Manny Pacquiao returns to boxing to fight Mario Barrios for world title
Manny Pacquiao has officially announced that he will come back to boxing and fight against Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight world title. The Filipino boxer retired from the sport almost four years ago, after a legendary career. During his professional boxing journey, the athlete had completed 72 matches and became the only boxer in history to achieve world titles in eight different weight divisions. He gained success from flyweight all the way to super welterweight. This news is a big surprise to all of his boxing fans, for he is truly regarded as one of the sport's most acclaimed athletes. In a social media post, Pacquiao shared that he's back, ' …On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas… Let's make history! #TeamPacquiao 🇵🇭' Netizens expressed their thoughts about Pacquiao's return in the comments section. One commenter remarked, 'Manny, win or lose, hang it up after this fight. There's nothing to prove. You're already a legend. Your health is your wealth.' Another showed his concern and said, 'I don't like this. I don't like this at all. I am genuinely concerned for Manny's well-being. It's been too long since he last fought, and his reflexes will not be there as they once were, no matter how much he trains. This needs to be stopped.' More netizens commented their support and said, 'Sending my love and energy, boss… bring back the good old days! 🔥☄️🥊' Pacquiao's boxing history Pacquiao won 62 out of his 72 professional fights during his peak moments, with 39 being knockout wins. The boxer's last appearance inside the boxing ring ended with a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas, and this cost him his WBA title. Ever since his last match, Pacquiao changed his career from sports to politics. He served as a senator in the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. He also ran for president but was unsuccessful. Recently, he also lost in his latest attempt to return to politics. On the other hand, Mario Barrios defended his WBC welterweight title after a fierce match against Abel Ramos in November 2023. To make the match even more challenging, Barrios also defeated Ugas, the boxer who won against Pacquiao in his last defeat in 2021, and took the WBA welterweight title. With his exceptional boxing skills, Barrios is now regarded as a formidable opponent who will pose a difficult match to Pacquiao as he returns to the ring.

Manny Pacquiao, 46, confirms controversial boxing return against 29-year-old welterweight champion Mario Barrios - amid fears over the veteran's health in the bout
Manny Pacquiao has confirmed his controversial return to boxing after four years away from the sport. The legendary Filipino will face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, 29, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 19. Pacquiao was last in action in 2021, losing on points against Yordenis Ugas. He looked a shadow of his former self in that performance. He announced the news in a social media post on Wednesday, writing:' I'm back. On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. 'Let's make history! #TeamPacquiao.' Pacquiao re-entered the welterweight rankings earlier this month, prompting concern given his last professional showing four years ago. The former eight-division champion has slotted back into the rankings at No 5 in the 147lbs division. Pacquiao has competed in exhibition events since his last professional defeat, albeit at a completely different level. He produced a lacklustre showing against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo last July and there are fears his body simply cannot hold up at elite level anymore. But WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently confirmed the comeback was on, saying: 'At this time, Mario Barrios is going to fight Manny Pacquiao in July. 'That's a tremendous fight. Manny Pacquiao's first [world] title was at flyweight, with the WBC. 'And [now] he wants to retire as the WBC champion, so he's fighting in the welterweight division.' The man himself insisted last year than he can still compete with the younger generation despite his age. 'I made history at 40 beating Keith Thurman, and I feel at 45, I have a lot left in the game as I haven't taken a lot of punishment over the last few years,' he told ESPN. Amir Khan is among those who fear for Pacquiao and he told Mail Sport: 'I mean, it shocked me a little bit. 'I know Barrios really well — he's still young, he still has that fire in his belly, and he will give him big problems. Barrios has been looking really good in his last couple of fights, whereas Manny obviously lost his last fight. 'With Manny, I think he's way past that age where we don't want him to get hurt. He's always one punch away from getting hurt. He's only getting older. I'm sure he's nearly touching 45 or something'. 'When told Pacquiao was actually 46, Khan said: 'Wow. So almost 50. Older than I thought. So even more to the point.'

Create Account Pacquiao's team made the announcement on Thursday, just hours after he conceded defeat in a bid for another seat in the Philippines Senate. 'His comeback aligns with his scheduled induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June, capping a storied sports legacy that continues to inspire millions of Filipino people,' the press statement said. It was not clear if the fight at a Las Vegas venue to be decided is a one-off or if 46-year-old Pacquiao is coming out of a four-year retirement to box full-time. Asked to clarify, his communications officer Joey Hernal said the media should wait for Pacquiao's own press conference. In the statement, Pacquiao promised to continue serving the country despite losing in the mid-term elections. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'I may not have won in my run for the Senate, but I am totally grateful for each vote, each prayer and support,' Pacquaio said in Filipino. He even thanked voters who did not choose him because 'you were part of the process to strengthen our democracy.' He said he remains committed to serve the country. 'The fight continues. Service continues. For God. For the country. For each Filipino,' he added. Pacquiao previously served as a senator from 2016-22. He then made a bid for the presidency in 2022 elections but failed. In the mid-term elections on Monday, Pacquiao vied for a second stint in the Senate but finished 18th in voting when only the top 12 made it. He joins the Canastota, New York-based Hall of Fame next month as one of the most decorated boxers in history. A world champion in eight divisions from flyweight to super welterweight, he appeared to end a 26-year career in 2021 with a record of 62-8-2 (39 KOs). Barrios retained the WBC welterweight belt with a draw against Abel Ramos last November in Arlington, Texas. Check out our sports section for the latest news and analysis.
