Indian woman stabbed in Canada, robbed near home in late-night horror
A 23-year-old Indian woman was brutally attacked and robbed near her home in Winnipeg, the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba, police said. A teenager has been arrested in connection with the incident. The woman, identified by community members as Tanpreet Kaur, was walking back to her apartment after finishing her evening shift late on June 23 when she was ambushed by two strangers shortly after midnight on the 1–99 block of Roslyn Road. According to a statement released by the Winnipeg Police Service on Wednesday, bystanders intervened to stop the assault. The attackers fled the scene after stabbing the woman and stealing her belongings. 'The victim was stabbed and robbed of her cell phone. During the assault, she was able to disarm the suspect and held onto the knife, while they continued to assault her. Bystanders intervened and called 911, and the suspects ran off,' the police said. Kaur was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. A 17-year-old girl has since been arrested in connection with the crime. She faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery, and multiple breaches of a release order, according to authorities. She has been detained in custody. As she was walking toward her apartment from the bus stop, she said she heard footsteps running behind her. As she turned back, she was pushed by a woman who asked her for her phone and identity. Then the woman assaulted Kaur with a knife. Kaur said she did not give in and fought with the woman. During the struggle, she took hold of the knife as she defended herself. A man accompanied the attacker but he only stood behind the attacker while the two women struggled. Winnipeg police said in a statement that bystanders in the area stopped the attack, after which the suspects quickly fled after stabbing and taking her cards and mobile phone. She mentioned that the assailant was also accompanied by a man who mostly stood behind while the girl was assaulting her. Her brother Harsirat Singh, who also lives in Canada, informed that she was stabbed to the left of waist, abdomen and had deep cuts to her left eyelid and arm. According to him, the attacker took away her phone and cards. 'Cops informed us that they found three people involved in the attack, based on CCTV footage from the vicinity.
