Scholastic Superstars: Bradyn Brothers, Tamaqua

What accomplishments are you most proud of and why? There are a few accomplishments that I am the most proud of. One that I am very proud of is getting into multiple honor societies within Tamaqua. I have always worked very hard to try to be in the top five of my class as well as earning a high GPA while still participating in extracurriculars. Getting into the honor societies has really solidified that accomplishment because it is a reminder of how far I have come as an individual and as a student. My other big accomplishment is getting into Auburn University and being awarded the Woltosz Scholarship. There was a point in time where I thought that going to Auburn would not be possible. Earning this scholarship helped to make that become possible. It also showed the weight of my achievements not only in the eyes of my community or high school but also in the eyes of an outstanding college like Auburn. Bradyn Brothers (SUBMITTED) What were your most rewarding school or community activities? I have always been a huge music person and I really enjoyed singing, dancing, and even learning how to play a musical instrument. I have been able to get a very well-balanced education not just because of the core classes I take but also because of my musical classes. All of these classes and groups have taught me so many lessons between learning to act professional to time management to being prepared. They have also been so rewarding because I've been able to learn about leadership and have gained leadership experiences throughout my high school years. I am one of the current Drum Majors for the Tamaqua Marching Band, the current President of the Tamaqua Jazz Chorale & Concert Choir as well as the current Vice President for the Tamaqua Area Drama Club. I have learned so much from my fellow peers and my teachers that I truly do not know who I would be without them. What do you do in your spare time? I really enjoy reading books, cooking, and playing video games. I also like to watch new movies that come out with my family and friends. I like to craft different things, whether that be making bracelets, painting, or crocheting. What are your plans after high school graduation? After high school, I plan to attend Auburn University to major in Chemical Engineering. I chose chemical engineering because my father is an engineer, and I always found his job to be intriguing. I have also always been interested in the sciences and math, specifically chemistry. I figured that chemical engineering would be the best route for the passions and interests I have for my career. I chose Auburn because I really loved the school. Between visiting the campus itself to meeting other engineering students and experiencing the atmosphere at a football game, I just fell in love with the college. Auburn was the college where I felt the most at home, and I am very excited that I will be able to continue my education there. What do you see yourself doing and where do you see yourself living in 15 years? In 15 years, I could see myself working a job in engineering, earning some experience in the field. I could also see myself finishing up research and classes in order to earn a PhD in chemical engineering as well as a teaching certificate. One day, I hope to teach chemistry or engineering principles at the high school or college level. Hopefully, I will be well on my way to achieving this goal in 15 years. I could see myself living somewhere in the South Atlantic Region of the US, preferably around North Carolina maybe as far west as Tennessee. I really enjoy visiting those states, so, hopefully, I can live there some day. Whom do you most admire and why? I would have to admire my parents the most. I admire my father because he is an engineer, and he was really the one who inspired me to join that career path. He's also taught me to give my best effort in what I do. As a kid, he was my coach for a lot of sports, so he really taught me not to give up after one mistake. Just because one thing gets you down does not mean that you have to give up on everything you've worked so hard for. I admire my mother because she has always taught me to give back to those who give to me. She is my main source of inspiration when it comes to the community service activities I do. She has also always taught me to be humble and thankful for everything that I have received in life. I feel like going to college as well as earning a distinguished degree and career is a way to give back to my parents. They have done so many things for me over the years that I do not think my education and degree can thank them enough for their support. In a sentence, what is your philosophy of life? Always follow the signs you find because they will lead you down the right path. Finish this sentence: The most interesting thing about me is … I once had dinner with an Olympic Silver Medalist in Luge, Gordon 'Gordy' Sheer. Schuylkill Democrats hold rally in Tamaqua

TAMAQUA — About 30 people gathered along Route 309 in Tamaqua for a rally held by the Schuylkill Democrats to protest the actions of the Trump Administration on Saturday. Protesters held signs that read 'History has its eyes on you' and 'Hate won't make America great' as traffic passed by. Jan Kear, of Palo Alto, held a sign that said 'Hands Off' and included words such as social security, medicare, free speech and others. She also held a small Ukrainian flag. 'Everything on the sign is a concern of mine,' she said. Kear's late father came to the United States from Ukraine in 1923 seeking opportunity and freedom. She said would be upset about what is happening in the nation, and that attending the rally is one way to possibly 'stir something' inside people to awaken them to what is going on nationally. * Jan Kear, of Palo Alto, holds a sign May 10, 2025, in Tamaqua on Route MARCHIANO/ STAFF PHOTO * A protestor in Tamaqua holds up a sign encouraging continued support for Social Security, as well as a Ukrainian flag. The efforts are a way to bring attention to the issues facing the nation. Anyone is welcome to attend. Previous rallies had 100 or more people present, but attendance has been steady, organizers said. Democrats contend that the Trump Administration is testing the tenets of the U.S. Constitution regarding the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government. 'We support people's rights and to have a quality life,' said Todd Zimmerman, chairman of the Schuylkill County Democratic Committee. The majority of those who drove by Saturday were respectful of those protesting. Some even honked their horns in support, he said. One person waved a Trump hat out a passenger window, though. Army veteran Josephine Kwiatkowski, of Pottsville, said she is saddened about what is happening in the country. 'As a veteran, this is not the country I was willing to give my life for,' she said. She believes the government is targeting the most vulnerable of the population with its most recent actions. Rachel Keck attended with her children. 'Watching the news is really, really scary,' she said. She viewed participating in the rally as a way to take action against the Trump Administration. 'It can feel very oppressive watching the news, and you start to feel hopeless,' Keck said.
