17 Dead in Fire in India

Israa Farhan At least 17 people, including six children under the age of five, have died following a devastating fire in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Sunday. Local authorities say the fire, which was reportedly caused by an electrical short circuit, broke out on the ground floor of a multi-story building and quickly spread to the upper levels. The Telangana State Fire Services and Disaster Response team confirmed that around 12 fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, which engulfed the building before emergency crews could fully contain it. The state's Minister of Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, who visited the scene, told local media that preliminary investigations suggest an electrical fault was the likely cause. Rescue operations were conducted throughout the day, and authorities are continuing to identify the victims and assess the damage. The tragedy has raised fresh concerns about fire safety regulations in urban buildings across India, particularly in densely populated areas where outdated wiring and limited emergency exits are common.
