Local medical student discusses the importance of National Wear Red Day
FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — This Friday is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about heart disease.
IU School of Medicine student, Taylor Kenyon, said heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and in Indiana. In fact, 1 in 3 deaths are due to heart disease. However, he said death rates have dropped more than 50 percent in the last 30 years thanks to research, medical advances and education.
Kenyon said the impact of seeing everyone wear red on Friday transcends the medical field.
Proposed Medicaid cuts could affect autism therapy
'The long-term effects of a heart attack or stroke are lifelong,' said Kenyon. 'Understanding this and seeing the individuals in the communities wear red, is not only great from a healthcare provider standpoint, but from someone who has seen this burden personally.'
