Haven't filed your taxes yet? Missed the deadline? Here's what the IRS says to do next

The April 15 federal tax deadline has come and gone, but the IRS says you should still submit your tax return soon if you haven't already. Missed the Tax Day deadline? Here's what happens if you delay filing. You could be subject to penalties and interest if you don't file and pay your taxes by the April 15 deadline. After Tax Day, the IRS recommends filing as soon as possible to minimize penalties, especially if you owe money. If you're expecting a refund or don't owe money on your taxes, there's no penalty for filing after the April 15 deadline, but the IRS says taxpayers due a refund should still consider filing as soon as possible. In states like Kentucky, victims of natural disasters can receive extended tax deadlines, which pushes the deadline back to Nov. 3, 2025. Taxpayers living overseas, certain military service members and eligible support personnel in combat zones may also have extra time to file their tax returns, per the IRS. The deadline to request an extension was April 15, which guaranteed six more months (October 15) to file without penalties. However, an extension to file is not an extension to pay if you owe money to the IRS. If you didn't request an extension, the IRS says you should still file your taxes now and pay as much as possible to help reduce penalties and interest. The IRS says taxpayers who don't owe tax or are owed a refund won't have to pay penalties for filing after the April 15 deadline, but should still file ASAP. Those who e-filed tax returns should receive a refund about one month or less from the filing date, according to the IRS. You can typically check your refund status soon after you file using the Where's My Refund tool, downloading the free IRS2Go mobile app or calling 800-829-1954. The refund tracker displays three status types: Return received: The IRS has received and is processing your tax return. Refund approved: If the return is complete and accurate, the IRS will approve and prepare to issue a refund. Refund sent: The refund was sent to your bank or the IRS sent a check through the mail. A refund status will appear 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, three to four days after e-filing a prior-year return, or four weeks after you file a paper return. Typically, it takes up to 21 days to process an e-filed return, or longer for amended returns and returns sent by mail. The IRS recommends direct deposits as the fastest way to get your refund, rather than a mailed paper check that can take weeks to arrive. Tax Day 2025: How to find out what you owe if you haven't filed your income tax return

It's April 15, and you know what that means — it's Tax Day 2025 and time to submit your tax returns. If you're scrambling to complete them in time, then you might be wondering if you can file for an extension or if there's a way to find out how much you owe if you haven't filed them yet. Filing an extension doesn't mean you get an extension to pay any taxes owed. If you haven't paid and are eager to know how much you may owe, there's a way to find out. Here's how. More: Tax Day 2025 is almost here. How to file taxes at the last minute and track your refund If you haven't finished your taxes, you can file a six-month extension today. But as we mentioned, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. So how do you find out if you need to pay the IRS? The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides a way to see how much you may owe in taxes with their Tax Withholding Estimator. It is not guaranteed to give you the exact amount you owe, but it can help give you an idea of how much it might be. Here's how the Tax Withholding Estimator can be helpful for, according to the IRS: Estimate your federal income tax withholding See how your refund, take-home pay or taxes due are affected by the withholding amount Choose an estimated withholding amount that works for you To use this quick way to find your tax estimate, you will need these things: Your pay stubs for all jobs (and your spouse too, if applicable) Other income info (side jobs, self-employment, investments, etc.) Your most recent tax return Though the Estimator is a quick way to see how much you owe, only some people can use it. If you have a nonresident alien status or your tax situation is complex, you shouldn't use the Estimator. If you've waited until the last minute to file your taxes on Tax Day 2025, you have until midnight to get your return to the IRS, H&R Block reports. However, you won't have that long if you're mailing your taxes via the Postal Service. Most post office branches will maintain regular hours on April 15, according to Newsweek. Tax Day 2025 is almost here. What every Tennessean who still needs to file taxes needs to know

We are less than a week away from Tax Day 2025, and the Internal Revenue Service is still seeing a slight downward trend in the number of returns coming in so far. For 2025, 89,550,000 taxpayers have filed tax returns to the IRS as of the week ending on March 28. This is down .8% compared to 2024, where 90,315,000 people had already filed. This filing year has been slow for 2025 but has started to even out (as the IRS predicted) with Tax Day coming up next week. While time is slowly ticking down, there is still plenty of time to file your taxes online or get them postmarked before Tax Day. If you're not able to get it all done, be prepared to file an extension. Here's what you need to know before next week's deadline. Everything new parents need to know: Kids bring joy, chaos... and tax benefits. What to know as a new parent filing a return Divorced, separated or widowed in 2024? How it will affect your tax return Like most other years, you have until Tuesday, April 15. Tax Day always falls on that date, unless April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday or you happen to file an extension. So far, the average tax return is considerably higher than it was in 2024. The average refund amount for tax returns that have been filed so far is $3,170, as $120 average increase from 2024. So far, 29,615,000 refunds have been given in 2025, compared to 28,945,000 in the similar time frame in 2024. More than $102.253 billion in refunds have been given in 2025, which is about 10% higher than in 2024. The average 2025 refund is about $3,453. On average, three out of every four tax filers can expect to see a refund. When that refund comes in depends on when you file your tax return and the processing time with the IRS. And it also depends on how you file. In 2025, as we head into peak tax season, experts are telling people to expect longer wait times, especially if you are wanting an actual check and not doing direct deposit. CPA Practice Advisor, a resource for tax professionals, estimates if a person filed electronically on Feb. 17, they could wait until March 7 for their paper check to come in. The IRS issued a statement that people who claim the earned income tax credit or the additional child tax credit need to anticipate delays. Taxpayers claiming those credits should have started seeing updates via the IRS's "Where's my refund" tool and people who claimed the credits were expected to get refunds starting March 3. But that's only if they file their return online, take their refunds via direct deposit, and have no issues with their tax return. The IRS has a handy site so you can track the progress of your refund with the 'Where's My Refund' tool. Here's what you'll need to check on your refund status, according to the IRS: Your social security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN) Your filing status The exact refund amount on your return Need a bit more time to get your taxes straight? Don't worry, you can always file an extension. An extension allows taxpayers to have a couple more months to file their 2024 returns. Here's how you can file one. Go to and use their IRS free file to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension Request an extension by mail: File an Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. People can file by mail, online with an IRS e-filing partner or through a tax professional. If you know you owe money, go ahead and paywhat you owe using an online payment option. On there, just check the box that you are paying as part of filing for an extension And while it is a good option to have, it doesn't mean that if you owe the federal government money, you don't have to pay it until October 15. You can still accrue fines and fees for non-paid taxes even if you file an extension. This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: When is Tax Day 2025?
