‘Woman And Child' Director Saeed Roustaee Hints At Fears Of Arrest In Iran Over Cannes Film: 'I Hope I'll Be Able To Go Back Safely'
Saeed Roustaee has revealed that he wonders whether he will be arrested on his return to his native Iran following the premiere of his female-focused drama Mother and Child in Competition in Cannes this week. 'The last time I went back, my passport was confiscated. I hope I'll be able to go back safely. I don't know whether I'll be arrested but I certainly hope not,' the Iranian director told the press conference for the film on Friday. As well as being slapped with a travel ban, he was sentenced to six-month prison sentence and a five-year shooting ban, which were commuted on appeal. Roustaee has returned to the festival with the legal permits in place, and a film shot in adherence with the regime's stipulation that women must appear on screen with a hijab head covering, regardless of whether the scene is in a public place or private setting. This move has drawn criticism from parts of the Iranian filmmaking community in the light of the Women Life Freedom movement calling for democracy for women in Iran, and Roustaee faced tough questions at the press conference, with one journalist asking him if he was self-censoring. Roustaee replied his storytelling followed in a tradition of other Iranian directors who have sought to make social films over the last 45 years, implying since the event of the Islamic Republic in 1979. 'I don't know, whether I am self-censoring myself. I'm 35 years old. I've lived in Iran for 35 years. I'm familiar with Iranian cinema and I'm a result of this social cinema that we've had for the last 45 years. I'm following in the footsteps of other Iranian film makers. This is a tradition I've inherited,' he said. 'I don't know to what extent I indulge in self-censorship, but I do make my films in Iran, and I would like Iranians to be able to go to see my movies in a movie theaters in Iran. So, no doubt I'm careful about certain things to ensure that my film will be released.' Quizzed about the harsh vision of Iranian society that his film depicts, with a glimmer of hope at the end, Roustaee said: ' If my films are bitter, that reflects Iranian society, if Iranian society was very well and happy, then I would make a portrait of that society.' Bi Gan's ‘Resurrection' Hits Cannes With 7-Minute Ovation At World Premiere
Bi Gan was back at the Cannes Film Festival with his new movie Resurrection after his Un Certain Regard entry Long Day's Journey into Night in 2018. The world premiere of the Chinese filmmaker's latest movie received a seven-minute ovation at the Grand Thèâtre Lumière. There are some who rebel against this by living only in a dream world. In a prologue, one woman — 'gifted with the power to perceive these illusions for what they truly are,' according to the Cannes logline — goes into this latter world to pull one of the dreamers out. Thailand's Engfa Waraha & Dream Thanika Jenjesda Want ‘Lady Bee' To Re-Define The Female Gaze In Thai Filmmaking — Cannes Studio
Upcoming Thai film Lady Bee presents a re-imagining of the 1960s Thai novel 'The Story of Jan Dara,' with popular singer-actress Engfa Waraha headlining the film as the enigmatic Lady Boonleung. In an interview at Deadline's Cannes studio, Waraha, alongside the film's co-writer and co-director Dream Thanika Jenjesda, shared that they are excited to present a new adaptation of the story — which has been remade before — from a female perspective for the first time. This is my second role and I'm under pressure to do my best. I want to challenge myself as an actor and not just a star.' Waraha won the Best Actress prize at the 2025 Thailand Box Office Awards for her role in family drama feature The Paradise of Thorns. Besides acting, Waraha has also ventured into singing, appearing in the seventh season of The Voice Thailand. She revealed that the late legendary Thai singer Pumpuang is her biggest singing inspiration. On her singing career, Waraha said, 'It was one of my biggest dreams and whenever I received good opportunities, I did my best to be the best I could.' Set to begin principal photography in late-2025, Lady Bee follows Lady Boonleung, a woman unbound by the morality or power structures of her time and driven by a yearning for connection. 'My goal is not to be too vogue, vocal or preachy about it,' said co-writer and co-director Jenjesda. 'In Thailand, we're still a little bit conservative, a little bit suppressed in these of having male-dominated leading roles.' She named directors Sofia Coppola and Wim Wenders among her filmmaking inspirations. Lady Bee will also be co-directed by Rutaiwan Wongsirasawad (Dalah), with Julien Favre also onboard as co-writer. Pantham Thongsang will produce the film. Looking ahead, Waraha has set her sights overseas too. 'I want more opportunities at an international level, perhaps taking a role alongside a Hollywood movie star or well-known international stars,' said Waraha. 'I want to challenge my English-speaking abilities.' Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke's zany romantic drama A Useful Ghost has won the top prize at Cannes Critics' Week. The feature, which is the first Thai film to play in the parallel section for a number of years, won the inaugural AMI Paris Grand Prize. Quebecois actor Théodore Pellerin won the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for his performance in Pauline Loquès's Nino, about a young drifter, who spends three days wandering the streets after losing the keys to his apartment. Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for short film was won by Randa Maroufi's L'mina, about an unofficial coal mining town in Morocco. In collateral prizes, Shih-Ching Tsou's Left-Handed Girl won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution, which will support the French release of the film by Le Pacte. The SACD Award for best screenplay went to director Guillermo Galoe and Victor Alonso-Berbel for Sleepless City, on which they took co-writing credits. The Voice Season 26 will build on over ten years of the show and 25 seasons' worth of talent. The reality singing competition will feature a new grouping of coaches for Season 26, two of whom are completely new to the red chairs. Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé will join veteran coaches Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani for their turn in the blind audition singing show, which has produced artists like Cassadee Pope, Brynn Cartelli, and Carter Rubin who all won their respective seasons.
