5 Delhi residents, including 2-year-old, killed as car overturns and catches fire in Bulandshahr; 1 injured
At least five people, including a two-year-old, were killed and one person sustained injuries after the car they were travelling in allegedly rammed into the median of a bridge, overturned and caught fire in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh early on Wednesday, said the police.
The deceased have been identified as Tanveez Ahmad, Nida, 14, Momina, 24, Zainul, 2, and Zubair Ali, residents of Delhi's Malviya Nagar, according to the Mahendra Tripathi, Station House Officer (SHO), Jahangirabad.
The SHO added that the injured woman was identified as Gulnaaz. 'She was admitted to the Community Health Centre in Jahangirabad for treatment before being referred to the Bulandshahr district hospital. She is currently out of danger,' Tripathi said.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Ramkaran, Circle Officer, Anupshahr, said the incident took place between 5.15 am and 5.30 am, when the family of six were returning from a wedding in Chamanpura village of Badaun district in their CNG-powered Swift car.
'Prima facie, it appears that the driver of the car dozed off. Since it was during the early hours, there weren't many people on the road. A local resident of the area informed the SHO of Jahangirabad police station about the accident and soon our police team reached the spot,' the officer said.
SHO Tripathi said the family was returning to Malviya Nagar after attending the wedding. 'The moment they reached Chandauka roundabout near Anupshahr, their CNG-powered car hit the median of the bridge, overturned and soon caught fire. We are investigating the reasons for the fire,' he added.
'We have sent their bodies for post-mortem examination and have informed the families,' the officer said.
