Seattle Kraken helps Harts Plumbers, Electricians and HVAC Technicians raise nearly $13K for Seattle Children's Hospital
The Tacoma-based home service company says that giving back to the community is its mission and encourages others to donate to the hospital's uncompensated care fund TACOMA, Wash., May 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Harts Plumbers, Electricians and HVAC Technicians, a Tacoma-area top-rated home services provider founded in 2013, is pleased to announce it has raised nearly $13,000 for Seattle Children's Hospital Uncompensated Care Fund through a collaboration with the Seattle Kraken, a professional National Hockey League team, and iHeartRadio, a division of iHeartMedia Inc. "We are honored that we can provide this donation to ensure that families whose children need the hospital's services can focus on caring for their loved ones instead of worrying about the costs of care," said Dan Hartsough, co-owner of Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians. "At Harts, it's our priority to give back to the community. By spotlighting a popular sports team in our donation efforts, we are also able to increase awareness about the Uncompensated Care Fund and its goal to care for this area's children regardless of their families' ability to pay." As part of the collaboration, Harts donates $50 for every goal scored by the Kraken. During the 2024-25 season, the Kraken scored 253 goals, resulting in a total donation of $12,650. In 2024, Seattle Children's Hospital provided $310.6 million in uncompensated care. The Uncompensated Care Fund allows the hospital to recover some of those costs through private donations. In addition to its fundraising efforts with the Kraken, Harts has also developed an independent $50/$50 offer to encourage its customers to join them in supporting Seattle Children's Hospital. When a customer donates a minimum of $50 to the fund during a service call, they receive a $50 discount on that day's services. "This encourages our customers to donate all year long," Hartsough said. "We enjoy working with the community to help families get the care or services they need. Opportunities like this help us create a bond with the community we serve." Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians provides residential plumbing services, top-notch electrical services, and outstanding heating and cooling services throughout the greater Seattle, Tacoma and now Tukwila areas. ‘Dine out for life' today at 18 Tacoma-area restaurants, bars
A longstanding diner, a Vietnamese dessert spot, several cafes and a few of the city's best restaurants are among 18 Tacoma-area businesses participating in this year's Dining Out for Life, an annual nationwide fundraiser that supports local HIV service organizations. On Thursday, April 24, South Sound participants will donate a portion of their sales to Affordable Housing and Treatment Homecare (AHAT). The nonprofit has helped people living with HIV/AIDS access affordable healthcare and housing, expanding their services to also assist those with Hepatitis C in 2016. The biggest percentage will come from The Mix, the beloved queer bar with nightly karaoke near downtown Tacoma, which will donate 75% of all sales on Thursday to AHAT. The Powder Room Champagne Bar, open for lunch and dinner in the Stadium District, will donate 25%. Most of the other local spots will send 10% of sales, with a couple offering an undisclosed fixed amount. In Tacoma, participating businesses include: ▪ Lincoln District: Bambu ▪ McKinley: Dusty's Hideaway, Tami's in Tacoma ▪ Dome District: Alfred's Cafe ▪ Downtown: Wooden City, Chez Lafayette Creole Brasserie, en Rama, Fusion Donut Cafe & Cocktail Lounge, Soulberry Coffee House ▪ St. Helens/Stadium: The Mix, Structure Cellars, The Powder Room ▪ Hilltop: Red Elm Cafe, Three Hearts ▪ Sixth Ave: Primo Grill In Puyallup, Bourbon Street Creole Kitchen and The Coaster will support the cause. More 2,400 restaurants are expected to participate in at least 22 states on Thursday, sending funds to 50-some service local organizations. Past events have raised $4.5 million, according to the event page. In each city, donations from participating restaurants are sent exclusively to the local partner. 'Dining Out for Life is a fun, easy way for the community to give back,' said AHAT executive director Chace Hunter in a press release. The nonprofit serves 'some of our most vulnerable populations,' he added. 'In a time when funding for HIV care and housing is being slashed from administrative budgets, we rely on that support more than ever.' Around 15,000 people have been diagnosed with HIV in Washington, according to the state Department of Health's 2024 report, with most living in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. More than 1.2 million are living with HIV nationwide, per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another 32 restaurants in Seattle will also send a portion of sales on April 24 to Lifelong, a nonprofit that supports vulnerable populations, including those living with HIV, kidney disease and diabetes. Tacoma's biscotti maven bids farewell after 13 years, says it's ‘been an awesome ride'
The Art of Crunch, which supplied Tacoma-area coffee shops and restaurants with homemade biscotti, brownies, bars, crackers and more, has closed after 13 years. Owner Rhonda Hamlin delivered her last batch of goodies to customers, including Curran Coffee in Old Town and Two Fox Winery in Lakebay, this week. They wanted to stock up, she said, and that commitment 'means so much, because you know it's just supporting each other locally.' Informing her wholesale clients was, she added, one of the most challenging parts of shutting down the business she started as a single mom to two now-grown kids in 2012. It also elongated the process of shutting down, as she began thinking about it seriously last fall. 'I'd get frustrated and tried to think of what in the world I would even want to do,' she reflected in a phone call with The News Tribune. Outside of juggling prior jobs through the first couple of years, she was baking full-time by 2014, growing to employ four people. After struggling to find the right space to have her own brick-and-mortar with an equipped commercial kitchen, she found The Gourmet Niche at 7104 6th Ave., a commissary owned by chef and caterer Bette Anne Curry. 'That part has been great,' said Hamlin, noting its flexibility, cost, mentorship and access to advice from fellow food entrepreneurs. She went into business after perfecting a biscotti recipe that, years prior, earned her a blue-ribbon in a baking contest at the Washington State Fair. The winner: cranberry biscotti dipped in white chocolate. Flavors have touched on the likes of lavender-caramel, ginger-lemon and tiramisu, according to a 2017 feature in The News Tribune. At the time, she had a tent at the Proctor Farmers Market, too. She also made specialties hard to find locally such as Nanaimo bars, a Canadian chocolate and custard wafer of sorts. Lately, other vendors have included Coffeezaun on Pearl in the North End, Wide Awake Cafe (which recently opened a third location on Ruston Way), Delightful Neighborhood Market, Happy Belly and Sandwich Starr. As the pandemic impacted her clients, she tried her hand at her own retail storefront at The Gourmet Niche, with a boost from neighbor Wildside Wine. That helped alleviate some of the residual financial struggles, but she was careful not to undercut her loyal clients and hesitated to raise prices. They were already paying a premium to support a small brand over a processed good from Costco or other commercial suppliers, she noted. 'It's hard being a small wholesaler,' she explained, adding that the profit margin is smaller than selling direct-to-consumer. 'I didn't have the cash flow to buy a lot in bulk nor anywhere to store it. I go all over the place for certain things.' She felt OK coming out of 2020 and 2021, but lately, everything was just adding up — or rather, not so much. 'It just wasn't enough,' she continued. 'The cost of ingredients and minimum wage, taxes, licensing — you just name it, everything's going up.' What was for more than a decade a way to make a living felt increasingly impractical, she said, especially as she headed into her early 60s. 'I just got tired of fighting it, that's all,' Hamlin said. Before starting The Art of Crunch, she worked at Nordstrom and will, in a sense, return to retail — this time at Metropolitan Market. Serving Tacoma for 13 years has 'been an awesome ride,' she said, but she hopes locals take a closer look at the small businesses that surround them. 'There are so many hats to wear behind the scenes,' she said. 'I just think it would challenge people to really pay attention to small businesses you really like but maybe don't go to a lot. I've had people come to me and say, 'Oh my gosh, I should have come to you more often.' That little place over there? You need more people to go that place instead of Walmart or Target or whatever. Just a few extra pennies at the small place would certainly help a lot.'

Mount Rainier-inspired beer on tap after new owner buys Gig Harbor's namesake brewery
Gig Harbor Brewing is now Evergreen State Brewing, following a February sale that has ushered in a Pacific Northwest-themed rebrand and new beer recipes to two Tacoma-area taprooms. 'We are thrilled to have this incredible opportunity to join the NW brewing community, and we look forward to serving the passionate craft beer drinkers throughout the region,' new brewery owner Matthew Burnett said in a news release. Burnett bought both of the brewery's taprooms in Tacoma and Gig Harbor from founder John Fosberg. The sale closed Feb. 1, Burnett told The News Tribune in a phone call. Gig Harbor Brewing opened its craft brewery and taproom at 3120 S. Tacoma Way in 2015 after the business struggled to find production space in its namesake town, The News Tribune reported at the time. They secured a second taproom on the waterfront in downtown Gig Harbor by 2018. In 2021, Fosberg and his son, Max Fosberg, added a spinoff, Home Turf Taproom, in Parkland, but it closed two years later. (It's now La Ca Cafe.) They listed the brewery for sale last June. 'I always wanted to own a brewery,' Burnett said. 'I used to do a lot of homebrewing ... the price was good, so I went ahead and moved on it. ' A self-described lover of 'good craft beer,' he said he was raised in Tacoma and considers the city his home. Evergreen State Brewing will introduce a full rebrand, including new beer recipes — though Burnett said Gig Harbor Brewing's menu won't disappear entirely. He will keep Dead Man's Island IPA on the menu and plans to recreate some of his predecessor's recipes as specials a few times a year. Burnett is excited about the grain, yeast and hops that they'll use in their new recipes. Asked what makes a good beer, he answered immediately: 'A brew master and quality ingredients.' 'You can tell by the price of your ingredients,' he said. 'There's cheaper ones out there, and we tend to pay for the higher end.' Evergreen State Brewing names their beers after Washington state icons and themes, according to Burnett. He highlighted the 29 Tribes Red Ale and Harry Henderson Brown Ale as taste-tester favorites. The High Point Blonde Ale, 'a bold, crisp new blond ale that is sure to be a crowd fave' per the brewery's social media, is inspired by Mount Rainier. The brewery will host a grand opening at the Tacoma taproom March 21-22 and at their Gig Harbor taproom March 28-29. The Tacoma outpost is family-friendly, while the Gig Harbor taproom is 21-and-up. Burnett has eyes on opening other taprooms in Washington state. His next destination is Chelan, where he said he aims to introduce the brand next January. ▪ 3120 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma, 253-319, 8181, ▪ 3155 Harborview Dr., Gig Harbor ▪ Details: new owners for Gig Harbor-Tacoma brewery, follow for updates ▪ Grand opening party and beer tasting in Tacoma, March 21-22, 2-11 p.m., and in Gig Harbor, March 28-29, 2-11 p.m. The News Tribune's Kristine Sherred contributed to this report.
