Peoria Art Guild installs ‘yarn bombing' community street art project

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — People from across the nation participated in a local street art project through the Peoria Art Guild. Tuesday, members of the Peoria Art Guild began the installation of the 'yarn bombing' project at the Taylor Fawcett Totem sculpture. The sculpture is just one of many on Peoria's Sculpture Walk, which spans Washington Street. Nikki Wheeler, the director of education with the Peoria Art Guild, said the sculpture will be covered in yarn for the next few weeks if weather allows it. She said yarn bombing is a non-invasive form of street art that is meant to bring attention to an area or certain issues. For this project, the organization aimed to foster a sense of community. The Peoria Art Guild sent out requests for yarn squares on social media. Wheeler said the response was overwhelming; reaching far and wide. 'We received squares from as far away as Albuquerque, New Mexico, and New York,' she said. 'And people are just excited to have this sort of collaboration and take part in the community project.' Hundreds of people participated and sent tens of thousands of letters with their yarn squares. Wheeler was moved by the touching stories the organization received. One mother sent a square in memory of her daughter who lost her battle with mental health. Another participant sent a square as a personal scavenger hunt with their sister who lives in Peoria.
