Iskcon flyover tragedy: Gujarat high court grants four-day interim bail to Tathya Patel
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Friday granted four-day interim bail to Tathya Patel — accused in the July 2023 Iskcon flyover tragedy that claimed nine lives — to allow him to be present for his mother's scheduled surgery. Earlier, Patel was released on temporary bail for seven days, but his mother's surgery was postponed. He sought an extension of his temporary bail for two more weeks. His counsel submitted that the doctors evaluated her condition and now the surgery is likely to take place on May 26. The state govt opposed the request, and the prosecutor argued that "the date of surgery has been fixed as per the convenience of the mother of the applicant. Earlier, when the operation was postponed, the applicant did not immediately surrender. Subsequently, on May 18, he was taken by the police to the jail authority". After the hearing, Justice L S Pirzada ordered the release of Patel for four days – from the morning of May 26 until the evening of May 29 – with a police escort. "It is clarified that on May 26, 2025, if the operation of the mother of the applicant is not performed or postponed, the present applicant must surrender to the jail authority immediately without fail." Iskcon flyover accident: Tathya seeks extension of temporary bail for mother's surgery
Ahmedabad: Tathya Patel, the main accused in the that claimed nine lives in July 2023, filed another application in the requesting an extension of the temporary bail granted to him earlier. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Patel was granted bail for one week to attend to his ailing mother, who was scheduled to undergo surgery. His counsel submitted before the high court on Monday that Patel was made to surrender by the police escort on Sunday and complained that he was deprived of liberty for a day as the interim bail ended on Monday. Seeking an extension of the interim bail for two more weeks, Patel submitted that his mother's surgery was postponed because she had high blood pressure, and her vitals were not considered normal for surgery. The doctors would re-evaluate her condition on May 24 and fix the date for the surgery. The state govt opposed Patel's plea on the grounds that the date for the surgery had not been finalised. The govt lawyer suggested that Patel could file an application for temporary bail when the date for the surgery is finalised. After a brief hearing, Patel's counsel agreed to raise the issue a couple of days later. Patel was behind bars since July 2023 after his speeding car ran into a crowd gathered on the Iskcon flyover on the SG Highway, killing nine people. He was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and other offences under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was denied regular bail since his arrest.
