when they're being watched, like we actually do sort of have eyes in the back of our heads. So I think that's all it is. It's a sense, a presence. I thought it was a really interesting idea from Lizzie (Moss, who directed the episode) to do that. TVLINE | When did you know that Nick wasn't going to make it out of the series alive?Well, you know what? Normally on The Handmaid's Tale, I don't have any idea what's going to happen episode to episode. I've always been quite happy to be blind to it and go with the flow. This year, I happened to work on a project with Lizzie in between seasons. [Editor's note: The project was Shell, a comedic horror film that Minghella directed and in which Moss starred.] So we were together a lot, and just from hanging out, I ended up hearing a lot of it. So this year, I did sort of know quite a lot of the arc of the character. But it was just circumstantial — it wasn't for any other reason. TVLINE | No spoilers here, but before the series ends, a character tells June that Nick would've chosen her if he ever had a choice. I'm interested in what you think of relationship to June is the only sunshine in his life, and it's his motive for everything. And so, I think that's absolutely right. Got thoughts on Nick's death? Survivor's [Spoiler] Explains Big Reward Decision and Endgame Plans: ‘I Thought I Could Beat Everybody'
48 Viewers were hungry for a big move and in Episode 12, secret island besties Kyle and Kamilla finally struck big. More from TVLine Criminal Minds Star Breaks Down That 'Seminal' Moment for Series, How the Devastating Twist Will Affect [Spoiler] Survivor Recap: Kyle and Kamilla Line Up a Risky Frame Job - But Did It Work? The Rookie Trio Ponders Tim's Next Move ('He's Whipped!'), Fights Over Season 7 Highlights - WATCH After Joe secured his fourth immunity win, the two Ks hatched a devious plan of trying to convince Joe that Shauhin was flipping. Kyle and Kamilla doubled down on their ruse by whipping up a bold-faced lie: that Shauhin showed Kamilla an immunity idol that didn't even exist! All of this 'information' was enough to put seeds of doubt in Joe's head, and not even the world's most awkward conversation between Joe and Shauhin was able to clear up the confusion and trust between them. When the final votes came in, Joe and Eva believed the story they'd been fed, and Shauhin's game came to an abrupt end. (Read a full recap here.) Below, Shauhin details his feelings about Kyle and Kamilla's move, that tense conversation he had with Joe and why he chose to feed the game's most obvious frontrunner. TVLINE | Man, you got got! How did it feel watching all that back on TV?SHAUHIN DAVARI | Oh, the feeling was crazy because my friends and family didn't know, and so they were going into it thinking that [I] could win this thing like, 'You've played a great game and there's a lot of game left to be played. You definitely could win this thing,' and so they had a lot of confidence for me. 'You haven't won a challenge yet, and we know you can win challenges.' So they thought like, 'OK, maybe this is the time he wins the challenge,' and they were right. I did win a challenge. I just won the wrong one. But the feeling last night was awesome. I was surrounded by my community and we come together every Wednesday night. We have since Season 43. So to go from us just getting together and watching the show and enjoying it and playing Survivor fantasy to now all of a sudden, they're rooting for me and cheering for me and jeering for me and they got to have 12 episodes of that. For it to all come to a close last night, it was a really beautiful night. TVLINE | What's your reaction to Kyle and Kamilla's frame job? Any thoughts or hard feelings about how it all went down?Yeah, how dare they? My mom right now is putting hexes on their future children. [Laughs] No, man, I mean, it's a game, and you see that right after I get voted out as I recognize, 'OK, it must have taken a gargantuan effort to get me out because Joe and Eva and I were very close. Some of the things you might not see is that Joe, Eva and I were a very tight three as well. Joe and I spent every single day on the beach together. We woke up and had midnight conversations all the time about the game. You don't see any of that stuff, and I certainly understand the duo that is Joe and Eva, like obviously, the hug heard around the world and this incredible, maybe best TV moment that I've ever seen, and I got to see it in person. I wasn't unaware that they were a very tight duo, but Joe and I also had a very good relationship out there, something that you didn't really see. He was The Rock and I was Kevin Hart. We had so much fun together out there. So in order to convince them, that move had to be big and I knew that it had to be big right when it was happening. Also, I felt like I was playing the best game out there, so it made sense for them to get the person that they maybe figured out was playing the best game, or they were scared that I was playing the best game or whatever. At that point, you gotta have respect. If you know the game and you love the game and you thought you were gonna win the game, well, if you get got before you get to the end, you gotta pay respect to the people who got you. TVLINE | You had this tense conversation with Joe where he was kinda, sorta trying to suss you out. What was your take on that in the moment? Is there anything else you wish you would have said or done?I wish that I was gentler. I was not gentle in that conversation and I could have been, and I normally would have been, but I think after 23 days of not eating very much and not sleeping very well and all the discomfort out there, I was not as gentle as I could have been, especially knowing that he had just had a conversation with his sister which he had been waiting to have for the better part of a decade, and he had just come back from loved one's letters where his kids really got him into an emotional state that was powerful enough for him to share the story of his sister or to close the chapter of that story with his sister. And I didn't recognize that because I felt maybe that he should feel a little indebted to me because I took him on that reward, and so I kind of reacted in a way, and he kind of reacted in a way because of where he was at emotionally. We were just on an off day. And in that off day, Kyle and Kamilla come in with their claws and just hook that dude, right? They hook him and they hook Eva and it's a perfect storm inside. The ship of me, Joe and Eva, we just didn't make it out the other side. Or at least they did. I didn't make it out the other side. Man overboard. TVLINE | Viewers seemed surprised that you picked Joe to go on the reward, especially since the food was such a huge component to immunity challenge performance. Why'd you let him eat? Were you OK to sit in a Final 3 with him and Eva?A couple things here. Number one, as far as the Joe thing is concerned, you gotta remember that for the last maybe five days, we're talking about when the loved ones letters are gonna come, and every single person on that beach was like, 'Well, I'm for sure picking Joe because you want to see the loved ones letters from your kids,' and he was the last person with a kid out there. So the narrative of like, 'Why did you pick Joe?' I don't know that I buy that. I think most people would have picked Joe, except for maybe Mitch. Maybe Kamilla wouldn't have picked Joe either, but he's the only one who had kids left, so I felt OK about that decision. Fueling him, I understand why that would upset the people that were left in the game, but I don't know. I don't know that I buy that most people would not have picked him in that scenario. As far as sitting next to him in the end, I mean, if you look at the relationships that I had built versus the relationships that he had built, I think that I have a pretty good argument as to why I would win at the end. If you look at the perception of him versus my perception and what was stated out there… like Star says, 'Shauhin is the brain.' Well, in the game of Survivor, the brain tends to win the game and the brain tends to be able to explain what's going on in the game. I teach speech and debate for a living. Doing public speaking and presenting persuasive arguments is all I do all day long, and I also build relationships, right? Interpersonal communication is also something that I teach. And so building these strong connections and asking yourself, 'The people that left. Did they think that they had a relationship with me?' Even Mitch says it in this episode that he felt like he could come make a move with me. He felt like he had been waiting to make this move with me at six. Now, for me, what's the point of making the move if I think I can beat the people that I'm already working with? Now, to be frank, I thought I could beat everybody. I didn't go out there to play a game that I didn't think was a winning game. I wanted to win. I didn't want to do anything else. My only goal was to go win the game and I came up short, obviously, but I certainly think that if I made it to the end, at that point, I didn't care who I sat next to, whether it was Joe, Eva, Mitch, Kamilla, Kyle. I thought that I could make a persuasive argument that would win me the game, and I think given the people that were already over on the jury, I had a really good shot. TVLINE | What was your reunion with David like when you hit Ponderosa?I got a really warm welcome when I came to Ponderosa, and the people on the jury said to me, 'You were our million-dollar pick. We were all going to vote for you.' Every single person said that to me. Now, they could have just been gassing me up because I was coming out of the game and I was sad. That's possible, but I think even after that, the conversations that we had let me know, 'OK, cool, I had played a really excellent game,' and I think you even see in some of the exit press that's already happened that they would have voted for me if I had made the end. I think the reason why David and I had a good relationship is because I never said that I was going to do this honor and integrity thing. I said that I was going to play the game, and when they would start talking about that with me there, I would kind of just fall silent and not say anything. I've watched a bunch of Survivor and I know that that's just not how it works. That's how you make people mad. You make people mad by saying you're gonna do that and then not doing that, as opposed to what I did, which was search someone's bag, and then when we got to the merge beach, I literally told everybody. I said to every single person in this big round circle that we're all sitting in when Eva says I have autism. I talked about how I searched Kyle's bag because it's the game of Survivor and I was doing everything I could to protect my alliance and that's the truth. I wanted to protect Thomas, I wanted to protect Joe, I wanted to protect myself. I was doing anything I could to protect them, and so I think that David respected that type of lying honesty, if you will. TVLINE | You did search Kyle's bag, but maybe not well enough, right?I needed this. [Lifts up a handheld metal detector that reads 'SECURITY.'] TVLINE | What didn't we see on TV that you wish was shown?Something about my game was the close-knit relationships that I had out there. You didn't see me really talk to Kamilla, but Kamilla and I were working together, as David was concerned about, right? Kyle and I obviously worked together on a bunch of votes. Switching it from Kamilla to Chrissy, that was a Kyle and me move. The David thing was Kyle, me and Joe. The relationship that I had and the closeness that I had with Joe is definitely something that was missing from the edit. Joe and I were together on a beach every single day except for the split Tribal, and that's not the case with Joe and Eva. Now, Joe and Eva had a tighter bond based on other things, but Joe and I were incredibly tight out there for sure. I love that guy. TVLINE | Were you ever worried that if Joe was forced to pick between you and Eva, that he'd pick her?[Long silence] Oh, wow. You know, I think that he probably would have picked her. I didn't want to ever make him choose. I knew better than to make him choose. He was put in a really difficult position out there with Eva, not that he didn't want to be that for Eva, but that is a difficult position for a man who has the background he has, the history he has, the life he has, the family he has. That's a difficult position to be put in, to be put between his brother from another mother, the Kevin Hart to his Rock, and Eva. That is a difficult spot to be in for sure. Law & Order: Organized Crime's Danielle Moné Truitt Teases a ‘Come to Jesus Moment' Is On the Way for Someone in Bell's Squad Room
Don't come into Sgt. Ayanna Bell's squad room without knowing exactly who's in charge. That's the lesson that FBI Agent Bruce Sheppard (played by Ozark's McKinley Belcher III) is on track to learn as the drama continues its Season 5 run (new episodes drop Thursdays on Peacock). Viewers will remember that Sheppard showed up in the season premiere, when his investigation of a deadly biker gang intersected with the Organized Crime Control Bureau's pursuit of a dirty trucking company. Downs on [Spoiler]'s Sage Advice for Deborah, Why Ava Is Her 'Dumbo's Feather' And while Danielle Moné Truitt has been clear about her desire for her character to be a bit more relaxed this season — 'I'm tired of Bell having to be everybody's mom,' she tells TVLine. 'This is a specialized taskforce, which means everybody who is a part of this task force is the best at what they do.' — don't think that means she won't make sure the new guy fall in line as needed when he's back in future episodes. Read on to hear Truitt's thoughts about what's ahead in the new season, and for context, know that this chat took place before Jet's exit from Bell's task force. TVLINE | Right from the beginning of the season, we have the FBI messing with the OCCB. Agent Sheppard comes in hot, and Bell really pulls for her team. What can you tell me about the FBI's involvement in this season? Is Sheppard around a lot?DANIELLE MONÉ TRUITT | He's around for a portion of the season… It's always an interesting dynamic when you are having to work with another part of the justice system, and they have a way that they want to do things, and everybody wants to assert their authority. And I think because Bell is a woman, and a Black woman, I think that there is sometimes just a lack of respect that people have for her. They'll try to come in and assert their way because they're men, or sometimes because they're white. TVLINE | like, 'OK, it's really cute that you have this little team, but you know we're the FBI.' And this is a Black man… but he's a man, and I think just having Bell be a woman, there is automatically [his having] this idea of, 'Hey, I know what I'm doing. I've been chasing these people for a while. Let me come in and take over.' I think it is a realistic thing that she's always having to let people know and put people on notice like, 'Hey, I've got this. You're working with us. You came to us. So don't start questioning what we're doing. You're the person that needs help.' [Laughs] There's a few times that she has to check him until he realizes who she is. TVLINE | And, as we learn, he messed things up the first time they tried to go for the gang!Exactly! And our team is solid. You guys will see in later episodes there's a little, I call it a 'come to Jesus moment.' He has a little come to Jesus moment, a little moment of where he has to be humbled, you know? People have no choice but to respect Bell because she does her job well, she manages her team well. When she gets into situations where she doesn't know what she's doing, or maybe made the wrong call or whatever, she takes accountability. So everybody ends up having to respect her at the end of the day. TVLINE | I love it. Also: Because I'm 5 years old, I was super into it when you guys started swearing on the show.[Laughs] That's it, girl. I love it. TVLINE | Talk to me about how much Bell swears this always swearing, even when there was no swearing allowed, she's swearing in here. [Points to head] She's like, 'You dumb mother–ker.' [Laughs] She's saying all the things. …We all were so excited. I mean, Rick [Gonzalez], when I tell you Rick chose to curse every chance he got. [Laughs] I would be cracking up. I mean, every chance he got, he was like 'F–k!' It goes with his character, though. TVLINE | Amazing.I'm like, 'This is awesome.'
