Heatwave grips Telangana, temperatures breach 45-degree mark
As the heat wave intensified in Telangana, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad Centre, has issued an orange alert for Adilabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Komarambheem Asifabad, Jayashanker Bhupalpally, Mancherial, Mulugu, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, and Rajanna Sircilla districts for Friday. These districts may observe temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius. All other districts have been issued a yellow warning.
On Wednesday, four locations in Telangana breached the 45-degree mark, according to the Telangana Planning Development Society (TGPDS).

Special Chief Secretary (disaster management) Arvind Kumar has urged people to avoid direct sun exposure between noon and 4 pm and remain hydrated.
'Temperatures >40 deg expected until April 25 … it is advised to take necessary care in these areas/districts – pl avoid direct sun exposure during 12 noon till 4 pm if possible, cover your head / carry umbrellas/ caps & remain hydrated / have lots of drinking water,' he posted on X.
K Nagarathna, Director of IMD Hyderabad, told that northern districts will experience a heatwave while severe heat conditions will prevail in the rest of the state. 'There are north-westerly dry winds blowing across the Telangana region,' she said.
On Wednesday, the highest temperature of 45.3 degrees was recorded at Ch Kondur in Nizamabad district, followed by 45.2 degrees at Tamsi in Adilabad. Buttapur in the Nirmal district and Bheemini in the Mancherial district recorded 45.1 degrees and 45 degrees respectively.
As per the Telangana Planning Development Society (TGPDS) data, which has over 1000 automated weather stations across the state, six locations recorded between 44 degrees and 45 degrees, while 11 locations recorded between 43 and 44 degrees Celsius.
In Greater Hyderabad, Moosarambagh, Uppal, and Bowenpally recorded the highest maximum temperature of 42.1 degrees on Wednesday. The state recorded a district-wise average maximum temperature of 42.1 degrees Celsius.
Telangana had recently declared heatwave as a state-specific disaster and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family of victims dying due to heatwave/sunstroke.
Authorities have put in place certain norms for assistance from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in case of deaths due to heat wave, sunstroke, and sunburn.
Firstly, the authorities have to ensure that the death is caused due to heatwave as defined by the IMD. Also, if the deceased happens to be a farmer enrolled under the Rhythu Bima scheme, the family can avail one of the two ex-gratia — Rhythu Bima or ex-gratia due to heatwave, whichever is higher.
As a procedure, the district collector shall ensure that the District Medical Health Officer (DMHO) or the authorised officers at the district level shall diagnose that the death was based on the history of exposure to high ambient temperature and the reasonable exclusion of other causes of hyperthermia.
