Lenzing Pushes Fiber Innovation Forward with Tencel 2.2

Tencel lyocell as become a cornerstone of summer denim, prized for its breathability and softness. The Lenzing fiber is central to DL1961's DL Ultimate collection of soft denim. It's part of Lee's new performance-driven collection for men called Lee X. It's also featured in Pepe Jeans' collegiate-inspired summer tops and bottoms. Despite headwinds in the denim market, the maker of Refibra continues to drive innovation, building on its acclaimed technologies to meet evolving consumer demands. More from Sourcing Journal Industry Experts Weigh in on Winning Water-Saving Solutions Linen and Loose Fits Top Summer Denim Trends Material World: Still Burning Bras? You Can Bury Balena's In April, Lenzing rolled Tencel 2.2, a denser and coarser variant of traditional Tencel with less luster and a drier hand. Comparable to linen, Tencel 2.2 is a price and quality solution for denim mills working to navigate linen's price fluctuations and overcome inefficiency as linen can be difficult to control. In April, Lenzing showed fabrics using the new fiber in bottom and top weights by Artistic Milliners. The new fiber is also part of Lenzing's Application Innovation Collection (ALC), a seasonal round up of garments made by mill partners that showcase new ways to use the company's fiber technologies such as Ecovero, Tencel Modal and Indigo Color. Lenzing is seeing exciting applications of Ecovero jacquard, Tencel and pineapple fiber blends and 100 percent Tencel fabrics that are digitally printed. Here, Kilickan Tuncay, Lenzing's head of global business development – denim, shares insights on fiber innovation, sustainability challenges, and how Tencel and other Lenzing fibers are shaping the future of the industry. Why did Lenzing launch Tencel 2.2? Kilickan Tuncay: Linen prices have been high for some time, which prompted our Application Innovation Center to explore how we could achieve a linen-like look and feel using Tencel fibers. Through this research, we found that a blend of Tencel lyocell 2.2 dtex and short staple fibers—ideally recycled cotton—delivered the desired aesthetic and texture. How is the denim industry responding to Tencel 2.2? KT: Fiber ramp-ups are generally slow, as it takes time for the industry to become familiar with a new fiber. Typically, mills begin by conducting research and presenting the concept to brands. In turn, brands need to develop the right products and craft clear messages to communicate the value to the end consumer. Currently, we are in the mill research phase, and the feedback so far has been promising. The market has been stable for quite some time, so innovative stories like this tend to spark curiosity quickly. What are some examples of unique ways denim brands are using Lenzing fibers in their current products? KT: Right now, the 'bread and butter' of the market is authentic-looking wide-leg jeans with a soft hand feel. Since this silhouette doesn't require stretch, softness has become the key comfort feature that appeals to consumers—this puts Tencel denim in a leading position. Additionally, growing awareness around durability further supports the use of Tencel fibers, as they contribute to enhanced overall fabric strength. Several mills are using Lenzing Ecovero in their Fall/Winter 2026-2027 collection. Is demand for the fiber growing? Are there any fiber families that are gaining momentum in the denim market? KT: Lenzing Ecovero is a viscose fiber produced under stringent sustainability standards. While viscose presents some limitations in denim—particularly around strength retention after intensive laundry processes—it can still be used effectively in denim fabrics when blended in smaller proportions. There is ongoing interest in next-generation fibers for denim, but under current market conditions, scaling up is challenging. Although inquiries are strong, the path to wider adoption is slow due to strict price constraints and a general reluctance from brands to take risks. Many prefer to stay on the safe side rather than experiment with newer, less familiar options. Are tariffs and the confusion around affecting how your clients plan for future seasons? Are tariffs forcing Lenzing to make any strategy changes? KT: The ongoing tariff debate has further intensified an already unpredictable market environment. With conditions changing so rapidly, it's challenging to make firm plans. The best approach is to prepare for every possible scenario—which requires significant effort from every player in the supply chain. Lenzing is closely monitoring developments region by region and responding with as much agility as possible, given our role as a branded raw material supplier operating on a global scale. While this is certainly not an ideal environment for any company, Lenzing is committed to adapting—just as we have in the face of past challenges. What is your outlook on the denim market for the remainder of the year? KT: I believe most companies will remain in survival mode for the second half of the year, with major moves likely being avoided. Businesses will continue to play it safe, focusing primarily on product and price—each company will need to decide which of the two to prioritize. My hope is that sustainability doesn't slip further down the list of priorities. As an industry, we've made strong commitments in recent years, and it would be unfortunate to see those efforts compromised.

Crystal Denim's New Collection Highlights Circular and Climate Adaptive Design

Crystal Denim, the denim division of Crystal International Group, recently introduced CirClimate, a new concept that addresses circularity and performance during a time of extreme weather conditions. A combination of sustainable fibers and responsibly sourced trims are behind the 'climate adaptive' concept. More from Sourcing Journal Industry Experts Weigh in on Winning Water-Saving Solutions Lenzing Pushes Fiber Innovation Forward with Tencel 2.2 Industry Experts Weigh in on Winning Water-Saving Solutions CirClimate utilizes fabrics from Advance Denim made with 100 percent cellulosic fibers including Tencel and Eastman Naia Acetate, a bio-based fiber from sustainable wood pulp and recycled waste. The fabric is biodegradable, soft and durable. While traditional performance fabrics often rely on synthetic materials such as polyester, which can contribute to recycling issues, Crystal said sustainable materials are gaining traction, reducing environmental impact while enhancing durability. These advancements not only cater to the demands of eco-conscious consumers but also position denim as a versatile choice for everyday wear in a rapidly changing climate. The fabric's natural breathability makes it temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking for year-round comfort. The integration of functional and performance elements into denim is not merely a trend but a response to the evolving needs of consumers and environmental challenges, Crystal stated. 'We aim to bring more nature-based, eco-friendly collections to the industry. We are redefining denim to embody our dedication to integrating climate-adaptive design and sustainability performance. Our collection has passed temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking performance tests,' said Janet Lui, senior manager, product development at Crystal Denim. The CirClimate collection includes key pieces such as boxy fit denim Trucker jacket, high-waisted pleated wide-leg jeans, and relaxed jorts in white denim. The garments were designed for easy disassembly and compostability. For the collection, Crystal finished garments with 100 percent cotton threads, removable shank buttons and compostable packaging to promote recycling. The collection is now being promoted to Crystal's key customers, with the hope that brands will embrace 'the convergence of sustainability and functional needs.'

Massive Athleta sale slashes up to 75% off — 11 apparel deals I'd shop now

Although brat girl summer was technically last year, there's nothing stopping you from embracing the same themes of confidence and nonchalance this summer. With rising prices and tighter wallets, I've never been happier to see a huge Athleta sale to help usher in this carefree summer with fresh comfy apparel. For fans of light green like me, jump on the Athleta Salutation Stash 7/8 Legging for only $27. These leggings are usually $109, which means they're a whopping 75% off right now. If you'd rather go with classic black pants, the Allure High-Rise Jogger for $27 is nearly 75% off as well. And if you're looking to add more shorts, tanks, or sports bras to your workout apparel in addition to bottoms, Athleta has plenty of great discounted options right now. Shop the entire Athleta sale from $6, or keep scrolling to see which 11 deals caught my eye as the absolute best. This style is simple, timeless, and comfortable. It's primarily made with stretchy Tencel fabric that's breathable, easy to keep clean, and soft. With a subtle rib texture, you can wear this top on its own, or layer it under a vest or jacket to shake things up. Especially as it starts heating up outside, a mesh tank like this will be a great addition to your workout wardrobe. Plus, made with Athleta's Grid Knit mesh tech, the tank is just as durable as it is breathable. This lightweight, incredibly breathable linen tank is the perfect solution to hot summer days. It's soft to the touch and slightly sheer, giving it that ideal balance between comfort and style. Throw it on for a quick run, wear it out to dinner with friends, or lounge around home on a Sunday afternoon. Although we're quickly approaching blazing summer temperatures, having a high-quality sweatshirt on hand is still a good idea for freezing gyms, movie theaters, and even friend's homes. This classic quarter-zip sweatshirt is soft, made with a wrinkle-resistant fabric blend, and quickly wicks away sweat. Snagging a pair of Athleta leggings at this price? I'm so in. The only colorway that's discounted this much is this gorgeous juniper green, but there are multiple sizes left to choose from. Plus, you can shop other discounted colors on sale between $29 and $76. I can't believe these joggers haven't already sold out at nearly 75% off. I'm obsessed with the combination of a breathable, flowy pant legs and a two-toned, tight high-rise waistband. They're super soft as well, so you have the option of lounging around your home in them instead of heading to the gym. At 50% off, I'm impressed there are still so many sizes left for this breathable summer short. It's made with stretch-infused ripstop fabric that's both comfortable and durable on rough hikes and climbs, so you don't have to worry about snagging them on a rogue branch. Flowy shorts are great for summer, but in some situations, skintight legging shorts are preferable. For my yoga sessions and comfortably lounging around my home, I opt for buttery soft legging material that barely feels like it's there every time. Athleta makes fantastic sports bras, but they're quite pricey. Thankfully, this medium-support, quick-drying sports bra is 50% off right now. The bra has a built-in foam liner rather than removable pads, so washing and drying is a breeze. This particular sports bra is best for A-C cups, but the same sports bra is on sale for D-DD cups. Even though we're quickly moving into temperatures that tend to usher in shorts over leggings, you won't catch me at the gym without leggings. The coverage they offer, while also staying flexible for every imaginable exercise can't be beat. These particular leggings are made with Athleta's PowerMove fabric that provides daily durability and medium-to-high compression for improved blood flow. These are the ideal vacation short, with super lightweight, breezy fabric and subtle design details that make them easy to dress up or down. You could easily pair these with a nice cardigan to dinner or throw them over bikini bottoms as a casual cover-up.
