NIU Group Acquires Botswana's Tati Mine, Restarting a Strategic Mining Asset

LONDON, April 30, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NIU Group, headed by Austrian investor Cevdet Caner, has announced the acquisition and restart of the Tati Mine in Botswana. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for Tati, positioning the operation as a reliable and focused Botswana-based producer of nickel, copper, and other critical metals for the global market. The purchase of Tati by NIU Group represents a substantial new foreign investment in Botswana. It builds on the country's strong governance, respect for the rule of law, skilled workforce, and reputation as a leading mining jurisdiction. Under its new ownership, Tati will ramp up operations to increase output and efficiency in full compliance with Botswana's regulatory norms and standards. NIU Group views Tati as a key contributor to Botswana's economic future. Tati's substantial impact on Botswana's economy will include approximately USD 3bn in contributions to the country's GDP over a decade of operations. This represents a projected 1.5% increase in Botswana's annual GDP. The workforce is expected to grow to over 400 direct employees, with up to 3,000 additional indirect jobs projected at peak operations, bringing meaningful development opportunities to the nearby city of Francistown and other towns in eastern Botswana. In the process, NIU is committed to working closely with national and local authorities, as well as the communities surrounding Tati to generate positive social impact and prioritize transparent and participatory engagement that aligns mining operations with local needs. Botswana's Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon Kenewendo, stated: "We are pleased with the return of Tati Mine to productive service after eight years in liquidation. NIU's strategic investment will not only restore operations at this historic asset but also inject fresh momentum into the economy of North-Eastern Botswana. This milestone strengthens our nation's standing in the global critical-minerals arena and underscores Botswana's resolve to harness its resources for sustainable, inclusive growth." NIU Group plans to invest further capital into the company to develop and expand mining operations to realize the asset's full value, over and above the asset's replacement value, estimated to be over USD 500m. Returning the asset to profitable operations will require approximately USD 200m of capital expenditure over a 10-year period. This includes USD 50m over the initial 18 months of ownership to ramp up to steady-state production levels, with the remainder to be sustaining capital expenditure post-2026. Of the course of 10-year Life of Mine, the asset is expected to generate over USD 4.2bn in revenue. Caner said: "Tati is a unique asset. We are building a dynamic company that will grow in tandem with Francistown and the entire region. We will remain dedicated to local development through initiatives in education, infrastructure, and healthcare, while maintaining focus on safety, environmental compliance, and stakeholder engagement. We are seeking to quickly establish a stable and growing operation that will be a long-term partner with communities in and surrounding Francistown, as well as with the citizens and government of Botswana." Tati will produce a variety of metals and hydroxide salts that are widely traded internationally for well-established end uses. Products will include nickel and cobalt hydroxide precipitates, copper cathodes, metal bars for platinoids (platinum, palladium, rhodium), and precious metals (including gold). Caner added: "New technologies to be introduced at Tati will improve our ability to supply critical minerals for the global economy and deliver these products in an environmentally sustainable manner. We are proud to bring renewed focus to this important asset that so closely aligns with our vision of becoming a leading Western mining investor focused on inputs necessary for advanced industries and future energy requirements globally." NIU Group is a leading Europe and US-based investment company focused on entrepreneurship and value creation, with the goal of becoming a fully integrated mining investor and operator with assets across North America, Latin America, Africa, and Europe. Austrian entrepreneur Cevdet Caner has invested in the mining and property sectors for over two decades. NIU Group plans to make further mining acquisitions in 2025, building a diverse portfolio of critical assets that drive long-term growth and align with the global demand for key inputs to advanced industries and cutting-edge technologies. 25 Hair Products From Black-Owned Businesses That Are Basically Pure Magic

We hope you love our recommendations! Some may have been sent as samples, but all were independently selected by our editors. Just FYI, BuzzFeed and its publishing partners may collect a share of sales and/or other compensation from the links on this page. Styling lotions, strong edge controls, mousse with a flexible hold — it's giving *bottled witchcraft*. 1. A bottle of Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls — a soft styling lotion that'll have your curls looking better than they ever have. You can break up with crunchy locks and say hello to soft, gorgeous, defined curls with surprisingly amazing hold. Holy grail hair product? I think so. Promising review:"I just washed my hair and I am officially in LOVE with this product! It smells SO good and makes my curls feel so soft, while also boosting curl definition and volume. There's no film, and my curls aren't crunchy after they dry post-application. My grays are usually always frizzy after I wash my hair, no matter what I use for my curls, but I'm not witnessing that at all with this product. Absolutely love this and recommend it highly to anyone with natural curls." — Tati Get it from Amazon for $17.97. 2. Lightweight boho goddess locs for an easy *and I mean EASYYY*, fabulous, protective style. They're pre-looped, which means the install will be a total breeze. I– I think I need them. Boho Locs is a woman-owned small biz. Promising review:"I do not know where to begin because I am so in love with my Boho Locs. I feel like a Nubian queen. They are incredibly lightweight, which is a big plus because my natural hair is fragile due to being on chemo several times over the last few years." — Latrika W Get them from Boho Locs for $157+ (available in 11 colors and three lengths). 3. A Cécred nourishing hair oil that smells absolutely divine and will help seal in moisture without weighing down your locks. It's compiled of 13, yes 13 (!!!) luscious oils to help reinforce your hair's lipid barrier and will have you absolutely feelin' yourself. Reviewers are loving that this lightweight potion actually absorbs into your strands rather than just sitting on top. Oh, nourishing hair oil, ~I love you down to the bone~. Cécred Cécred is founded and owned by Beyoncé! I finally got my hands on this bad boy, and oh, baby, it is incredible. I've been trying to figure out how to style my curly clip-in extensions and make them match my real hair, but nothing has been working. I did a braid out three times and it just didn't look right, I was literally ready to give up and just straighten my hair again. That is, until I added this. This and the moisture-sealing lotion work ridiculously well together; they're the most magical duo ever for curls. My braid out turned out so perfectly, I'm still in disbelief. Plus, my hair isn't oily!! It absorbed so well. I put it on one side of my hair at a time, and its definition difference was wild. My curls haven't looked this curly in years. Also, it smells so freakin' good, it's ridiculous. Today, I forgot to put on perfume. I was just running to pick up food and stop for iced coffee, but I was feeling self-conscious because I ran errands without my normal *smell good* routine. I was told by both cashiers at both stores that I smelled incredible. The first time, I brushed it off because I couldn't think of what could smell good on me. But after the second time, I gave it some thought and remembered that I put some of this oil in my hair in the morning and could still smell it two hours later (I didn't know others could smell it too. So not only did this make my curly hair look like *chef's kiss* perfection, but it also smelled like heaven. Cécred literally never disappoints. This oil is liquid gold. I'm obsessed. I stand ten toes behind this oil and literally every product I've tried from the line. These are my all-time favorite hair products, no competition. Get it from Cécred for $22+ (available in two sizes). 4. A Bask & Lather strong hold edge control for thick edges because it seems that nothing is laying your baby hairs the way you want them laid. Well, meet this little jar of magic, honeyyy! Say goodbye to your weak edge control and say hello to flake-free hold for all types of hair. Kinky, coily, loose, whatever you've got, this stuff will surely replace the gel you currently use. Bask & Lather is a woman-owned biz that specializes in natural products made from 100% organic ingredients. And check it out on TikTok! This reviewer even went to the gym and their edges did not move. One word — shook. Oh, and I totally understand that laying your edges is not a necessity and isn't everyone's cup of tea! For more on this, check out " Just A Friendly PSA That You Don't HAVE To Lay Your Edges Down If You Don't Wanna." Promising reviews: "Definitely works with no residue left behind and lasts ALL DAY! The only product that won't get greasy and lift after a few minutes!! I love it! Will be buying again." — Ms. T "My curls are very stubborn. No matter how much Eco styling gel I used when putting my hair in a puff or ponytail the curls would still pop out. This edge control looks nice and sleek while giving my hair shine and holding my curls down all day!" — Brandi Get it from Amazon for $16.99. 5. A Pattern Beauty hair steamer so that super expensive hair mask you bought can really absorb. It'll help enhance your results, add volume, stretch your strands, and detangle your curls. Just call this baby your fairy godmother. Pattern Beauty is founded and owned by actress Tracee Ellis Ross. Promising review:"Do not walk, run to get this!!! It is the product I never knew I needed, and now I cannot live without it! After sleeping on my hair in the morning, I have 10 minutes or less of steam, and my hair looks fresh and bouncy. When I am setting it in the evenings, I give my hair a quick steam to lock in oils and moisture, and my hair no longer dries out during the week. It's a complete God send." — Janice Get it from Pattern Beauty or Ulta for $169. 6. A "Mousse Def" texture foam that'll give your hair (any type, might I add) a flexible hold without all the flakes and crunch. First ingredient in this has GOT to be witchcraft because, howwww?! This stuff does it all — detangles, conditions, defines, AND adds shine in just one step. Magic in a bottle, that's what this stuff is. The Doux is a woman-owned small biz that specializes in professional-quality products for all hair types. Okay, I have a secret. IDK how to do my hair when it's curly. *BUT* I'm slowly investing time in figuring out what the heck to do with it and what products actually define my curls. Well, this is one of 'em. This mousse was my best friend last summer. No flaking, no stiff hair, just soft, defined curls. I love this mousse, it works fantastically. ~For me~ hair products that are made by Black-owned businesses always deliver like no other products can. Made for hair like mine by people with hair like mine. 10/10. Promising review: "I use this stuff FAITHFULLY!!! It gives my curls great definition without weighing them down, and there's no flaking. It's also GREAT for a wash-n-go!" — Markitha Get it from Amazon for $14.34. 7. Camille Rose moisture milk for all you curly babes whose curls are thirsting for some good moisturizer. This leave-in-conditioner contains vitamins A, D, and B12, AND it smells heavenly. Refresh your curls and help make detangling easier with this lovely little moisturizer. Your curls will thank you for how *amazing* they look. Camille Rose is a woman-founded/owned business. Promising reviews:"I have been wanting to try Camille Rose for a while now, and this was the first product I thought to pick up. It did not disappoint — it smells really nice and really keeps my hair moisturized. I will be repurchasing! Hair type:4a/4b." — Folasayo "I have long, frizzy, wavy hair. When I put this product on my hair, it smells great, leaves my hair with beautiful curls, and it's soft to the touch." — Kindle Customer Get it from Amazon for $13.98. 8. A Tgin deeply conditioning hair mask with castor oil and biotin to help get your hair to a healthier-looking state. It'll help resurrect any dry, damaged, or color-treated hair with intense hydration that'll reduce shedding and breakage just as well as Winifred Sanderson resurrected Billy Butcherson. Thank God It's Natural (TGIN) is a woman-owned small biz based in Chicago that specializes in hair products. Promising reviews:" My scalp felt invigorated after applying. I left the masque on overnight and when I rinsed the next morning, my scalp felt refreshed and clean. I actually think this product also aided in elongating my curls. Hair looks hydrated as well! I plan to use it every two weeks." — Dawn M. "I didn't expect much from this mask, but was pleasantly surprised. I used it as directed after shampooing with a clarifying shampoo and my hair is soft and smooth. It calmed the frizz so much that I didn't even need a styling product!" — HumanPerson Get it from Amazon for $17.99. 9. A "Homecurl" curl defining cream, a gel-cream by Fenty Beauty that'll shape, define, and enhance your curls in just one step. Tough on split ends but still will give your hair some soft, touchable body and bounce. This stuff takes "wash and go" VERY seriously. And in case you didn't know, Fenty Beauty is founded and owned by Rihanna! Promising review:"10/10. 5 stars. ROUND OF APPLAUSE. This stuff is the BOMB. Firstly, if I could eat this product, I would. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the BEST smelling hair product I have EVER used (and I've tried quite a few, folks). I am so, so happy to have finally found a product that suits my thick 2C/3A hair. I have a mix of curls and waves and often struggle to find something that 1) makes my entire head look good, and 2) lasts for more than a day. Whether I braid or blow dry/diffuse my hair, it always looks fantastic when I use The Homecurl. Up until this point, I'd been using a mix of curl cream and gel, but often found it was too heavy for my hair and weighed it down after a day. This product feels so light in my hair, but has an amazing hold and does exactly what it claims to do." — TaliaSapphire Get it from Fenty Beauty or Sephora for $16+ (available in two sizes). 10. A bonnet hair dryer attachment by Glow by Daye — a genius little gadget you'll thank your lucky stars for constantly. Perfect for when it's 3 p.m. and you're getting ready for a night out and realize you kinda wanna do a twist out but there won't be enough time for your hair to dry. Attach this baby to your blow-dryer and *bam* perfect, dry twist out in no time. Glow by Daye is *also* a small biz! Promising review:"Large enough to fit over a full head of Velcro rollers!! Drawstring helps keep the hat on. Good quality. Just make sure you keep your dryer on low and alternate between the cool setting, because it gets hot quickly! Has venting holes to let air out. Good price for such a helpful item that helps dry my hair. Happy I don't have to stand there with my dryer in hand, I rested the dryer on the counter and caught up on emails. :)))" — David Theophilus Get it from Amazon for $21.96 (available in two colors). 11. Bread Beauty Hair-Mask with Australian Kakadu plum (which is super fun to say) and starflower oil, which, together, could literally be mistaken for a magic potion. I mean, this stuff helps reinforce hair follicles — which helps prevent breakage — delivers you super soft, velvety strands, and doesn't weigh your luscious locks down! Quench your curls' thirst with some of this cloud-like hair treat. Bread Beauty Supply is a woman-owned small biz that creates hair products for curl types 3a to 4c. See it in action on TikTok! BuzzFeed Shopping editor Kayla Boyd loves this — here's what she has to say: "I recently started using Bread products and I really love how lightweight and easy they are to use. Since I have mixed textured hair that's been frequently dyed, it tends to get very dry. After using this deep conditioner my hair felt so much better and softer. In addition to that, the smell is A-MA-ZING. Definitely one of my new favorite wash day products." Promising review:"I was gifted this product to try out. I use it 2–3 times a week and so far, I love it! I notice my ends feel softer and more healthy. It's super thick and creamy so it detangles my hair so easily. The scent is light but smells delicious, like a bakery. I would definitely recommend this product if you are looking for a good conditioner that helps with dryness and damage but also won't weigh your hair down!" — Kacey Get it from Ulta or Bread Beauty Supply for $14+ (available in two sizes). 12. A Girl + Hair scalp and hair clarifying rinse to help avoid dandruff and maintain an itch-free scalp. It's made with apple cider vinegar to help remove buildup caused by your everyday hair products, and it helps repair damaged follicles without stripping the natural oils that are essential for keeping your mane moisturized. Plus, the hydrating shea butter and strengthening castor oil will have your locks looking and feeling the best they've ever been. Girl + Hair is a woman-owned small biz that specializes in products to maintain natural hair underneath hair extensions. Promising review: " I have braids in. It's going on three months and this product got rid of ALL my buildup — one wash!!! I also have scalp issues with flaking and itchiness because of the braiding hair. This product got rid of flakes, itchiness, and buildup. Not to mention, the bottle is big and AFFORDABLE. Y'all, this is a WIN! I faced many struggles with other shampoos and my flaky scalp condition. WHEN I TELL YOU this scalp has been clean for a week now... usually the flakes come back after a week but they haven't. I want the whole darn hair care line. FYI, Black-owned by a dermatologist!! Get on it. Her Instagram is @girlandhair and her TikTok is also @girlandhair. Check her out." — Nysha Get it from Amazon for $15.99. 13. A lightweight, vitamin-infused, vegan anti-frizz growth serum that'll have you belting out 🎶 do you believe in magiiiiic 🎶 by The Lovin' Spoonful because this stuff is absolute sorcery. It's filled with ginger, turnip, and carrot root oils that'll help stimulate growth, soothe your scalp, and protect against breakage while keeping your hair silky smooth all at the same time. This stuff has to be some sort of Hogwarts potion that got outta Professor Slughorn's class. Amazon Rucker Roots is a family-owned small haircare biz that uses all-natural ingredients in their products. 14. A vented paddle brush by Cécred *with* a hook so you can hang it up and make some room in your hair tools drawer. It's perfect for both wet and dry hair detangling because the flexible bristles gently glide through your locks. This thing is like a magic wand for tangles. Cécred Okay, so we all know that I *swear* by these products. I haven't tried anything by Cécred that didn't work magic. *Hits a Galinda high note*, okay, I'm frantically excited. This is the absolute best brush I've ever used. I'm confused as to how it works so dang well. I braid my curly hair up at night into two French braids, so I tested this on my wet hair last night, and it glided through my tangles with ease and without snagging. Plus the brush didn't retain all the water in my hair because of the honeycomb design. I just took the braids out and used it again now that my hair is dry, and I had zero problems getting it to brush through. My favorite thing though is how easy it is to clean. I have dyed red hair which has stained my other brushes, so I was worried that this brush would be totally ruined by my hair dye. BUT, to my surprise, the dye residue or whatever came right off, literally with my fingers. I really love this brush. I also love that I can hang it up because my haircare drawer is filled to the brim. This brush is so worth it. Get it from Cécred for $40. 15. A Hairbrella so the rain and humidity don't mess up that blowout or silk press you just paid for. It's also satin-lined and breathable to protect your hair from frizz and sweat. Hairbrella / YouTube / Via Hairbrella is a small biz established in 2016 that specializes in hats combining fashion and function to protect against all types of weather. See it in action on TikTok! Promising review: "I never carry an umbrella cause they're too bulky, so when I saw the Hairbrella I was so excited. It keeps my hair dry and my curls nicely coiffed, rather than me looking like I stuck my fingers in a light socket. I'm telling everyone I know about it; it's an amazing alternative to those wide-brimmed hats or a briefcase LOL! Truly it's never going to leave my side from now on! I definitely recommend it." — Gina C. Get it from Hairbrella for $24.50+ (available in eight colors and three sizes). 16. A nongreasy, coil-defining curl cream that'll nourish your curls, waves, or coils without all that dreaded, sticky buildup. Eliminate the frizz, revitalize the curls, and marvel at the shine. 😍 Taliah Waajid is a woman-owned small biz that specializes in products for naturally curly, coily, and kinky hair. Promising review:"For my type 2c, thick, coarse, low-porosity, and frizz-prone hair, this is by far the best styling product I have found. Before finding this product, the only way I could get defined curls with minimum frizz was to wash every day and use my styling/control products. I use this curl cream to get defined second and third day curls. My hair feels soft and does not feel coated with anything crunchy or stiff, though there is a sense of a light protective coating — hard to describe. I've never found another product that does anything like this. For my hair, it is absolutely not greasy in the slightest, and there is still movement to my hair. It completely controls my frizz, defines my curls, and keeps my hair looking groomed with good curl definition for the rest of the day." — A.S. Get it from Amazon for $8.98+ (available in two sizes and in multipacks). 17. A nourishing blend of oils like avocado, castor, argan, and olive to help promote hair growth and prevent breakage and split ends. Use this like you would a leave-in for 20 minutes with a cap on, and boom — beautiful, SUPER-nourished kinky tresses. Kinky Tresses is a woman-owned biz that makes products for natural hair — and all of their products are cruelty-free. The founder is also a former lab scientist, so you can expect some out-of-this-world results. Promising review:"This oil really surprised me. My attitude with oils was always an oil is an oil. But there is something with this oil combination that makes a big difference in my hair. Even though it's an oil, it makes my hair feel so hydrated, I can't explain it. It just works. I buy three bottles at a time now." — Candice K. Get it from Kinky Tresses for $13.99. 18. A curl-defining gel by Camille Rose that's made with marshmallow root to help smooth, define, and detangle your locks. Apply a generous amount of this little potion to freshly-washed hair and you'll see your strands magically transform into the most beautiful, soft, ~not crunchy~ curls you ever did see. Promising review: "This is my first time leaving a review but I recently cut off my relaxed hair and have been experimenting with some natural hair products to use as stylers for my wash-n-gos. This has been the BEST product I've used. Normally after day one and two my hair gets dry when I use other products, but today is day six after using this product and my hair is unbelievably soft and moisturized. Not an ounce of dryness. The consistency is somewhat like a gel but it doesn't leave my curls crunchy at all. My hair was well defined. I love this product and I would recommend it to anyone. — IslandPrincess Get it from Amazon for $19.78. 19. An Eden BodyWorks leave-in conditioner to moisturize your tresses and clump your curls together for some impressive, bouncy curls, no sorcery involved. You'll be doing Beyoncé hair flips all day. Eden BodyWorks is a woman-owned business that specializes in natural products to nurture, restore, and maintain hair. Reviewers with 2a–4c hair say it works well for them! Promising review: "This product is soooo moisturizing! I have type 4b/4c hair with some 4a in the front and I'm low porosity, and my hair loves this product! The consistency is really nice and it smells good too. You don't need a lot either." — Shanteshia Get it from Amazon for $16.70. 20. A jar of Pattern Beauty strong hold gel if a slicked back 'do is your vibe. Long lasting and will help your hair stay put *and* won't cause damage cuz it's infused with sea moss, aloe vera, and chia seeds to help keep your cutie little curls nourished. Promising review:"I really love this gel. I bought all of the Pattern products and they are some of the best hair products I have ever used. My hair feels so moisturized and is very defined. I have thick type 4 hair for reference. The gels gives a good cast but it doesn't get too crunchy and I haven't experienced any flaking so far. The strong hold gel with the cream is the perfect combination. 10/10 recommend." — Nadiya 21. A well-loved "defunk" spray by Uncle Funky's Daughter with lavender, some sort of magic potion, and rosemary to get rid of hair odor without absorbing your hair's natural oils. It can also help soothe itchy scalp and help you go without washing a bit longer if your hair requires less cleansing. Uncle Funky's Daughter Uncle Funky's Daughter is a woman-owned biz founded by Renee Morris in 2014. She has used her own 20+-year natural hair journey to expand the natural haircare line. Promising reviews:"In between washes, it's hard to keep my scalp happy. Even if my hair is well-moisturized, my scalp suffers. Defunk has really helped keep my scalp healthy and happy, and on the plus side, it smells great!" — Karina "So I'm sort of an ingredient snob (lol) and the inclusion of saccharomyces ferment so high up on the ingredients list is what drew me to this product in the first place. This spray really wakes up my hair and keeps my roots strong and my scalp refreshed. It also gives a nice feel to my slightly high porosity hair when I use it as a refresher. Definitely recommend." — Naima Get it from Uncle Funky's Daughter for $12.99. 22. A vegan purple temporary hair color gel because you love a bright, vibrant hair color but geez, does your hair hate it! Gemini Naturals is a woman-owned small biz that specializes in temporary hair dye that works on dark and textured hair. Promising review:"Best temporary color I've used! The gel was easy to apply and the color is vibrant even when it dries, plus you can add more if need be. I spritz my hair with a light hairspray and there was absolutely no transfer! I will definitely be trying more colors!!" — Alicia D. Get it from Gemini Naturals for $7.80+ (available in two sizes and in more colors). 23. A coffee seed- and castor-oil-infused hair oil that works to moisturize your hair and scalp while also making your locks smooth and glossy — ooh la la! It uses growth secrets (raise your hand if you think magic is the secret 🙋🏽‍♀️) that are unique to the Dominican Republic to help you retain length and moisture and help promote healthy hair growth. It is a light conditioner, but so full of moisturizing goodness. This product has made my hair so soft and I have even more ringlets than I had before. I need to look no further for my holy grail in a leave-in conditioner, I found it." — Dana Get it from Brown Butter Beauty for $24.50+ (available in two sizes). 16 Famous Black Women Who Shared Stories About Black Hair Being Completely Mistreated By Hairstylists While On Set

1. Halle Berry was known for her pixie cut at the beginning of her career, but the reason she sported short hair was that she previously had negative experiences with Hollywood hairstylists. 'That's why I had short hair,' she said. '[Maintaining] it was easy. I think as people of color, especially in the business, we haven't always had people that know how to manage our hair." 2. Skai Jackson revealed that she went through multiple hair stylists while starring on Jessie. She said the hairstylists on set "knew how to do everyone else's hair but not mine." She explained she went through a period where every season she got a new hairstylist. "It was definitely my mom always doing my hair, even when I was on Jessie, she would do it the night before filming the next day, so I was prepared," she shared. It wasn't until the last season of Jessie that she found a great hairstylist who would continue doing her hair on Bunk'd. 3. Tia Mowry recounted when she once cried after seeing how one hairstylist attempted to style her hair. She recalled, 'I was doing this movie and, my God, I was the lead. And after this person did my hair, I cried. I was like 'I cannot, like, I cannot go out there looking like this." "I just don't understand why you have to fight to get someone to understand the importance of that," she said. Netflix 4. Lots of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fans loved the finger waves Tati Gabrielle's character had during the series, and she actually had to do the hairstyle herself. Tati did it herself for two years before it became too difficult for her to keep doing. "What could take a hairstylist maybe 20 minutes to do my whole head, it took me an hour [to an] hour and a half. I was having to wake up earlier than everybody else to do my own hair. It was just a lot," Tati shared. "I went to the point of being like, 'OK, this isn't fair.'" She then made the choice to shave her head before the show's second season so she was no longer expected to do the hairstyle. 5. Monique Coleman revealed that the reason her High School Musical character, Taylor McKessie, was always wearing headbands was to hide how badly the film's stylists did her hair. Coleman said, 'We've grown a lot in this industry and we've grown a lot in representation and we've grown a lot in terms of understanding the needs of an African American actress. But the truth is, is that they had done my hair, and they had done it very poorly in the front.' Coleman proposed to the hairdressers that they make headbands part of her character and that she felt lucky that Disney was receptive to her feedback. 6. Yvette Nicole Brown once said she gets her hair done before coming to set so she won't look "crazy on screen." She tweeted that "Most Black actresses come to a new set with their hair done (me) or bring their wigs and clip-ins with them." She also added, "It's either that or take a chance that you will look crazy on screen. Many of us also bring our own foundation. One too many times seeing no shade that matches you will learn ya!" 7. Taraji P. Henson recalled an incident on a magazine shoot where a stylist who didn't know how to do Black hair damaged hers with a root booster. Henson considered asking for a new stylist, but was afraid she would be considered "difficult." She also said there was another incident where they bought her a cheap wig that they didn't even know how to style. Eventually, Henson just brought in her own stylist and paid for it. 8. Meagan Good recounted how her forehead was burned by a hairstylist on a set. 'When [the hairstylist] went to press my hair, he put a metal comb underneath the comb and that comb slipped out and the pressing comb basically burned my forehead and I had about five or six tooth marks on my face,' she said. "It was quite frustrating for someone to say that they knew how to do it and kind of use me as an experiment." 9. Queen Latifah said that early in her career, she encountered many hairstylists who were ignorant about Black hair. She said many stylists didn't know how to work with her hair. 'It's not because their heart wasn't in the right place — they just didn't have the skill set to do black hair.' Miramax 'As African Americans, we have all different shapes, sizes, colors, textures, and you got to be able to work with that. We are always in a position to be able to work with what white people do. That's just how it's been, but it has to be reversed. It has to be some respect over here and figuring out what to do with our hair. So we just really need to add more people to the industry,' Latifah said. 20th Century Fox 10. Lorraine Toussaint recounted stories of her hair getting damaged by Hollywood hairstylists. Arturo Holmes / Getty Images "I would be a lie if I said it hasn't been a problem. And it's been tough-going for many years," Lorraine said. Arturo Holmes / Getty Images "Our hair is way more complicated," the actor explained. "If I've been told I have a not-black [hairstylist], the first question I say is, 'Can they do a 'press-and-curl?' If you can do a press-and-curl, we can work together. If you don't know what a press-and-curl is, we've got to start from scratch. But it is a challenge." Freeform 11. Early in her career, Natasha Rothwell often had to buy her own hair supplies to bring on set, and this would almost cost her what she would make for filming that day. Axelle / FilmMagic / Getty Images 'It's a real disservice to actors of color who are effectively doing someone else's job and not getting paid for it,' she said. Unique Nicole / FilmMagic / Getty Images She also said that if a Black actor is No. 1 on the call sheet, they can get a 'star request' to choose their own stylist, which is how many Black hairstylists have gotten into the industry and worked enough days to join the union. HBO 12. Gabrielle Union wrote an essay for Glamour where she described the mistreatment of her hair on productions as an up-and-coming actor. Claudio Lavenia / Getty Images 'I was like a guinea pig on set, and I didn't yet have enough power to request a stylist who I actually wanted to touch my hair,' she wrote. 'It got to the point that I would pay to have my hair done before I got to work and pray they didn't screw it up." Buena Vista Pictures Union said, 'I realized very quickly that there were many people in hair and makeup trailers who were totally unqualified to do my hair. Hairstylists used Aqua Net–like hairspray with crazy amounts of alcohol, which caused chunks of my hair to literally come off on a styling tool.' Cbs Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images With her success now, Union has more power to choose who does her hair on set, but she says it's still difficult to find qualified people. She tweeted about it, saying, 'The outright refusal to hire Black and POC folks who are in the union AND the insane and unequal hurdles that are put up for these artists to join the union." Aisha Dee played Kat Edison, a main character on The Bold Type, but she revealed that it was years before there was a stylist on the production who knew how to do Black hair. Don Arnold / WireImage / Getty Images In an Instagram post, she wrote, 'It took three seasons to get someone in the hair department who knew how to work with textured hair. This was impactful on so many levels, and I'm grateful for the women who show me how to embrace and love my hair in a way I never had before. I want to make sure that no one else ever has to walk onto a set and feel as though their hair is a burden. It is not.' Freeform 14. Gabourey Sidibe has had to suggest looks for her characters to directors beforehand so that she can come to set with her hair already done. Dia Dipasupil / Getty Images for Bottomless Closet 'If they don't have the budget to hire a Black hairstylist for me, or won't, I just get the director to agree that my character should have box braids or Senegalese twist,' she tweeted. Maya Dehlin Spach / WireImage / Getty Images She explained, 'In pre-production, when we were creating a look for the hair, for me it was very important to bring a woman of color on in the hair department to create the look for Black Canary. My hair, my texture, the kind of blonde we were going for…and I called her up and I said, 'Honestly, Margot, it's different. I need [hairstylist] Nikki Nelms and this is why I need her.'' Warner Bros. Pictures Smollett-Bell says that Robbie didn't initially understand her request, but after hearing Smollett-Bell out, she gladly agreed to hire Nelms as her stylist. Warner Bros.
