OC Parks welcomes visitors to Old Orange County Courthouse for a day of art and music

The Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana is one of the county's most iconic historic landmarks. Dedicated in 1901, the restored 30,000-square foot building is no longer an active courthouse, but it does still serve the community by offering interpretive programs, art shows and performing civil marriage ceremonies. This weekend, OC Parks invites the public to make special memories at the Old Courthouse. On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., OC Parks will host 'Spring into Summer,' a new music and art event suitable for all ages, with the chance to learn about all of OC Park's upcoming summer events and programs. 'Spring into Summer welcomes all to enjoy an afternoon of fun and entertainment,' said County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento in a news release. 'I am excited to invite the community to join this celebration that will include live music, art and history.' Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the courthouse lawn for live music performances from The Como la Flor Band: A Tribute to Selena, fronted by Tina Aldana who replicates the look, sound and moves of the famous Tejano Queen, and passionate Latin orchestra, Yari Moré Latin Band. Craft workshops, sketch drawing demonstrations and a paleontology booth are planned, along with a special exhibit at the Third Floor Gallery titled, 'Backyard Kingdom: Orange County's Natural World.' Families can explore Orange County's diverse ecosystems and maybe even get inspired to explore the outdoors with OC Parks, which currently manages nearly 60,000 acres of parks, historical and coastal facilities and open space. Historically, the courthouse has stood as a witness to local government proceedings that shaped early Orange County. The original building was established on land the county bought from the founder of Santa Ana, William Spurgeon; its first use was as a jail. In 1900, the Orange County Board of Supervisors commissioned Los Angeles architect Charles Strange to design the courthouse we see today. Several important cases were heard in its courtroom over the years. After the county's courthouse operations moved to new digs, the old building underwent a multi-phased restoration project that began in 1983. It was reopened to the public as a museum and historic landmark in 1992. Since that transformation, the beautiful wood courtroom has served as a backdrop to Hollywood films like 'Catch Me if You Can,' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, and 'Legally Blonde,' starring Reese Witherspoon. OC Parks offers free tours of the Old Orange County Courthouse Monday through Friday by appointment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the Old Courthouse Museum is always free. Free parking will be offered on Saturday. 'Free admission and parking allow residents from near and far to attend, become more familiar with the many summer programs offered by OC Parks, and will also highlight Orange County's Historic Courthouse,' said Sarmiento. 'Spring Into Summer' will take place at the Old Orange County Courthouse at 211 W. Santa Ana Blvd. in Santa Ana on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free. Free parking is available at P8/Transit Tower parking structure at 301 W. 5th St., Santa Ana.

Award-winning doc ‘Selena y Los Dinos' has been acquired by Netflix

'Selena y Los Dinos,' the latest documentary film about the life of Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla, has been acquired by Netflix. The film is currently scheduled to begin streaming in winter 2025. The movie, directed by Isabel Castro, features original VHS footage taken by Selena's older sister, Suzette, and is interspersed with present-day interviews with family and friends. Netflix announced its acquisition in a Tuesday press release. 'Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before,' Castro shared in the release. 'I am deeply grateful to her family for their trust and support throughout this journey, and I can't wait for a global audience to experience the magic, heart and community that Selena gave to all of us.' Suzette also shared her enthusiasm about the scope of the partnership with Netflix in the Tuesday announcement, stating, 'Grateful to have a platform that helps bring Selena's story to fans around the world.' This is not the first time that the Quintanilla family has collaborated with the streaming giant. They worked with Netflix to help create 'Selena: The Series' — a scripted retelling of Selena's childhood, rise to fame and death starring Christian Serratos as the Texas singer. It was after working as an executive producer on the Netflix series that Suzette consulted her lawyer about making her own documentary. 'There's some things that you just want to hold on to and not share with everyone,' Suzette said at the documentary's 2025 Sundance Film Festival premiere. 'I was always taking the pictures, always with the camera. And look how crazy it is, that I'm sharing it with all of you so many years later.' The documentary surfaces footage from performances in which Selena subverts the idea of the well-manicured image that the Quintanilla family has constantly put out of the singer in the 30 years since her death. It also captures, in real time, the evolution of a bold new identity growing among Latino youth in the 1980s, encapsulated in Los Dinos' cultural hybridity. The film was awarded with a special jury prize for archival storytelling at the renowned movie gathering at Sundance. The jury made note of how the feature 'transported us to a specific time and place, evoking themes of family, heritage, love and adolescence.' So badly were people clamoring to view the movie that the organizers of Sundance pulled it from its online platform. The film had fallen victim to a number of copyright infringements as eager fans were uploading clips from it to social media platforms. This was the first time that Sundance had removed a feature during the festival. De Los assistant editor Suzy Exposito and Times staff writer Mark Olsen contributed to this report.

George Strait Mourns the Passing of Iconic Country Music Singer, 73

Without Johnny Rodriguez, would there be a ? George certainly doesn't think so. On Monday, George paid tribute to his fellow country legend, who died last week at the age of 73. In his sweet message, the 'King of Country Music' thanked Johnny for paving the way. 'Norma [Straight, his wife] and I are so sad about Johnny's passing,' wrote George on a May 12 Instagram Story. 'He was an inspiration to me from the beginning.' 'Being from South Texas myself, it gave me so much hope knowing that he had become such a huge success,' continued George, 'that maybe there was a hope for a guy like me.' Juan Raoul Davis "Johnny" Rodriguez died on May 9. Growing up in Sabinal, Texas, Johnny helped bring the Tejano sound to the masses, infusing country music with Latin sounds. He hit it big in the 1970s and '80s with songs like 'Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through),' 'I Just Can't Get Her Out of My Mind,' and 'Love Put a Song In My Heart." George, who hails from Pearsall, Texas, remembered Johnny as 'a great talent,' before adding, 'God bless his family, friends and fans. You'll be missed, amigo.' Johnny died in San Antonio from health complications. His daughter shared a message on social media, saying her father was 'not only a legendary musician whose artistry touched millions around the world, but also a deeply loved husband, father, uncle, and brother whose warmth, humor, and compassion shaped the lives of all who knew him. Recently, the 'All My Exes Live In Texas' singer caused some concern among his fans. George recently kicked off his tour with Chris Stapleton, and a clip of his performance—where he sat down and barely played the guitar in his lap—had fans talking.

Selena Scores Another Posthumous Chart Win

30 years after her passing — almost to the day — Selena scores a new hit on a Billboard ranking. The Queen of Cumbia remains one of the most successful Tejano musicians of all time in the U.S., and her legacy continues to expand, thanks to special re-releases and anniversaries that remind the masses of her impact. Selena frequently appears on Billboard's various tallies, sometimes with the same title, and at other times with a variety of songs and collections. This frame, a pair of full-lengths from the late star secure spots on the charts, as one holds steady while another returns. Remarkably, her album Entre A Mi Mundo even lands on a list where she's only appeared a handful of times, and the singer scores another posthumous win. Entre A Mi Mundo debuts on the Vinyl Albums chart this week, Billboard's ranking of the bestselling full-lengths on wax throughout the U.S. Selena's effort enters at No. 14. It earns the seventh-highest start on the list, landing behind popular names like Ghost, D4vd, Rilo Kiley, and even Jeff Goldblum. What makes Selena's performance so special is that the collection is not new, it's just new to this tally. The project was originally released as the superstar's third album back in mid-1992. While she was already immensely popular within certain communities, this effort helped catapult her to even greater fame. It peaked at No. 97 on the Billboard 200 and climbed into the top 10 on several other Billboard rosters, including hitting No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Albums list. Entre A Mi Mundo was recently pressed on vinyl for the first time ever. Fans were offered a choice between a standard red wax record and a picture disc, which was made available exclusively through the Universal Music Latino website. Though the album was a bestseller when it was first released, vinyl was not in demand at the time, as it had faded from mainstream popularity following its heyday in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, and the format's comeback had not yet begun. This latest win marks just Selena's third appearance on the Vinyl Albums chart. As it opens at No. 14, Entre A Mi Mundo becomes her only effort to land on the tally without hitting No. 1, as both Ones and Amor Prohibido previously spent one frame each leading the ranking. Alongside its vinyl debut, Entre A Mi Mundo also returns to two other Billboard rankings, thanks to its vinyl-related sales uptick. It reenters the Top Album Sales list at No. 35, marking a new all-time peak thanks to a little more than 2,500 copies purchased, according to Luminate. Simultaneously, it returns to the Top Latin Albums roster in the same position, No. 35, though that isn't a new best, as the title has previously soared to No. 4.
