USC's super regional dreams dashed in season-ending loss to Oregon State

Then sophomore Eric Segura, who was pulled in the first inning of his start Friday after getting knocked around by Saint Mary's, fired three scoreless frames. Sophomore Laif Palmer closed out the final inning, inducing the fifth double play of the day and getting a strikeout after the Trojans managed only their third hit. All three Oregon State pitchers fired mid-90s fastballs, something rare among USC pitchers. The Beavers did it with young arms and a fearsome heart of its lineup as three of its four big boppers — Aiva Arquette, Gavin Turley and Trent Caraway — all hit home runs. Turley got the Beavers on the board in the first inning, chopping a single through the right side to score Easton Talt after he led off with a double off the right-center field wall. As Turley waited on deck for his second at-bat, Arquette expanded Oregon State's lead to 3-0, launching a 414-foot homer into the left-center field bleachers for his 18th home run but first in front of the Goss Stadium fans. It was his fifth home run in as many Corvallis Regional games, and it helped him earn Most Outstanding Player honors for the regional. Advertisement Jacob Krieg put the finishing touches on the beatdown with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. With the win, Oregon State (44-13-1) advances to the super-regional round. Brian O'Connor, who led Virginia to 7 CWS and 2015 national title, takes over at Mississippi State
Associated Press STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Brian O'Connor, who led Virginia to seven College World Series appearances and a national championship, is leaving the Cavaliers to take over at Mississippi State. MSU announced O'Connor's hiring after the Bulldogs' season-ending 5-2 loss to Florida State on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament. The 54-year-old O'Connor won 917 games over 22 seasons at Virginia and was national coach of the year three times and Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the five times. Under O'Connor, the Cavaliers played in 18 NCAA regionals and nine super regionals, and his 2015 team won the national championship. He had 102 players selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft, including 31 who reached the big leagues. 'Mississippi State represents everything I love about college baseball — tradition, passion and a relentless pursuit of excellence," O'Connor said. 'I've coached against this program and followed it closely for years. The atmosphere at Dudy Noble Field is nationally recognized as the best in the sport. I'm incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead a program with this kind of legacy and fan base.' Mississippi State fired seventh-year coach Chris Lemonis on April 28. Lemonis led the Bulldogs to the 2021 national championship but they mostly have struggled since. Justin Parker took over as interim coach and the Bulldogs closed with wins in 11 of their last 15 games and reached the Tallahassee Regional final. They finished 36-23. Athletic director Zac Selmon said MSU's hiring of O'Connor represents a 'powerful step forward.' Virginia had five seasons with 50 wins and 13 seasons with at least 40, and his .702 career winning percentage ranks second among active Division I coaches. O'Connor's team went 32-18 this season and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. 'Brian O'Connor is one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in college baseball. He's a national champion, a Hall of Famer, and a proven leader with a track record of building a championship-caliber program," Selmon said. No. 9 overall seed Florida State rallies to beat Mississippi State 5-2, win Tallahassee Regional
Associated Press TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Cal Fisher tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning and Max Williams gave No. 9 overall seed Florida State the lead with a two-run single in the eighth as the Seminoles rallied to beat Mississippi State 5-2 on Sunday and win the Tallahassee Regional. Florida State (41-14), in its 61st appearance in the NCAA Tournament, clinched a berth in the super regionals. The Seminoles have advanced to the College World Series 24 times and never won it. They were the runners-up in 1970, 1986 and 1999. Only Texas (38) and Miami (25) have more CWS appearances than Florida State. Gehrig Frei put Mississippi State (36-23) on top when he homered to left field on the first pitch of the game from Wes Mendes (7-2). Joe Powell homered to left off Mendes in the fifth for a 2-0 lead. Mendes gave up five hits with nine strikeouts. Florida State couldn't get anything going against Bulldogs starter Karson Ligon despite getting four hits and drawing five walks in his four innings. Luke Dotson (1-2) pitched three innings and surrendered the lead on four hits and a walk. Ligon and Dotson both struck out seven. Ryan McPherson gave up the final two runs. Fisher homered off Dotson after Myles Bailey led off with a double. Dotson left after issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth. Bailey drove in the third run of the inning with a single. Mississippi State was making its 41st appearance in the tournament. The Bulldogs have made 12 CWS appearances. They won it in 2021 and were the runners-up in 2013.
