Milan appoint Tare as new sporting director
AC Milan have appointed Albanian Igli Tare as their new sporting director, the Serie A club announced on Monday, as part of a broader reset following a disappointing season. The 51-year-old former forward joins after Milan finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on European competition for the first time since 2019. "We are pleased to welcome Tare to the Rossoneri family. He is the right person to kick-off our reset," Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani said in a statement. Tare spent 15 years as sporting director at Lazio, overseeing a period that included three Coppa Italia and three Italian Super Cup titles. Five priorities for next Milan sporting director incl. Reijnders and Theo Hernandez
Tuesday's reports claim that Milan are close to reaching a final agreement with former Lazio executive Igli Tare to become the club's new sporting director, but there is still plenty of work to do once an appointment has been made. Milan have been linked with several executives over the last few months, including Fabio Paratici, Tare, Giovanni Sartori, Tony D'Amico, Giovanni Manna and most recently Lee Congerton. Advertisement However, reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport and others claim that there will be a new meeting between Tare and the Rossoneri representatives before the end of the week, which could be 'decisive'. Here is a look at some of the pressing decisions the next Milan sporting director will have to make. Five pressing decisions for next Milan sporting director The next head coach BOLOGNA, ITALY – FEBRUARY 27: Sergio Conceicao head coach of AC Milan during the Serie A match between Bologna and AC Milan at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on February 27, 2025 in Bologna, Italy. (Photo by) Among the most pressing priorities for the next Rossoneri sporting director will be a decision on the team's head coach for the 2025-26 campaign. There has been no confirmation either way regarding the future of current incumbent Sergio Conceicao, who is currently suspended and will miss the final match of the 2024-25 campaign against Monza on Saturday evening. Advertisement It has been an overwhelming season for Milan in terms of results on the pitch, with the team currently in ninth place with one game to go, and guaranteed to miss out on European football next season. Conceicao was only appointed midway through the season, and won the Supercoppa Italiana in his first two matches in charge. Despite a run to the Coppa Italia final and an unbeaten record against Inter, Milan were eliminated from the Champions League in humiliating fashion against a depleted Feyenoord side and dropped crucial points against most of the 'big' teams in Serie A, including losses against Juventus, Bologna, Lazio, Napoli, Atalanta and most recently Roma. Deciding on a new, permanent head coach will be a priority decision for the next Milan sporting director. Manchester City's approach for Reijnders MILAN, ITALY – MARCH 15: Tijjani Reijnders of AC Milan celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the Serie A match between AC Milan and Como at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on March 15, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) Another pressing decision will be whether to accept any potential offers for star midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in the summer transfer window. Advertisement The Netherlands international has been one of the standout performers for the Rossoneri over the last two seasons, and has been linked with moves to both Manchester City and Real Madrid in recent weeks. Recent reports claim that Milan will seek a minimum fee of €70m if they are to sell the former AZ Alkmaar man, with other outlets claiming that it could cost a total package close to €90m in order to acquire his services from the Rossoneri. Outlets in Italy believe that Milan will look to reinvest the money from a potential Reijnders sale in the signings of Samuele Ricci and a new centre-forward, potentially Lorenzo Lucca or Udinese. Either way, the next Milan sporting director will need to decide which steps to take. The futures of Theo Hernandez and Maignan UDINE, ITALY – APRIL 11: Theo Hernandez of AC Milan during the Serie A match between Udinese and AC Milan at Stadio Friuli on April 11, 2025 in Udine, Italy. (Photo by) Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan will both be entering the final year of their contracts at the start of the 2025-26 season, which opens the possibility of them both leaving for free at the end of their deals. Advertisement This is a situation that Milan will be hoping to avoid, particularly given that the defender had been linked with €100m moves away from the club just last summer. Reports in Italy claimed that Maignan was worth somewhere in the region of €40m at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. A decision over whether to sell for a likely reduced fee or to pursue with negotiations over contract extensions for both players will be crucial this summer. What to do with Saelemaekers ROME, ITALY – DECEMBER 07: Alexis Saelemaekers of AS Roma celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the Serie A match between AS Roma and Lecce at Stadio Olimpico on December 07, 2024 in Rome, Italy. (Photo by) One player that will be returning to Milan in the summer is Alexis Saelemaekers, who has spent the 2024-25 season on loan with Roma, while Tammy Abraham has spent the season in San Siro on loan from the Giallorossi. Advertisement Both of those deals were straight loans, without buy options included, which means that Saelemaekers will become a Milan player again this summer, even if the club look to sell him on immediately afterwards. There is a decision to be made there, as the Belgian could raise important funds to be spent in the summer transfer window, which is helpful given that Milan will miss out on around €80m as a result of their failure to qualify for any UEFA competition this season. Saelemaekers has also been in solid form during his loan spell with Roma and could make be a solid option at wing-back or in attack depending on the choice of the next head coach.

Tare: Milan job would be an ‘honour'
Igli Tare has admitted he would be honoured to become Milan's new sporting director, as he remains one of several candidates under consideration for a role on the Diavolo's board. It's no secret that the Rossoneri are searching for a new figure to lead their sporting operations, with the current structure — led by technical director Geoffrey Moncada and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, officially an advisor to the club's ownership — having failed to deliver the expected results. Tare: Working for Milan a 'target for everyone' While Paratici has reportedly been ruled out after preliminary talks, Tare remains in the running, along with Bologna's Giovanni Sartori and Atalanta's Tony D'Amico. Advertisement Speaking to La Stampa, the former striker described a position at Milan as a career 'target' and said it would be 'an honour' to work for such a prestigious club. TOI River Dialogues: Uneven distribution, not shortage of water, is a concern in India, say experts
1 2 Lucknow: Collecting rainwater from where it drops and stopping wastewater from where it is generated should be the mantra for the revival and conservation of rivers. The idea was shared by Prof Vinod Tare from IIT Kanpur at the TOI River Dialogues held on Monday. Deliberating on revitalising rivers during a panel discussion, Tare, founding head of cGanga, Environmental Engineering & Management Programme at IIT Kanpur, said, "There is no shortage of water in our country. The concern is its uneven distribution. For 30 days, we have water, and for 330 days, we have sewage and wastewater around us. We need to convert this into business so that our rivers keep flowing." Speaking on the theme, 'Leveraging Public-Private Partnerships for Clean Rivers Innovation, Investment, and Sustainable Impact,' Head of Business Development and MA, Adani Group, Kundan Kishore said, "PPP is just an extension of public funding. Currently, the govt spends entirely on funds and developing infrastructural projects. Fortunately, in India, PPP has reached quite a mature state, and that has been validated by the interest of domestic investors and foreign investors in India." Seeking proper structuring of the PPP document, Kishore added, "For a successful PPP, we need the right project implementation framework and the correct conceptualisation, keeping in mind the kind of leverage the govt is trying to build in through an association with a private partner or investor." He added, "What we need is a sizable investment chunk and a longer period to give returns. A project of Rs 500 crore or Rs 1000 crore will help a private investor leverage its efficiency in a better way." Underscoring the importance of water management programmes, particularly water literacy, Prof Pritam Ranjan from the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, said, "It's time that educational institutes bring in water management programmes in their curriculum. At IIM Indore, we have a unique rural immersion programme where students visit villages across India to help villagers live a better life. Such programmes help in creating awareness of the usage and reusage of water. Public participation is the key to conserving water." Drawing attention to the growing farmer suicides in Maharashtra, CEO of Naam Foundation, Ganesh Thorat, said, "This is the biggest crisis and disaster when it comes to water. For over a decade, we focused on water conservation and rural development in Maharashtra, and we realised that people connect stronger at places where there are issues related to water. We need to spread awareness on the rejuvenation of rivers through desilting and excavation to enhance storage capacity and recharge groundwater tables." Tare said, "Decentralising sewage treatment will aid in water conservation. Every city that sees rainfall should have 100-200 STPs. Public and private players both need to value water to transform rivers. Valuation doesn't refer to pricing, but there is no harm in bringing it into account books."

Milan talk to Tare, but Atalanta chief could be top choice
Milan talk to Tare, but Atalanta chief could be top choice Milan held negotiations with Igli Tare this week to be their new director of sport, but reports continue to circulate their real target could be Atalanta's Tony D'Amico. The search for a more traditional figure in this role has been going on for weeks, with the club having been on the verge of putting pen to paper with Fabio Paratici only for it to all fall apart over the possibility of a looming trial into his financial dealings at Juventus. Advertisement They turned instead to free agent Tare, who is out of contract after leaving Lazio, holding a meeting in Rome with CEO Giorgio Furlani. EPA-EFE/MICHELE MARAVIGLIA However, now suggest that the real preferred figure for Furlani is Atalanta director of sport D'Amico, so Tare would be used as a stopgap. There are some problems here, because D'Amico has a contract with La Dea until June 2027, so he would need to terminate that by mutual consent before signing for the Rossoneri. Time is running out, as Milan are still without a director of sport and the transfer window is set to open soon, with many clubs already hard at work negotiating deals. Over the last couple of years, the Rossoneri have shared out the duties of this role among several different people.
