Field of dreams for Juddmonte with three Classic chances

Juddmonte have three hopes for Classic glory as they hold a particularly strong hand in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday. The leading chance for the late Khalid Abdullah's operation, according to the betting at least, is the John and Thady Gosden-trained Field Of Gold, a grey son of Kingman who fell just short in his bid for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Beaten just half a length by Ruling Court, the colt will now look to emulate his sire as he was also defeated by the same margin in the Rowley Mile Classic before going on to land the Irish equivalent. 🏆RULING COURT WINS THE BETFRED 2000 GUINEAS!🏆 Back to back Guineas for William Buick! #ITVRacing | @NewmarketRace | @WilliamBuickX | @godolphin — ITV Racing (@itvracing) May 3, 2025 'He's in good form, he's trained nicely since Newmarket the last day and John and Thady are both really happy with him,' said Juddmonte's Barry Mahon. 'We're very much looking forward to seeing him again, it's a strong race but he's in good form and he'll hopefully travel over well. 'It would be great if he would go one better than last time, if history can repeat itself we'll be very happy!' Also anticipated to run a big race is Cosmic Year, another Juddmonte-owned son of Kingman who has been trained by Harry Charlton to three successes from three runs so far. His most recent outing came in the Listed King Charles II Stakes at the Newmarket Guineas meeting, where he was a smart winner over seven furlongs. 'He'll have learned a bundle the last day, he's a very talented colt,' said Mahon. 'He's still very unexposed in terms of the quality of the fields he's been running in, but he has the potential to be a very good horse. 'I think we'll learn a lot more about him and we'll glean whether he's a miler or a seven-furlong horse and whether he's a Group One horse or not. 'He's got huge potential and Harry's very happy with him, hopefully he can acquit himself well.' Juddmonte's third contender is Windlord, a son of Dubawi whose form includes a third-placed run in the Beresford Stakes over course and distance and a runner-up finish in the Sandown Classic Trial when beating subsequent Dante runner-up Damysus. 'He does have some very good form, he was behind two Group One winners at the Curragh last year in the Beresford Stakes,' Mahon said of the Andrew Balding-trained runner. 'Even his comeback run at Sandown, where Oisin (Murphy) felt he didn't stay the 10 furlongs, was well franked by the Wathnan horse that came second in the Dante. 'He has been training well and we'd be hopeful that he'll run a respectable race.'

Rashabar connections confident ahead of 2,000 Guineas

Rashabar will head into the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas "underestimated", according to his connections - but he will have some history on his side. The Brian Meehan-trained Coventry Stakes winner sports the famous Sangster family colours which have been carried to victory in the Irish Classic five times already. Jaazeiro (1978), Sadler's Wells (1984) and Prince Of Birds (1988) were all trained by Vincent O'Brien, before Peter Chapple-Hyam won twice in three years with Rodrigo De Triano and Turtle Island in 1992 and 1994 respectively. "He's in tremendous form. He did a lovely bit of work this week," said Sam Sangster of the Manton Thoroughbreds-owned colt, who has been second in the Prix Morny, Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and Greenham Stakes since Ascot. "We had to miss the French Guineas due to a spiked temperature a week before, but he's been absolutely fine since then. "He's got a lovely draw in stall one and obviously he's paired up with the man that won the race last year (Sean Levey), so we're coming into the race full of confidence, to be honest. "If you were taking the form out of the Lagardere, you'd have every right to be coming with every confidence. "I think he's probably the horse that's a little bit underestimated, he definitely needed the run in the Greenham, he's had plenty of time between runs, Brian and the whole team are extremely happy with him, so it's all systems go really." The Juddmonte silks of the late Khalid Abdullah bid for a third win in the race, after Kingman in 2014 and Siskin in 2020. They are well represented this year with John and Thady Gosden's Newmarket runner-up Field Of Gold, Andrew Balding's Windlord and the only unbeaten runner in the race, Harry Charlton's Cosmic Year. Oisin Murphy rode Cosmic Year in his first two outings before Ryan Moore took the mount last time out, but Murphy is back on again this weekend. "I'm really looking forward to Cosmic Year. It's obviously a Group One and he's stepping up in class, but he's been very good in his three runs so far," he said. "It looks a very good renewal of the race with Aidan O'Brien's two Officer and Expanded, Field Of Gold and a Group One winner in Hotazhell, and who knows with some of the other horses who are lightly raced. "Harry seems very happy with him though, hopefully he can travel over there well and let's see how we get on." Colin Keane - who steered Siskin to glory - replaces Kieran Shoemark on John and Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold and speaking earlier this week said: "I'm delighted to be asked to ride him, he looks a very good ride going into the race, I'm very much looking forward to it. "The Juddmonte colours are those that growing up watching racing, you know who they are. I've been very fortunate to win two Classics wearing them and a couple more Group Ones and I'm just delighted to be asked to ride the colt at the weekend." Jessica Harrington's Hotazhell beat Aidan O'Brien's Delacroix in the Futurity Trophy. He was scheduled to run in the French Guineas but was pulled out an hour before the race as the ground was deemed too quick. "Hotazhell has been good since he returned from France," said Kate Harrington, assistant to her mother. "It was obviously a hard call (to miss the French race), but I think our decision was justified with the track record broken on the day. "We have just freshened him up since he came back and I walked the track at the Curragh on Tuesday and it was beautiful ground with a great job done on watering it. We are really looking forward to him running a big race and he has a lovely draw as well in stall number four." Aidan O'Brien runs Officer and Expanded, while his eldest son Joseph is represented by Scorthy Champ. Joseph's brother Donnacha is also involved through Comanche Brave.

Moore upbeat as Lake Victoria has second shot at Classic glory

Lake Victoria headlines a field of 12 declarations for the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas as she looks to recapture her sparkling juvenile form at the Curragh. Aidan O'Brien's daughter of Frankel rattled off five straight wins last season, including elite-level victories in the Moyglare Stud Stakes here, the Cheveley Park at Newmarket and Del Mar's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Following an interrupted preparation, she lost her unbeaten record when sixth in the English Guineas, but was only two and a half lengths adrift of Desert Flower. Ryan Moore will again be in the saddle and said in his World Pool blog: 'That run should bring her on, and she'll be much fitter this time. I certainly haven't lost any faith in her, and I expect her to show her true colours on Sunday. 'It's a high-quality race, with the second and third from the 1,000 Guineas lining up again, as well as three more unbeaten fillies, so it's competitive.' Ollie Sangster's Flight and Simmering were second and third respectively at Newmarket and reoppose, along with ninth-placed Duty First for Archie Watson. O'Brien also sends out seasonal debutant January, who was second to Desert Flower in in the May Hill at Doncaster and Newmarket's Fillies' Mile in the autumn. The Dermot Weld-trained Swelter steps up in class after comfortably making it two from two when upsetting Exactly in the Group Three Priory Belle at Leopardstown. Donnacha O'Brien's supplemented entry Atsila has a similar profile after following up a Bellewstown maiden win with success in the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh, while City Of Memphis made a victorious debut at Cork earlier this month for Paddy Twomey. Adrian Murray duo California Dreamer and Jaliyah, Cercene and Tamam Desert complete the line-up. Los Angeles and White Birch will renew rivalry in a mouthwatering renewal of the Tattersalls Gold Cup, just less than three weeks after a cracking course and distance encounter in the Mooresbridge Stakes. Last year's Irish Derby hero had a neck to spare in that tussle, but John Joseph Murphy's stable star White Birch was having his first outing since impressively seeing off Auguste Rodin in the 2024 renewal of this event. A strong British challenge is headed by Andrew Balding's Champions Fillies & Mares winner Kalpana and Anmaat, a surprise scorer in the Champion Stakes on the same Ascot card for Owen Burrows. Ghostwriter, who raced with credit in a series of Group One events last term and was most recently seen finishing fourth in the Dubai Turf, represents Clive Cox and Karl Burke's Royal Rhyme makes the journey from North Yorkshire. Multiple Group One winner Porta Fortuna will make her four-year-old debut in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes and Coventry Stakes favourite Albert Einstein has his second start in the Group Three GAIN Marble Hill Stakes.

Field Of Gold tops 12 seeking Irish Guineas crown

Field Of Gold is heading to the Curragh (Mike Egerton/PA) This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Ante-post favourite Field Of Gold is among 12 confirmations for the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday. John and Thady Gosden's colt came with a wet sail in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket but could not catch Ruling Court. It was confirmed on Monday that multiple Irish champion jockey Colin Keane will take the ride this weekend. Field Of Gold is owned by Juddmonte, who have an incredibly strong hand in the Classic with Harry Charlton's unbeaten Cosmic Year and possibly Windlord lining up. Aidan O'Brien has saddled 12 winners of the race, with Churchill (2017) and Paddington (2023) triumphing in the last 10 years. He could field Tetrarch Stakes winner Officer, along with Expanded, Serengeti and Trinity College. But Twain, a Group One winner last year who missed Newmarket following a dirty scope, has not been supplemented. Jessica Harrington's Hotazhell, a late scratch from the French Guineas due to quickening ground, is set to make his seasonal reappearance, while Rashabar, second to Jonquil in the Greenham, is on target for Brian Meehan. Scorthy Champ, seventh at Newmarket, Donnacha O'Brien's Commanche Brave and Paddy Twomey's Currawood complete the list of possibles.
