‘Youth must step up'

Inspiring future leaders: Anwar delivering his keynote address at the event. — AZLINA ABDULLAH/The Star YOUTH empowerment through holistic education will be central to Malaysia's progress, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister emphasised the vital role of private universities in preparing youths to meet national challenges, especially in fields like digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI) and the energy transition. 'Why do we place such importance on the younger generation? Because the type of training, the expertise, the capacity to effect change, and the willingness to adopt new disciplines – we have to depend on you,' he told students. 'You can't expect people in my generation to be as fast, to assimilate and acquire knowledge and expertise at the same level, particularly in new sciences and disciplines. 'That's why Management and Science University (MSU) and many other premier institutions are considered by the government as part of our team – to provide opportunities and instil discipline and scholarship among students,' he said during his 'Temu Anwar IPTS' session with higher education students at MSU on May 5. Anwar also said education should not be limited to personal gain – it must be grounded in ethics and a sense of national responsibility. Malaysia's future, he reiterated, depends on a generation that combines technical skills with strong moral values and civic consciousness. 'The assimilation and acquisition of knowledge are critical for your future, your family, your society and your country. 'To acquire knowledge to be comfortable in life is not the end (goal). We want to acquire and assimilate knowledge to disseminate what is just and true,' he said. Speaking to some 4,000 students, the event included an open Q&A session, where students posed questions to the Prime Minister on issues such as economic inequality, student involvement and government accountability. One student proposed establishing forums to include youth input and participation in programmes tied to Malaysia's Asean chairmanship this year, as well as reinstating e-wallet aid to help offset rising living costs. Anwar welcomed both suggestions, directing the Higher Education Ministry to enhance student engagement and expressing openness to expanding financial relief mechanisms. 'We'll consider the e-wallet idea. If we can add a little, maybe we can add more – for books, e-wallets, and so on,' he said. Meanwhile, he also said the government would look into ensuring the prices for land transport are reasonable, and passengers are not charged exorbitant fares during festive periods – especially students studying and living within Peninsular Malaysia. He was responding to a student who suggested that the government extend FLYSiswa – which offers subsidised flights – to cover land transport for students in Peninsular Malaysia. Anwar said the FLYSiswa initiative – currently focused on Sabah and Sarawak due to high airfares, especially during festive seasons – could be expanded after discussions with Transport Minister Anthony Loke. 'Why do we give some preference to Sabah and Sarawak? It's expensive, particularly during festive periods. So we chose to support them – at least to ease part of their burden,' he said. The FLYSiswa initiative was announced under Budget 2024, to assist underprivileged students flying domestically between Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan in returning to their hometowns and get back to their varsities for a new semester.

PM Anwar Calls For More Domestic Consumption To Mitigate Impact Of US Tariffs

SHAH ALAM, May 5 (Bernama) -- The government is committed to safeguarding the country's economy through a pragmatic approach, such as boosting domestic consumption, to navigate US tariff uncertainties. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also the finance minister, said one of the measures taken to mitigate the US tariff impact has been to direct public sector buildings to source their materials locally. "US President Donald Trump said no solar (energy products) to be exported to the United States because there are Chinese companies based here, but there are other countries (to sell them to); (also) our instruction is that all schools, universities, hospitals use Malaysian made solar panels, so that we can partly mitigate a potential problem we may face," he said during the 'Temu Anwar IPTS' dialogue session at the Management and Science University (MSU ) here today.

We are also currently fast-tracking the (free trade) agreement with the European Union (EU),' he added. Earlier today, the prime minister, during a Special Parliamentary Meeting in the Dewan Rakyat on US tariffs, expressed confidence that Malaysia's strong economic fundamentals will enable the country to navigate global uncertainties caused by US tariffs. He stressed that structural reforms introduced under the MADANI Economy framework will strengthen the country's ability to withstand global economic challenges and stay prepared for future uncertainties.

Anwar urges local consumption as US tariffs impact global economy, says Malaysia must stay independent

SHAH ALAM, May 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged Malaysians to buy more local products in response to US President Donald Trump's new tariff policies impacting the global economy. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said that by buying more Malaysian products, the country can mitigate potential challenges it may face. 'You either become virtually helpless, or gain from this. You sir, you suggested something smart. What? We try and use our local expertise,' he said during a dialogue session with private institution students during the 'Temu Anwar IPTS' event at the Management and Science University (MSU) here. 'President Trump said 'no solar to be exported to America' because there are Chinese companies based here, but there are other companies. So that's why our instruction is (for) all schools, universities, hospitals (to) use Malaysian made solar panels. 'This means we can probably mitigate potential problems we may face. And then of course, buy local products as far as possible,' he added. Anwar's response came after a student from Universiti Tenaga Nasional suggested taking advantage of the tariffs to promote more local products. Anwar then said one of Malaysia's largest exports to the USA is the semiconductors sector. 'About 60 per cent of our products are exported, about RM130 billion. If they decided no from Malaysia, we may have a problem. But for now, semiconductor, E&E are excluded . 'Say if it is partly included, then we have to take measures on how to promote it here,' he said, adding that since taking over as Prime Minister, his role has been to open up new markets. In October last year, Malaysia was made a partner country in the Brics alliance, alongside its neighbours Thailand and Indonesia. This latest move appears to be part of Anwar's ongoing effort to keep Malaysia independent and non-aligned, both economically and geostrategically. Anwar said joining Brics would offer 'economic opportunities free from external pressures', adding that the alliance aims to strengthen the Global South — a term referring to developing and underdeveloped countries primarily located in the Southern Hemisphere.
