Emmerdale's Mary punches disgusting character in public showdown
Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) delivered an absolutely iconic move in tonight's episode of Emmerdale, as she punched a man who had violated April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan). Ever since she returned from a life on the streets, April has struggled. During the six week period she was living rough in Leeds, April barely got by. She slept on the floor in the middle of winter, watched her friend get stabbed, and gave birth to her stillborn baby girl in the toilet of a gym. Reconnecting with her family at home has been tough for April, because none of them know what she went through. Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) found it difficult to find the line between giving April freedom and implementing rules because she's a youngster, resulting in the father and daughter clashing a lot. Yesterday, April left her GCSE exam because she was overwhelmed. She told her dad that she felt unprepared and behind everyone else, and eventually concluded that doing Year 11 again next year would be best. Finishing school early meant April needed a job to keep her busy. Luckily Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) was on hand to offer some work experience at Take a Vow, and it started with April filming a Christening event. To her horror, April discovered the father of the baby was someone she saw while living rough. As the man spoke about family loyalties and his love for his child, she couldn't help but speak up. April revealed to the group that the man found her sleeping under some cardboard boxes. He was drunk with his friend, and suggested that April could earn money as he loosened his belt. More Trending Utterly horrified, Marlon very nearly started a fight with the bloke, but Mary stepped in instead and punched him. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? The man tried to take control of the situation by threatening to report Mary to the police, but she managed to highlight that he really wouldn't have a leg to stand on. As April tried to process the events of the day, Mary was on hand to support her again. She reiterated to April that she went through a life-changing and traumatic ordeal, which was bound to regularly impact her in the aftermath. However, Mary pointed out that with time, April will eventually learn to live with the scars and move forward, and she seemed to agree. Emmerdale's Joe Tate left taken aback as Dawn makes unexpected move
Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) is certainly a woman who knows what she wants in Emmerdale. Recently in the soap, Dawn and Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) discovered that Belle was struggling with handling everything at Take a Vow. The limo crash in February – that Joe was responsible for – saw the deaths of Suzy, Leyla and Amy, and the first two ran the events business with Belle helping out. It left Belle completely on her own, so it's no surprise really that she's finding things tough. Dawn developed an idea after finding this out and told Belle that she should be her business partner. Of course, to buy into Take a Vow, Dawn would need a lot of money, and Belle was adamant the cash could not come from Joe. At Home Farm, Joe put forward the idea of giving Dawn a loan, but she seemed reluctant to accept it and betray Belle. In tonight's episode, Dawn told Belle that she's had a loan accepted from the bank. When Joe found her working later in the day, he reminded her that he could give her the cash interest free, but she didn't want it. Dawn said that she wants to make a success of Take a Vow and her new venture alone, which meant she was more than happy to fill out complicated paperwork for the bank, and pay interest on the loan. Joe was surprised, but also impressed with Dawn's independence. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? As Dawn headed off to a wedding fair, Belle was left alone to organise a christening party at the pub. More Trending She was rushed off her feet, but managed to spy another opportunity when she learnt that April (Amelia Flanagan) needed a job for the summer. April got to work helping Belle, but she was left shocked when she realised the father of the little baby was a man who threatened her while on the streets. View More » How will April cope with this? It's been a long time since he 'exited' the village – actually having been killed by twisted John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) – and nobody suspects the corpse under the lake to be his. In fact, Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) is so convinced that her abusive father Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day) is the one who has been found, and heads to the station to confess. How long will it be before the truth it outed? Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) also suffers a worrying week, as he refuses Tracy Robinson's (Amy Walsh) help in the shop and then takes a nasty fall. After being rushed to hospital, Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) urges him to accept help, as his Parkinson's disease symptoms worsen. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Elsewhere, April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) admits that she's struggling with her GCSEs, and dad Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) is at a loose end with how to support her through her panic attacks. When she lands herself a summer job working at Take a Vow, disaster strikes. She's asked by Belle King (Eden Taylor-Draper) to work on a Christening event, but April recognises the father of the baby – it's none other than the man who attempted to urinate on her while she was homeless. Speaking of Take a Vow – Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) pitches the idea of becoming business partner, but Belle is adamant not to take any handouts from Joe Tate (Ned Porteous). Emmerdale's Belle receives huge news about Tom King
Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) received a letter in the post during tonight's episode of Emmerdale, which confirmed some huge news about her ex Tom King (James Chase). When Tom and Belle got together, it wasn't long until we started to see signs of controlling behaviour from him. At first, Tom's actions were small, but he then became hellbent on isolating Belle from her entire family. Over the next year, Tom was responsible for installing security cameras in the house, tracking Belle's every movement, physically and mentally abusing her, as well as pretending her dog Piper had died in an attempt to get close to her again. Belle eventually reported Tom and he was sent to prison for three years. 'I always knew to some extent Tom was going to lose, because we had always had that conversation', actor James Chase said of the outcome last year. 'Months ago, the producers and I spoke and I agreed with them that Tom had to get his comeuppance. 'So I always knew he was going to. I didn't initially know in what form the justice would take. At one point I thought maybe he'd get killed off but I knew it would be either killed off or sent to prison.' In February of this year, Belle decided she would begin divorce proceedings, but it meant visiting Tom in prison. Fortunately, strong-willed Belle was able to stand up to Tom and ignore his attempts at getting inside her head. Since then, Belle has worked hard on her healing journey, and has even started running Take a Vow in the wake of Leyla and Suzy's deaths. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? In tonight's episode, Belle and her family arrived at Home Farm for Lydia's (Karen Blick) birthday party. She had a letter addressed to her but hid it in her bag, not wanting to draw any attention to herself on someone else's big day. More Trending As time ticked on though and the Dingles became tipsier, Chas (Lucy Pargeter) found the letter and wanted to know what it was. In front of Chas, Mandy (Lisa Riley) and Paddy (Dominic Brunt), Belle revealed that she has got confirmation the divorce process is very nearly over. The trio were thrilled for Belle but she was adamant she didn't want to celebrate on Lydia's birthday. Emmerdale stars reveal why they left soap amid launch of new project
Roxy Shahidi and Matthew Wolfenden became best friends working through Emmerdale (Picture: ITV/Provided/James Melia) Emmerdale's Roxy Shahidi and Matthew Wolfenden have left the comfort of soapland and launched themselves into the presenting and podcast worlds. Roxy's character Leyla Harding was killed during the limo crash in February. It marked the end of her time on the show after 16 years of the Take a Vow business owner. For Roxy's co-star and best mate Matthew Wolfenden, he's had a little longer to adjust to life away from the soap, with his character David Metcalfe departing last year. The two friends recently sat down with me to talk about their lives after leaving Emmerdale and what's next for them following the launch of season 2 of their podcast. 'I'm adjusting. I think it's equally terrifying and really exciting', Roxy told me. 'You know when you're like, stood on the edge of a cliff and you're like, oh my god, it's so exciting. But equally, you're out of that bubble, you're out of that comfort zone. And there's also elements that you miss. You miss your friends, you miss your routine, you miss the character. 'But also I'm 42 now, and I was lucky enough to spend 16 years in a show that I loved. Life is short, and I'm really ready for new adventures for new projects and to see where those things take me.' David left the village last year (Picture: ITV) Leyla died in February (Picture: ITV) Matthew revealed: 'I was approaching 43 and the opportunity for me was something came up back in musical theatre, which is where I came from. I joined Emmerdale back in 2006 and it was only a three month contract, I was going to go straight back into the West End and carry on doing that. 'Three months went into six, and then it turned into a year, and then it turned into 18 years later. I was lucky enough to be offered a lead in the West End over Christmas to play Buddy in Elf the Musical. 'That was a no brainer to me. I was heading towards 43 and as Roxy said, there's a big wide world out there. Emmerdale is fantastic, it's amazing to have the regular income, you're settled in one place, you have to sometimes take the leap and do something different. It's really scary. Being in Emmerdale you think you're a big fish in a small pond and then you leave, and you realise you're a very little tadpole in a huge pond.' Matthew and Roxy are passionate about their new project Matthew and Roxy's podcast, Celebrity Side Hustles, sees people in the industry talk to them about the projects they have away from their usual jobs. In the last season, stars including Danny Miller, Rita Simons and Lou Sanders spoke to the duo about books, raising awareness of important causes and charities. The stars host the podcast Celebrity Side Hustles (Picture: James Melia) Opening up about how they found recording the next series, Roxy said: 'We've had a really varied group of people in terms of the kinds of stories and side hustles they're sharing. Some of them are deeply moving and profound. 'Mark and Laura [Norton] are talking about their children and the charity CureUsher and all the work they do around that. They have created so much attention around that charity and elevated it so much and created and raised so much money.' 'There was also Amy [Walsh] and Toby [Alexander Smith], he's written a film about male postnatal depression. No-one's really done any work around that and it was really brave of him, I think, to share his story and how he chose to share that through the film and working with various charities. She added: 'We also speak to Lisa Riley, I think she's probably had more side hustles than any other celebrity that I've ever met. Back in the day, when she was first in Emmerdale, soap stars were huge. People had posters in their bedrooms, Lisa rode that wave – she released perfumes, all sorts of stuff. She says at one point that soap stars were like the Spice Girls. It was a completely different time.' They met while filming Emmerdale (Picture: James Melia) 'I was slightly fanboying when we interviewed Adam Rickitt!', Matthew laughed. 'My cousin Laura had her bedroom plastered in posters of him!'. 'What we wanted to do with season two was reach out to people that weren't necessarily our friends at Emmerdale. Ross Adams, we worked together on The Good Ship Murder, so we wanted to talk to him about his agency. What we tried to do with season two was kind of reach out to other people that weren't just in our little Emmerdale family.' Stepping into podcasting has made Roxy and Matthew incredibly excited about future goals. Collaborating on a project away from soap has sparked a love for presenting in the friends, something they hope to pursue moving forwards. 'We would love to do some presenting', Roxy revealed. 'We had so much fun doing the first series of the podcast and loved the way we worked together. We really enjoyed listening to people's stories and discovering these facts about people that we thought we knew, and we did, but they also live these completely different lives we had no idea about. The two friends are looking forward to exploring life after soap (Picture: James Melia) 'We had so much fun doing it, we thought we wanted to do more.' Matthew and Roxy's friendship was born when they began working together in Emmerdale. When they first started filming scenes as David and Leyla, Matthew knew a strong connection was forming. 'It was around the time David was working at Eric's factory, and Leyla was in the office. I remember them saying, we're going to put you and Leyla together. I think the very first day we worked together, we realised that we've got something quite special. We both loved making scenes quite funny.' He added: 'There are a lot of actors that are quite aware of themselves and don't want to do things that are possibly silly or that would make them look funny.' Roxy smiled: 'If something wasn't working for my character, I always had the freedom to say, oh do you mind if I try this. Rather than Matthew being quite rigid and saying no, he'd always be like yeah let's try it. I think we found a way to be creative together and explore the scenes more. 'When I first met Matthew, he's always really friendly to new people. He's a very jolly person that always went out of his way to meet the newbie. I was awful, it takes me about four years to remember anyone's name! 'Matthew was very polite and I remember asking how long he's been there, and he said three years, I thought god, that's depressing! I was about 26 at the time so the thought of being in the same job for three years was a big no.' 'But you make friends, and it feels like home, and the rest is history.'
