How e-bike riders can stay safe on the road

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Electric bikes have a few restrictions under New York State law for anybody riding. Elmira officials and local e-bike expert share safety recommendations for people to follow. Some of the legal restrictions under state law prohibit anyone 16 years of age and under from operating, according to Traffic Sgt. Joe Linehan for the Elmira Police Department. People are able to ride e-bikes in speed zones of 30 miles per hour or below. Linehan noted that riders on e-bikes are often seen not actively pedaling, which could indicate higher speeds. Teen on e-bike hits truck and dies from injuries 'It's a little bit more important that people take those precautions. Make sure that they're following vehicle and traffic laws, that they're stopping at stop signs, that they're signaling turns, that they're coming to a stop at these stop signs and traffic signals so that they can operate safely,' Linehan said. Electric bike specialist Devin Williams at Glider City Powersports said how paying attention while riding is crucial, including checking your mirrors and looking over your shoulders to avoid distractions. He recommends that people wear helmets while riding e-bikes as a precaution. 'I'm a big stickler for safety vests. I think that, that's a really good thing, or any reflective clothing.' In an upcoming episode of Talk of the Tiers, Elmira Mayor Daniel Mandell mentioned about law enforcement looking to address issues related to electric bikes. 'It's something we're going to have to step up enforcement because I'm seeing the same thing right now. And it's dangerous for pedestrians it's dangerous for the people that are riding the bikes, driving the bikes, and it's dangerous for traffic,' Mandell said.
