Tariq Boney from Washington commits to Michigan football as 3-star in class of 2026

The recruiting train is starting to roll. On the morning of April 26, Michigan football locked up who it hopes is the future of the quarterback room in four-star Brady Smigiel, a consensus top-100 player in the class of 2026. Later that night, the Wolverines got a pledge from somebody who hopes to make a living chasing down that position. Advertisement U-M added three-star edge Tariq Boney of Washington (St. John's High School), one of Michigan's best recruiting hotbeds and the same alma mater as former U-M defensive back Quinten Johnson. Michigan Wolverines players take the field before a game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. Boney doesn't have the elite rankings like some other U-M recruits. He's graded as the No. 81 edge in the country and not inside the top 1,000 players in the class of 2026 according to 247 Sports' composite rankings. But his offer sheet implies a number of programs see untapped potential. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive lineman held offers from more than two dozen Division I programs, including Auburn, Georgia, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The Wolverines and coach Sherrone Moore now have five prospects committed in the class of 2026. Advertisement Tony Garcia is the Michigan Wolverines beat writer for the Detroit Free Press. Michigan football gets a commitment from 2026 EDGE Tariq Boney

Michigan football gets a commitment from 2026 EDGE Tariq Boney Michigan football just had great success with a 6-foot-1 edge rusher, perhaps getting another, the Wolverines would see similar success? Josaiah Stewart was in Ann Arbor for two years and was drafted in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Thus, the maize and blue have looked to seek his eventual replacement via recruiting. One top target isn't particularly highly rated in 2026 Washington (D.C.) St. John's three-star edge rusher Tariq Boney. Hailing from the same high school as former Wolverines safety Quinten Johnson, Boney is rated the No. 937 player in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking, but he has offers from Auburn, Georgia, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Washington, Wisconsin, and others. He ended up committing to Michigan football over Tulane and West Virginia. Boney joins wide receiver Jaylen Pile, cornerback Brody Jennings, quarterback Brady Smigiel, and offensive lineman Bear McWhorter in the class. Ironically, Michigan football's current starting edge rusher, TJ Guy, was rated No. 937 nationally as a recruit according to the 247Sports Composite. The Wolverines took just one edge rusher this past cycle in five-star Nate Marshall, who flipped to and from Auburn.
