Pulse keep 100% Super League record with win over Thunder
London Pulse's superb start to the Netball Super League season continued with a hard-fought 61-56 victory over Manchester win was their sixth straight victory in as many games and puts them six points clear of second-placed Thunder in the Tchine's prowess at goal shooter proved key as she scored 37 goals for Pulse, which took her tally to 223 for the counterpart Elmere van der Berg managed 16 by comparison as Pulse defended impressively against the South who joined NSL in 2019, felt their way into the contest and had a narrow 29-26 lead at the half-time one point Pulse established a seven-point cushion in the third quarter but Thunder finished it strongly and reduced the deficit to three at home side's work-rate and clinical finishing ultimately proved the difference at London's Copper Box Arena, though, as they closed out the just under a minute remaining Tchine twice kept her composure and on this occasion Thunder had no answer. 'Could have gone either way' - reaction Player of the match Funmi Fadoju of London Pulse: "It was a hard match. Both teams came out and wanted to get that win and we got over the line."We knew they were a good team and very talented and we just had to start our own jumps first."Being unbeaten feels so good. It gives us so much confidence that we feel we can beat any side out there. We can hopefully push on from here."London Pulse head coach Sam Bird: "That was a great game to be part of. Thunder were really strong and there was some really good netball all over the court."It could have gone either way, but I thought we were calmer in that critical final phase. We're still looking for improvements."Today before the game is the most relaxed we've been and I think that belief is there now. We've got over the line and got good momentum now."Thunder coach Karen Greig: "I'm super proud of the girls. We knew that today was going to be a tough ask for us, and a little bit of inexperience showed at times."But the fact is we have pushed a London Pulse team full of superstars. There was a point in that fourth quarter where we could have taken it on."We had areas where we lost focus but there's really big positives and near the halfway stage we have more to show." Best of the stats This was just London Pulse's second victory over Manchester Thunder in 11 NSL meetings. Their only other success came during the 2023 season. Thunder scored twice as many super shots (14) to Pulse's but the London side's shooting success of 84% was superior to the Manchester team's 75%.Olivia Tchine is the NSL's top goalscorer with 223 in six games and a shot success rate of 87%. Pulse win inaugural Netball Super Cup
London Pulse have beaten Leeds Rhinos to win the inaugural Netball Super Cup at Sheffield's Utilita Arena. Pulse's Olivia Tchine scored 16 points in the final, which the London club won 20-15. The standalone competition took place before the Netball Super League (NSL) starts on 14 March. "I am so proud of the girls, so excited," player of the final and Pulse captain Zara Everitt told Sky Sports. "In previous years we have just missed out, we know this isn't the league trophy but it gives us a taste of, hopefully, what is to come." The format throughout the one-day competition saw each game last 14 minutes, rather than the usual 60. Manchester Thunder and Leeds Rhinos topped the two groups after each team had played three matches. Despite their great form all day, Manchester Thunder narrowly lost 17-16 to London Pulse in the semi-final thanks to great late defending by Pulse's Funmi Fadoju. There was another nail-biter in the other semi-final with Leeds Rhinos just pipping Nottingham Forest 15-13. As play got under way in the final, Pulse goal shooter Tchine was a standout performer, scoring three in a row to cancel out Leeds shooter Joyce Mvula's early score. Rhinos captain Bethany Brittain hit back next but Nichole Breedt then slotted in a super shot - a new rule which allows shooters to score two points from a dedicated area on the edge of the shooting circle during the last five minutes of each of the four quarters of every match. Scores flew back and forth but Pulse gained a 12-6 lead at half-time. Leeds looked as though they were staging a comeback, particularly through the skill of Sophie Egbaran in the second half. However, Tchine kept the scoreboard ticking to give Pulse the title. Pulse will open their NSL campaign on 16 March, while Leeds' season begins on 14 March against the Birmingham Panthers. Group stage: Birmingham Panthers 13-15 London Mavericks Nottingham Forest 13-22 Manchester Thunder Leeds Rhinos 12-17 Cardiff Dragons Loughborough Lightning 16-16 London Pulse Manchester Thunder 20-14 Birmingham Panthers London Mavericks 15-29 Nottingham London Pulse 13-16 Leeds Rhinos Cardiff Dragons 15-18 Loughborough Lightning Birmingham Panthers 16-18 Nottingham Forest Manchester Thunder 17-12 London Mavericks Leeds Rhinos 12-11 Loughborough Lightning Cardiff Dragons 7-15 London Pulse Semi-finals: Manchester Thunder 16-17 London Pulse Nottingham 13-15 Leeds Rhinos Final: London Pulse 20-15 Leeds Rhinos
