Egypt mobile operators invest $2.7 bln in 5G rollout: Minister - Tech
Egypt's four mobile network operators have invested $2.7 billion in 5G spectrum and licenses since 2019, reflecting growing investor confidence in the country's digital strategy, according to Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat. Speaking at the 5G Technology Forum in Cairo on Monday, Talaat said the telecoms sector had significantly developed over the past decade and called 5G 'a qualitative leap' in how people work, live and connect. The event was organized by public policy firm Moharram & Partners and attended by ambassadors and representatives from the US, European Union (EU), Japan and major tech firms. Talaat noted Egypt's spectrum strategy was developed in line with international standards, citing the country's hosting of the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019. Massad Boulos, senior adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs to US President Donald Trump, said the forum showed growing cooperation with Egypt and called for increased investment across Africa. "Such conferences and companies represent a fundamental pillar for expanding cooperation with our Egyptian partners, as well as our partners in the EU, Sweden, Japan, and Finland," he added. US ambassador Herro Mustafa Garg stated that 5G was about 'reliable, secure networks' supporting everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. "This forum is not just about faster internet; it is about building reliable and secure networks that can support everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. American companies are ready to work alongside Egypt to provide the innovative and secure infrastructure that this country deserves," Garg said. Moharram & Partners CEO Sherif El-Badawy described the forum as a strategic step toward aligning public and private efforts in Egypt's digital transformation. 'The 5G Technology Forum is more than a technical event — it's a strategic platform bringing together decision-makers, industry leaders and government institutions to chart the future of Egypt's telecommunications sector,' stated Sherif El-Badawy, ambassador and CEO of Moharram & Partners. 'With participation from ambassadors representing the US, Japan, and several European countries, the forum fosters meaningful partnerships aimed at accelerating 5G deployment and positioning Egypt as a regional hub for digital innovation.' The event drew participation from major tech firms, including Ericsson, Nokia, Intel, IBM, Cisco, and Rakuten Symphony. Kevin Murphy, Ericsson's Vice President for North East Africa, said the company remained focused on 'building future-ready networks' and enhancing regional collaboration on 5G and cybersecurity. Telecom Egypt CEO Mohamed Nasr said the company was the first to receive a 5G licence through its retail brand WE, and would continue expanding services to meet the evolving demands of customers. Communications Minister inaugurates Intelcia's new regional HQ in Egypt
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has inaugurated the new regional headquarters of Intelcia in Sheikh Zayed City, Giza. Intelcia, a global leader in outsourcing services, continues to expand its presence in Egypt, reaffirming the country's position as a regional hub for business process outsourcing (BPO) and customer experience services. Intelcia Egypt currently serves clients across the United States, Europe, and the Gulf region, offering a wide range of multilingual services in seven languages. The company plans to create 1,300 new direct jobs by 2026, which will bring its local workforce to nearly 4,000 professionals. As part of its expansion strategy, Intelcia will open two additional service centres in Greater Cairo and Alexandria, raising its total number of locations in Egypt to four. Talaat emphasized that the expansion reflects Intelcia's confidence in Egypt's talent pool, particularly the country's youth, who are skilled in delivering high-quality multilingual outsourcing services. He highlighted that Egypt graduates more than 750,000 university students annually and that the ministry is actively working to upskill youth from diverse academic backgrounds to meet the needs of the global outsourcing market. 'Egypt's competitive edge lies in its human capital,' Talaat said. 'Our digital workforce is a key driver of the nation's positioning as a leading outsourcing destination.' Karim Bernoussi, Co-founder and CEO of Intelcia Group, described the opening of the new headquarters as a milestone in the company's strategy for sustainable global growth. 'Egypt offers a fertile ground for innovation, thanks to its supportive investment climate and a wealth of professional talent,' he noted. Ahmed Elzaher, CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), stated that Egypt's value proposition in outsourcing goes beyond cost competitiveness. 'Our ecosystem is driven by a dynamic, tech-savvy workforce and a trusted business environment,' he said, adding that Egypt has emerged as a preferred destination for both nearshore and offshore services. Mohamed Slimani, CEO of Intelcia's operations in the Americas and English-speaking markets, stressed that Egypt serves not just as an investment destination but as a strategic base for cross-border service delivery. 'Our centres in Greater Cairo and Alexandria are pivotal to Intelcia's multilingual, omnichannel solutions—powered by Egypt's high-calibre talent,' he said. Intelcia first entered the Egyptian market in early 2023 with a service center in Borg El Arab Technology Park, Alexandria. Since then, the company has rapidly scaled its operations, onboarding around 2,700 professionals. This latest expansion underscores Intelcia's commitment to leveraging Egypt's growing capabilities in multilingual outsourcing. It also aligns with the company's broader vision to deliver innovative, tech-driven customer experience solutions to global markets. With a workforce of over 40,000 employees worldwide, Intelcia operates across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The company has built a strong presence over the past 25 years, particularly in Portugal, which serves as a hub for multilingual services in Europe—a model Intelcia now aims to replicate in Egypt.

Egypt signs deal with Microsoft to train 100,000 on AI technologies
Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and Microsoft Egypt, aimed at advancing Egypt's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025–2030. The agreement focuses on building AI capabilities among youth and government employees, while promoting the responsible and sustainable use of AI technologies. The MoU was signed by Raafat Hindi, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Transformation, and Mirna Arif, General Manager of Microsoft Egypt, in the presence of senior officials from both sides. It marks a new phase in the ongoing partnership between the Ministry and Microsoft to develop AI applications across Egypt. Talaat emphasized that the MoU builds on a longstanding and productive relationship with Microsoft, and supports Egypt's national vision to accelerate AI adoption across sectors as a catalyst for socioeconomic growth and a knowledge-driven digital economy. He noted that the agreement aligns with several core pillars of the second edition of the National AI Strategy, which aspires to establish a robust AI industry in Egypt. These pillars include strong data governance, advanced infrastructure, a supportive legal framework, and—most critically—human capital development to sustain long-term innovation and competitiveness. 'Collaborating with Microsoft allows us to enhance local AI talent and ensure the responsible deployment of this powerful technology, drawing on international best practices,' Talaat said. 'This supports a comprehensive AI ecosystem that aligns with Egypt's development goals.' Under the agreement, the Ministry and Microsoft will jointly train and qualify 100,000 individuals—including young professionals and IT staff across government ministries and digital transformation units—in AI technologies. The training program includes tailored learning paths, hands-on experience, and content developed by Microsoft. The partnership also provides for technical and sector-specific consultations, enabling government bodies to identify and implement AI-powered solutions that improve innovation, efficiency, and service delivery. Furthermore, the MoU promotes responsible AI use, with a strong emphasis on sharing global expertise and best practices in AI governance. Another key element of the agreement is the launch of a multi-stakeholder dialogue to explore regulatory frameworks for AI, and to promote regional and international knowledge exchange on emerging standards and governance models. Raafat Hindi noted that the partnership reflects the Ministry's commitment to collaborating with global technology leaders to drive Egypt's digital transformation. 'It will empower local talent to create AI-based solutions that enhance public services while upholding ethical and responsible tech use,' he said, citing the alignment with Egypt's Responsible AI Charter. From Microsoft, Samer Abu Latif, President of Microsoft for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, affirmed the company's dedication to supporting digital transformation through innovative technologies. 'Responsible AI adoption and digital skills development are central to our mission,' he said, calling the MoU a strategic milestone in implementing Egypt's AI strategy and positioning the country as a leader in the digital economy. Hoda Baraka, Advisor to the Minister for Technological Skill Development, described the MoU as a key step toward cultivating future-ready talent. 'Through this partnership, we aim to build skills aligned with global innovation trends and empower a generation capable of applying AI to real-world challenges. We also look forward to expanding this initiative to other African countries,' she said. Microsoft Egypt General Manager Mirna Arif concluded: 'We are proud to sign this MoU and deepen our collaboration with the Ministry. Training 100,000 youth and public sector employees not only strengthens Egypt's digital workforce but also reinforces a culture of responsible AI use. This effort lays the groundwork for a sustainable, knowledge-based economy aligned with Egypt's national aspirations.'
