Language exchange with students: Andhra kids to learn Punjabi, says Punjab education minister Harjot Bains

Chandigarh: The students of Andhra Pradesh govt schools will learn the basics of the Punjabi language under a five-day exchange programme to promote cultural exchange, linguistic diversity, and foster national unity, announced Punjab minister of school education Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday. Bains said Punjab and Andhra Pradesh had been paired under the programme as per directives from the Union ministry of education's department of school education and literacy. As part of the exchange, students from classes VI to X in Punjab govt schools will learn the basics of Telugu, while Andhra Pradesh govt schools will reciprocate by teaching Punjabi to their students. The clarification came amid Punjab-based Teachers' Democratic Front slamming the state govt over sending Punjabi students to Andhra Pradesh to learn Telugu. The minister said this pan-India initiative has seen diverse state pairings, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh with Kerala, Uttarakhand with Karnataka, Haryana with Telangana, Rajasthan with Assam, Gujarat with Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra with Odisha, Goa with Jharkhand, Delhi with Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh with Manipur and Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, and Bihar with Tripura and Mizoram, showcasing the programme's extensive reach and cultural exchange potential. He slammed those who rush to the media for headlines without proper understanding of any issue and reminded them of the Punjab govt's bold step to counter CBSE's attempt to marginalise regional languages.
