King and Queen to visit Canada in May

The King and Queen will visit Canada from May 26 to 27, Buckingham Palace has announced. They will attend the state opening of the country's parliament in the capital Ottawa in a visit set to mark King Charles' twentieth visit to the country. Charles is Canada's head of state and will be travelling to the country with his wife less than a month after former Bank of England governor Mark Carney's Liberal Party election victory. His most recent in 2022 was to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. Along with Camilla, the then Duchess of Cornwall, Charles visited the Newfoundland island city of St John's, the country's capital region, and parts of the Northwest Territories. Canada was reportedly a destination for the King last year. When he met Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England, much was made of Charles' red tie - said to have been worn in support of Canada where he is King. Speaking on their meeting, a palace official said of Charles: 'Showing support for Canada is something he's always done and that he will continue to do.' Their upcoming visit to Canada comes after the King and Queen's most recent royal tour to Italy in April, where they completed a four-day tour of Rome and Ravenna.
