Binghamton DPW prepares parade route for Saturday

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Wednesday morning, Binghamton DPW was painting the road green, gearing up this weekend's Parade Day festivities. DPW crews have been out for the last two days, removing snow along the parade route, getting it ready for Saturday. This is the 57th year of Parade Day, hosted by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The parade itself begins at 1:30 at the corner of Fayette and Court Street, featuring several pipe bands, dancers, floats, and much more. Binghamton's Mayor Jared Kraham joined DPW crews this morning, and helped paint the Irish Green line down Court Street. Click here to find a list of parade day activities compiled by News 34. Auchinachie donates to $1,000 to Veteran's Canteen event

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Auchinachie donated $1,000 to a local veteran's program to cover the cost of coffee and donuts for two years. Twice a month, Saint Mary's of the Assumption Church in Binghamton hosts a Veteran's Canteen in the parking lot, outside of the VA Medical Clinic on Court Street. The canteen offers free coffee, donuts, and apples, for veterans, plus good conversation and camaraderie. The charitable branch of Auchinachie called Auchinachie CARES, donated $1,000 to the canteen project to pay for the next two years' worth of donuts. A coordinator of the event, Bernadette Mars says, many veterans live isolated, so the canteen is great way for them to get out and connect with others. 'The veterans that are a little bit older, and I think probably live alone, are the ones that linger for a long time. And so, our volunteer veterans will go sit with them on a bench and drink coffee and listen to their stories. And I think that's the biggest benefit really,' said Mars. Mars says Thursday's are usually the busiest. The canteen runs from May through October and comes together around Christmas time to hand out Christmas cards to the vets. You can donate to the canteen project and get involved by calling Saint Mary's Church at (607)723-5383. Miles Burnett launches campaign for Binghamton mayor

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Southside Binghamton native officially launched his campaign for mayor last night with a petition kickoff party. Democrat Miles Burnett hosted the gathering at Atomic Tom's on State Street Tuesday evening. Burnett says he has a diverse background in leadership, having worked for the New York City Council, as the Executive Director of a non-profit focused on business development and as Deputy Chief of Staff to State Senator Lea Webb. Burnett says he plans to focus on the local issues that truly impact residents' lives, including the housing crisis, public safety, youth services and small business. He also wants to do away with the blue garbage bags that he says is costing the city too much money. Burnett says he wants to build a better Binghamton for everyone. 'I was raised in a family of nurses and firefighters and police officers and teachers, all who taught me the value of public service and the meaning of community. A lot of the challenges that I saw growing up are still challenges that we're facing today. I think that I have the vision and the experience and the love for Binghamton that we need to fix those challenges,' said Burnett. Burnett says he already has hundreds of volunteers and dozens of interns. His supporters were signing petitions and picking up petition packets to help him qualify for the ballot in November. Current Mayor Republican Jared Kraham is expected to announce his re-election plans in the near future.
