International stars to get big venue discount for booking Aussie acts on stadium and arena tours

International artists who book Aussie acts on their tours will get a discount of up to $20,000 on venue hire of NSW stadiums and arenas hire as the Minns Government boosts the coveted opportunity to get homegrown music back on the big stages. Getting a support slot on superstar tours to play in front of tens of thousands of fans is a game-changer for Aussie musicians. Rising rockers Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are now touring America with Pearl Jam after opening for them on their stadium gigs in November while Kita Alexander has a hit on her hands with her latest single Press Pause after performing on the Dua Lipa tour. Chart-topping rockers Ball Park Music will score invaluable exposure to a new audience when they open for Oasis at their sold-out stadium shows in November. 'In our career to date, we've had - and continue to get - great support slots where we've seen a direct growth in our audience that often translates to a boost in our number of long-term fans, none of which would have discovered us without that exposure,' Ball Park Music's Sam Cromack said. The initiative will offer promoters booking bigger venues including Accor Stadium, Allianz Stadium, CommBank Stadium, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle Entertainment Centre, the Sydney Cricket Ground and WIN Stadium and Entertainment Centre a $20,000 venue hire discount and $5000 at the Sydney Opera House in return for choosing a local act to open the show. The NSW Government is the first to adopt 'Michael's Rule', named after the late artist manager Michael McMartin whose passion was to see Aussie talent get the big stadium gigs to boost their audiences. The career of the Hoodoo Gurus, who were managed by McMartin for almost 40 years, took off after supporting Lou Reed in 1984 and in the 1990s, You Am I played Australia shows with Soundgarden before touring the US with them. 'This will help Aussie artists take an even bigger stage on international playlists, skewing the Spotify algorithm to mix in more Aussie tracks and put NSW up in lights as a home of great music,' Premier Chris Minns said. Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy John Graham has introduced a raft of measures to rebuild the state's live music has added 302 venues by extending trading hours. The Government also boosted the cap on concerts at Allianz Stadium with all available slots now on hold by local promoters for more tours to be announced later this year. But Graham said the Australian music industry remains in crisis, with only three local acts on the 2024 ARIA top 100. 'The rise of streaming is flooding our market with American music and creating a roadblock for NSW artists trying to break through. By adopting Michael's Rule we will get more local acts on to the big stage,' Graham said. 'While local shows are suffering, fans are still paying the big money for big international acts. Michael's Rule will help our local artists capture that attention.' Teen Jesus singer Anna Ryan called on other states to wave the carrot of a venue discount at the big international acts. 'We received the news (about Michael's Rule) at the airport on our way to Nashville to support Pearl Jam so we are proof that having Australian artists on international tours at home really does impact careers,' Ryan said. 'Hopefully other states will join the call!'

‘The Righteous Gemstones' Season 4 review: The most divine finale to Danny McBride‘s megachurch masterpiece

Danny McBride created one of the best and most underrated comedy shows in recent years, The Righteous Gemstones, which sadly is coming to an end after Season 4, which premieres Sunday, March 9 (at 10:00 p.m. ET on Crave in Canada, HBO and Max in the U.S.). Starring McBride himself, along with John Goodman, Walton Goggins, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, Tony Cavalero, Cassidy Freeman and Tim Baltz, the upcoming season epitomizes what it means to 'go out on top.' A show built on a satire of evangelicalism and televangelists, every single season of Righteous Gemstones has succeeded, being as funny if not funnier than what we saw before. Simply put, McBride is a genius and Righteous Gemstones is what we all want comedy TV shows to be. Unfortunately for Righteous Gemstones fan, we can't actually reveal anything specific about the first episode of the season, because even one detail would be a spoiler that would ruin everything quite quickly. Very broadly, because we've also seen a few things in the season's trailer, the family patriarch Eli Gemstone (Goodman) is living on a boat in Florida, trying to figure out what he wants with his life. That may mean spending some intimate time with a woman, years after the death of his wife Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles). But for his children, Jesse (McBride), Judy (Patterson) and Kelvin (Devine), that's an absolute no. We've already gotten a sneak peek of Seann William Scott, Arden Myrin and Megan Mullally in the season. Mullally plays Lori, who was Aimee-Leigh's best friend, and Scott plays her son Corey, who grew up with the Gemstones, and is particularly good friends with Jesse. Myrin is Corey's wife, Jana. Meanwhile, Kelvin is being recognized for his work on his new project with Keefe (Cavalero), Prism, that looks at the bible 'in a different light,' and we spend a lot more time with our favourite duo in Season 4. Of course, Kelvin's older brother Jesse doesn't like the added attention on his younger brother, but Jesse is also still battling the Gemstones' biggest competition, Vance Simkins (Stephen Dorff). Additionally, while in Season 3 we saw Judy and her husband BJ (Baltz) have some issues in their marriage, specifically when she was cheating on him with guitarist Stephen (Stephen Schneider), BJ's newfound interest in pole dancing leads to the next moment Judy and BJ have to work through. We can't forget Baby Billy Freeman (Goggins), with one of the funniest moments from the Righteous Gemstones Season 4 trailer being Billy writing a TV show, initially called 'Teen Jesus,' which he shortens to 'Teenjus.' We won't spoil how that goes, but the trailer doesn't give away the funniest parts. There's a lot more to come. And fans who have been watching from the beginning will remember Baby Billy's nude moment that introduced his character in Season 1, Episode 3. We'll tease that there's a lot more nudity to come from Billy in Season 4. There's a lot to love about Righteous Gemstones, but to put it simply, the show just leans into the fun. You can get the sense just by watching it that everyone behind the show is having a good time and I think it's fair to say that contributes to why it remains one of the most well-crafted shows. Even though we're on Season 4 the comedy still feels fresh, and McBride has continued to go down a path that's incredibly different from everything else on TV and new to streaming sites. But Righteous Gemstones also doesn't shy away from diving deeper into each of its characters, giving us perfectly timed emotional, vulnerable, tender and even darker moments, lingering just long enough to make the next joke hit even harder. It's masterful work from the show's writers and directors, which include McBride, Patterson, David Gordon Green and Jody Hill, among others. One thing that's been incredibly underrated in Righteous Gemstones is the way the show uses flashbacks. It's a divisive device, often used as a gimmick in shows and, more often than not, it's a more distracting than effective storytelling tool. This show has its flashbacks dialed in, even in Season 4, including seeing the Gemstones when Eli's children were kids and teens, as we've seen in previous seasons. While everyone is particularly aware of the genius that is Goggins right now, with The White Lotus Season 3, on Righteous Gemstones every cast member, even actors who play smaller parts, execute with perfection. Devine, Cavalero and Baltz are particular highlights of the season, and the newer cast members, including Mullally and Scott, are a perfect fit with this already impressive group. I haven't been this sad about a show ending in a long time, but watching all nine episodes proved that McBride absolutely stuck the landing. While I'd love to have new episodes of Righteous Gemstones to watch forever, McBride is definitely going out on top with this show. With an impressive legacy, a great cast and guest stars, unique stories and outrageous fun, God bless the Gemstones.
