Judge halts lithium battery storage facility near Canton

CANTON, Texas (KETK) – The district court judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Finland-based company Taaleri Energia currently building a lithium battery storage facility just west of Canton. Van Zandt County Fire Marshal orders battery facility to meet fire codes or face consequences The Amador project was first announced in November 2024 and ever since then community members have been fighting against the development. 'If they meet all the demands, then that's one step closer to knowing we might be safe, but right now, there's a large fear,' community member, Nancy White said. Safety is a concern and reason behind the efforts to prevent the project from moving forward. 'I just don't have the confidence and the security,' White said. 'So, for now, I'm going to say that I'd rather than wait till the technology is ready and it's not.' Multiple community members cited potential threats to both soil and air quality as well as lack of resources for local first responders to handle potential emergencies like a lithium battery fire. The temporary restraining order lasts 14 days and means the company can't move any lithium batteries onto the construction site, or within Van Zandt County. Van Zandt County seeks Trump's support for unwanted foreign-owned lithium battery storage 'In our in our petition, we set out for the court some of our primary concerns,' Van Zandt County District Attorney Tonda Curry said. 'Those regarding the battery testing, the module testing, the container testing, as well as their hazard mitigation plan.' They're also concerned about the emergency operation plan and water access at the site. 'If you are going to come here, your system is going to have to be as safe as it can be,' Curry said. 'And that means it has to meet these National Fire Protection Association standards.' The Finland-based company said in a statement they are working to comply with state regulations for project Amador and said they are actively working with the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal to provide documentation. Curry said if the company doesn't meet the state regulations before the deadline they could proceed with a more permanent injunction. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Van Zandt Co. Fire Marshal orders battery facility to meet fire codes or face consequences

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – A 43-acre battery energy storage facility started construction in December, but soon, that work could be brought to a halt. Van Zandt County residents file lawsuit over threat posed by lithium battery storage facility The Van Zandt County Fire Marshal has issued an order to Taaleri Energia, the company behind the Amador Energy Storage project, to follow all state fire codes or face the consequences. 'Well, that just tells us what we've kind of already come to know,' Van Zandt County Resident Shane Lane said. Shane Lane's ranch borders the land the battery facility is being built on, and he is currently suing the Finnish-owned company over safety concerns. 'We run a cow calf operation and they don't have any type of evacuation, they don't have any plans for anything, there's no safety protocol whatsoever for this facility,' Lane said. Van Zandt County seeks Trump's support for unwanted foreign-owned lithium battery storage Before construction started at the end of December, the county sent Taaleri Energia a letter requesting the documents required for the facility to be built, but they didn't receive a response until February. 'I find that very interesting that a that a foreign-owned entity can come in here with a $90 million project and can't do something as little as turn in a few documents on time,' Lane said. Some documents were sent back, but after reviewing them, the new fire marshal, Kevin Palmer, said they didn't meet the requirements. 'It's not because I didn't like them. It's really because they failed some test or because they weren't up to standard,' Palmer said. This led to the fire marshal requesting new documentation. Palmer said he feels the company didn't see a reason to be quick about it turning in the documents. So he issued an order to have everything submitted by April 7 and added a condition. 'Under no circumstances may any of the batteries enter Van Zandt County until all requirements have been met,' Palmer said. 'We've run out of space': Van Zandt Co. leaders plan to move out of old courthouse Taaleri Energia now has two weeks to get all required forms, surveys and safety plans to the fire marshal's office, or there will be a penalty. 'When a fire marshal issues you an order, if you fail to comply with that order, it's actually a Class B misdemeanor until after the second conviction, and then becomes a state jail felony,' Palmer said. Palmer added that the Van Zandt County District Attorney can also file a temporary injunction to halt all construction. 'It's time to let them know that foreign entities are not welcome in this county to build a project of that scale,' Lane said. KETK reached out to Taaleri Energia for a comment on the requirements but they haven't responded as of Thursday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Eltel wins $75.8m Finnish solar power plant contract

Eltel has been awarded a contract worth €73.5m ($75.8m) by Taaleri Energia to construct the Hallanvahti solar power plant in Joroinen, Finland. With a capacity of 129 megawatts peak (MWp), the Hallanvahti plant is set to become the country's second-largest solar power plant upon completion. The project has now reached ready-to-build status and construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with full operations by mid-2026. The Hallanvahti solar park is being developed under a turnkey contract, covering the construction of the solar park, transformer station and grid connection, and ongoing operation and maintenance. With an estimated annual production of 140 gigawatt hours, the solar farm will supply green electricity to 18,000 households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 29,300 tonnes annually At the end of 2024, Eltel signed a conditional engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Taaleri Energia. This strengthens Eltel's position as an infrastructure service provider in the renewable energy sector during the ongoing energy transition. In September 2024, Taaleri Energia, in partnership with Masdar, secured financing for the Čibuk 2 wind farm in Serbia. The project, expected to power 62,000 households, has secured a €144m debt facility. The financing was provided by commercial lenders UniCredit and Erste (Erste Group and Erste Bank Serbia). The wind farm is being developed through Masdar Taaleri Generation, a joint venture between Masdar and Taaleri Energia, in collaboration with Serbian developer New Energy Solutions. In October 2024, OX2 entered an asset management agreement with Nuveen Infrastructure to oversee Finland's Piiparinmaki wind farm, which began commercial production in the summer of 2022. OX2 was tasked with the facility's technical, commercial and financial operations to optimise performance.
