Hyderabad: Irrigation and civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Monday assured farmers that the Congress govt made arrangements for the procurement of 70.13 lakh metric tonnes of yasangi (rabi crop) paddy, with all necessary infrastructure, including gunny bags, tarpaulin covers, calipers, and dryers being made available near procurement centres.
Speaking at 'Telangana Rythu Mahotsav' in Nizamabad, the irrigation minister said 8,329 procurement centres were proposed. The programme began after mild tension prevailed for some time at the venue as some stalls and welcome arches were damaged when the helicopter carrying three ministers — Uttam and Tummala Nageswara Rao and Jupally Krishna Rao — landed near the venue. A couple of police personnel sustained minor injuries. However, officials said everything was brought under control, and the programme went off peacefully with the ministers and TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud addressing the gathering.
Uttam assured the people of the undivided Nizamabad district that the Congress govt would soon revive the long-delayed
Pranahita-Chevella project
, originally intended to benefit large parts of north Telangana. The govt would also take up desiltation and dredging of Nizam Sagar and SRSP projects to bring an additional one lakh acres under cultivation by reviving these major irrigation sources.
However, TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goudsaid
Telangana farmers
have been doing agriculture for centuries and need not learn from neighbouring state counterparts. BRS demanded an apology from Mahesh Goud to Telangana farmers.
