Taste Test: Trying Tajin-covered dates
In celebration of Ramadan in Texas, I grabbed a pack of Tajín Dates at the grocery store — despite my gut reaction to reject the idea.
Why it matters: Tajín is a staple in most Houstonians' diets, especially on fruit, snacks, and drinks. But with dates? I had my doubts.
I also love dates — I've stuffed them with everything from coconut to feta to walnuts (my simple fave). But Tajín? It sounded confusing, and dare I say, bad.
My experience: It was… good? Confusing at first, mostly because I couldn't believe my taste buds were enjoying it.
The Tajín hit first with a pow. Then came the chewy sweetness of the date (but not overpowering). And suddenly, I was eating another. And another.
I can't believe I'm saying this — as a former staunch skeptic — but I liked it.
It brought back the nostalgia of eating tamarind Pulparindo or other Tajín chewy snacks when I was younger.
