Iraq, France's AFD partner on €130m wastewater projects
Baghdad ( – In a move to strengthen sanitation infrastructure and improve public health in underserved regions, Iraq has signed two major financing agreements with France's Agence Française de Développement (AFD), totaling €130 million. Iraqi Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed signed the two agreements on Tuesday, in the presence of the French ambassador in Baghdad. The funding will support two key wastewater treatment projects. A €110 million package, which includes a €30 million top-up loan, will go toward expanding the Khalidiya sewage system in Al Anbar Governorate. Meanwhile, an additional €100 million has been earmarked for the construction of the Hamza sewer project in Diwaniya Province. These projects aim to boost essential services and living conditions, particularly in low-income areas of Iraq. AFD, active in Iraq since 2011, has so far invested around €600 million in public and commercial development across the country. The latest agreements mark another step in deepening Iraq-France cooperation on infrastructure and sustainable development.

Iraq, IMF wrap up economic talks
Shafaq News/ Iraq's Finance Ministry announced on Sunday the conclusion of discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), focusing on economic performance, financial reforms, and banking sector development. The talks in Amman brought together senior Iraqi officials, including the Governor of the Central Bank (CBI), along with IMF representatives. Discussions covered Iraq's economic outlook, fiscal policies, and financial stability. According to the Finance Ministry, non-oil GDP grew by 5% in 2024, driven by agricultural expansion and increased public spending, with growth expected to continue at 3.5% in 2025. 'The meetings allowed us to assess Iraq's economic trajectory and reinforce our commitment to sustainable growth,' Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed said. An IMF representative acknowledged Iraq's progress in economic diversification but stressed the need for further reforms to ensure long-term stability. The discussions also focused on managing public debt, boosting investor confidence, and strengthening the banking sector to attract foreign capital. Both sides agreed to expand cooperation with foreign correspondent banks, facilitate trade, and promote the use of the Iraqi dinar in major transactions. 'Enhancing the role of the dinar in financial transactions will help stabilize the economy and reinforce confidence in the national currency,' the Central Bank Governor said. Moreover, the IMF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Iraq's financial policies, offering advisory assistance on debt management and tax system improvements. 'We remain dedicated to helping Iraq implement sound economic policies that foster investment and sustainable growth,' the IMF representative added.

MOF stresses the importance of partnership with the World Bank in financing sustainable development programs
Baghdad - INA Minister of Finance Taif Sami stressed, today, Thursday, the importance of partnership with the World Bank in financing programs aimed at achieving sustainable development. The Ministry of Finance said in a statement - received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Minister of Finance Taif Sami Mohammed received the World Bank representative in Iraq, Emmanuel Salinas, in the presence of the Regional Director for Human Development Fadia Saada and the accompanying delegation; to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in supporting development projects and implementing economic reforms." Sami stressed "the importance of partnership with the World Bank in financing programs aimed at achieving sustainable development, and the Iraqi government's commitment to implementing financial and economic reforms to ensure the stability of the national economy," noting that "these reforms aim to enhance sustainable growth, improve the management of financial resources, combat corruption and enhance transparency in government institutions." For his part, the World Bank representative praised the "Iraqi government's efforts to improve the economic environment and enhance transparency and efficiency," stressing "the bank's readiness to provide more technical and financial support in line with Iraq's development priorities." The statement added that "the two parties agreed to continue coordination and joint work to achieve strategic goals and enhance economic stability in the country."

Finance Minister stresses Iraq's keenness to strengthen economic relations with Japan
Baghdad-INA Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed affirmed today, Thursday, Iraq's keenness to consolidate economic relations with Japan. The ministry stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed received today, Thursday, at the ministry's headquarters, the new Japanese ambassador to Iraq, Akira Endo, where the meeting discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation between the two countries in the economic and financial fields," indicating that "this meeting comes within the framework of joint efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation, especially in the financial and investment sectors, in a way that contributes to supporting economic growth in Iraq." The statement added that "the meeting discussed the importance of benefiting from Japanese expertise in supporting development and investment projects inside Iraq, in addition to strengthening financial and trade cooperation mechanisms between Baghdad and Tokyo." Sami stressed, according to the statement, "Iraq's keenness to consolidate economic relations with Japan," praising "the role played by Japanese companies in implementing development projects inside the country." For his part, the Japanese ambassador expressed "his country's readiness to continue supporting Iraq in various fields," noting "the importance of the partnership between the two countries in achieving sustainable development."
